Police have issued CCTV images of two people they want to speak to in connection with a bank card fraud investigation.

A 79-year-old man put one of his cards into a cash machine in Gamston but it was swallowed.

A man then came over to him and said it had happened to him before. He advised the victim to put a second card in, enter his PIN number, and then both of his cards would be released.

The victim put his second card in and entered his PIN but nothing came up on the screen.

The man he was with then told him to press the cancel button but the button appeared to be stuck and wasn’t working. The man then pressed a button himself and left.

A second man then came over and told the victim to follow the same steps which he claimed would release his cards.

The victim put his card in and entered his PIN again but nothing happened. The man told him he should wait a few minutes and the card would be released.

The victim waited and decided to call his bank to explain what had happened. In the meantime, the second man had left.

Following the incident, which happened at around 5pm on Monday 6 November 2023, fraudulent withdrawals totalling hundreds of pounds were made from two of his accounts.

Police are continuing with their inquiries to trace and catch the two suspects and have now released CCTV images of two men they believe may have information which could aid them with their ongoing investigation.

PC Tom Griffith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are investigating this incident including the examination of CCTV footage in the area.

"We currently suspect a device was attached to this cash machine, forcing it to temporarily swallow the card while recording the inputted PIN.

“Once the victim left the area, the suspects were able to withdraw cash belonging to this vulnerable victim.

“Our advice is for people to scan the area around ATMs before they use them. Be aware of anyone standing close by and always check the machine to see if it’s been tampered with before you use it.

“Things to look out for are devices attached to the machine – some are more obvious than others. If you do see something suspicious please report it immediately to the bank and contact the police.

“Remember, if it doesn’t look or feel right then steer clear and, if possible, go inside the bank where it will be safer. And always keep a regular check on your transactions.”

Anyone who recognises either of the men pictured, or has any other information which could help officers with their investigation, should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 659 of 6 November 2023, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
