Today, we visit Barnard Castle; the castle, not the town, although sharing the same name - is one of the most historic castles in the north of England. It has been fought over, won and lost, by some of the most famous figures in English history. It has also been claimed by nobles, bishops, and kings. It was established around 1195 by a group of Premonstratensian canons, The monks, who were also all ordained priests, were known as White Canons because of their distinctive white attire. This week we visit Kirby Hall, one of England’s greatest Elizabethan and 17th-century houses, Built by Sir Humphrey Stafford but then passing ownership to Sir Christopher Hatton, who was the Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It was a large stone house that was built towards the end of the 16th century but modified in several different campaigns within the first hundred years of its history and then sadly abandoned in the early 19th century....

We carry on visiting in the area of Leicestershire and we take a wander around the remains of grace Dieu priory, which was a 12th century Augustinian nunnery that was sadly dissolved in 1538 by Henry VII. The eerie yet beautiful remains include earthworks that once suggested that there were fish ponds, a partially complete Undercroft and a place and feeling that is very well known for it’s resident ghosts that wander here still....

Today, we explore the hidden past to Kirby Muxloe, one of Leicestershire’s unfinished moated 15th century castles that was left as we wander it today when its owner was executed for treason. So join us as we take a wander and we explore these beautiful castle remains. It’s owner was William, Lord Hastings, who was the Lord Great Chamberlain of England, was granted a licence from Edward IV to fortify four manor houses in the area of Leicestershire, one of these was at his family seat in Kirby Muxloe which he began to build in 1480 on the site of a previous manor house that was built by the Pakeman family....

Back in the 12th century this town was busy and lively being by a busy port and it was second only to Ipswich as an important trading centre for Suffolk. The castle though is a striking medieval castle that was once used to emphasize it’s royal authority within the area, amazingly this keep is in fantastic condition following on some restoration works recently done, but although rather empty inside, it provides a great look into parts of medieval Britain and how people once lived....
