We have been merrily scrolling through all of your hashtags this month, plucking out those that burst with colour and vibrancy. We believe that ephemera plays a major role in collage and we wanted to search for those artists that have explored this concept and introduced aspects of texture, colour and other unique source materials into their work.

We hope you enjoy this weeks selection of Instamatic inspirations :

🏆 Congratulations to Jelle Van Den Heede, a winner of the CC Awards ‘Type Series' category 🏆

Jelle's typo series, titled ‘Words don't come easy’, in her own words "is an attempt to visualise the unspoken. That which is difficult to find words for. What is hidden or concealed but despite all attempts to repress it, still surfaces again. This can be about emotions or memories, traumas, etc. It's about the things you can read between the lines, if you look or listen carefully."

Congratulations to Jelle .vandenheede and everyone else who took part in the Annual Contemporary Collage Awards 2023 - We received a tremendous amount of incredible submissions this year and it is our pleasure to showcase the unique talents of the 2023

🏆 We're pleased to share the work of Greta Boesel, one of the winners of our 'Innovation' category.🏆

Greta's work caught our judges eye with her unique form of digital collage, created from photographs taken from a trip to Iceland in 2022/23, Greta Boesel has developed a fascinating and inventive collage style. Using musical notes that are linked with randomly assigned colours, shapes and images; Greta uses her own photographic imagery to create a visual maps of songs.

Here's what Greta had to say:

"The pieces shown here, representing three songs in the contemporary ambient/atmospheric genre, are digital collages created from photographs I took during that trip and a second visit in March 2023. In each piece, individual photographs were assigned to each musical note and arranged according to the melody of the song; the resulting composite images were then layered, resized, deconstructed and colorized to achieve the final design."

You can see the full Awards gallery on our website - link in bio.

Congratulations to Greta and everyone else who took part in the Annual Contemporary Collage Awards 2023 - We received a tremendous amount of incredible submissions this year and it is our pleasure to showcase the unique talents of the 2023 winners.

🏆 We're pleased to share the work of Romain Pouyau, one of the winners of our 'Portrait: Single Image' category.🏆

Romain's collage was made as a tribute to a French poem by Paul Éluard. Here's what Romain had to say:

"C’est à partir de toi que j’ai dit oui au monde » is a poem about love and my collage is also about passion. How love can drive us upside down and how art is a wonderful way of expressing it. The feelings (the bad and the good) are sometimes so intense that only art can reflect it. I love how love can make you feel the world in another way. And how the absence of love make you feel the opposite."

Congratulations to Romain .pouyau and everyone else who took part in the Annual Contemporary Collage Awards 2023 - We received a tremendous amount of incredible submissions this year and it is our pleasure to showcase the unique talents of the 2023 winners.

At the beginning of things there is always a spark. For Jamie and Rubén, it was the damaging effects of time over paper that inspired them. The faded colours, the paper folds, the tears, the dusty and stained imagery our eyes usually tend to disregard. They saw romance in the imperfections, despite the strong basement smell.

A 12 year journey is something to behold, in issue #29 we take a look at the extraordinary works of Jamie Tao & Rubén Salavert as they display the wonderful qualities of vintage paper. So far, they have handmade a total of 101 mixed media collages that are inspired by 101 different things.

🏆 Congratulations to Pascal Verzijl , the winner of the CC Awards ‘Portrait Series' category 🏆

Pascal’s unique weird and wonderful collage portraits and fresh approach to collage really stood out to our judges. Taking images from magazines that have no reference to his subject matter, Pascal manages to craft compelling works of art and create incredible characturful collages. Here’s what Pascal had to say:

“I search for the right elements using materials from books and magazines to form a composition that transcends the individual subjects depicted. By carefully bringing together these elements, I aim to create portraits that are cohesive, visually engaging, and emotionally resonant.”

You can see the full Awards gallery on our website - link in bio.

Sonia Boué is an Anglo-Spanish artist and writer based in Oxford, England. A background in art therapy and history of art informs her work, which encompasses both solo and participatory projects. Sonia turned to collage making during the pandemic to explore her neurodivergent identity, marking a conscious departure from previous work. She has recently self-published a book about her creative method called Neurophototherapy for neurodivergent people and anyone seeking to explore their true identity in new and creative ways with readily available collage materials.

🏆 Congratulations to Paul Henderson, a winner of the CC Awards 'Series' category 🏆

Paul’s series gave our judges a treat with his use of vibrant colours, textured layers and eclectic source materials. We loved Paul’s submissions to our CC Awards and are thrilled to have him as a double winner - Series / Commissions.

“I try to create visually dynamic works, held together by tensions between surface pattern, graphic elements, and pictorial illusion. My hope is to make work that is open, poetic, optically interesting, and asks questions.”

“Heroes & Leaders is a series hand-cut, analog, paper collages that use a variety of found imagery to explore relationships between art history, masculinity, and systems of power and capital. The collages combine art historical material, children’s books, illustrated encyclopedias, religious texts, and vintage print material, physically and psychically processing an unceasing repository of images, the news cycle, popular culture, and religion. This synthesis of disparate source material creates strange and lyrical images that are simultaneously critical, ambiguous, humorous, poetic, and visually dynamic.”

You can see the full Awards gallery on our website - link in bio.

Congratulations to Paul - and everyone else who took part in the Annual Contemporary Collage Awards 2023 - We received a tremendous amount of incredible submissions this year and it is our pleasure to showcase the unique talents of the 2023 winners.

If there’s one name that comes up time and time again when we ask artists about their influences, it’s Kurt Schwitters. Schwitters is a giant of 20th Century collage. His unique approach, utilising everyday found materials straddled Dadaism, Constructivism, Surrealism and graphic design. We asked you to tell us what Kurt Schwitters work meant to you.

You asked for it and now it’s almost here.

We’re delighted and excited to announce that the first printed issue of Contemporary Collage Magazine is on its way!

It’s designed, artworked and pretty much ready for the printers. But now we need your help.

Printing the magazine is a costly business and we have no idea how many to print. So, we’re asking you to pre-order. That will help us reduce the risk (we’re a very small company!) and help us be more accurate with the print run.

We’ll print a few extras, of course, but the only way to guarantee your copy is to pre-order.

The deadline for orders is Friday 8th December.

As a reward for pre-ordering, we have 50, yes FIFTY prizes to give away. Once you’ve pre-ordered you’ll be automatically entered into our prize draw, with prizes including original collages and lifetime membership to CC. magazine. Check our website for details.

Our first printed issue is packed to the rafters with full-on inspiration from some of the world’s leading collage artists.
