The announcement this week by the government that they will be constructing a commission, which will investigate racial inequality in the U.K., has been met with both support and criticism from either side of the political spectrum.

The Left have criticised the creator of the commission, Munira Mirza, for her past comments on institutional racism, and her accusation that anti-racists are locked in a “grievance culture”.

More conservative commentators, in contrast, have supported Mirza, arguing that she will not shy away from politically sensitive territory.

This will be the seventh inquiry into racial inequality since 1999, which forces me to beg the question:

The French post-modern philosopher, Jacques Derrida is most famous for his method of Deconstruction, which he used to expose the fundamental contradiction of Logocentrism; the superiority of speech over the written word. However, there surely is a third element to this relationship: that of individual THOUGHT.

Contemplating over speech, writing, AND thought; the relationship between the three, and if they can be stratified in a hierarchy of value, provokes extremely interesting conclusions.

The far-right, counter-BLM protests that occurred over the weekend resulted in over 100 arrests, as far-right protestors attacked police officers and innocent bystanders.

This violence should be treated no differently from the outbreaks of violence that have occurred on the BLM demonstrations.

The difference between the two however is between BLM protesting for a distinctive cause, and the far-right counter-protestors demonstrating for no cause whatsoever, apart from the feeble notion of ‘violence for violence sake’.

Amongst all this chaos however, one act of pure compassion stood out in stark contrast to the reckless pseudo-Fascism that ensued in parts of London on Saturday.

Sadiq Khan’s announcement to review London’s memorial statues asks a larger question about Britain’s Imperial past.

Largely through a lack of education, many people are unaware of the extent of Britain’s colonial control over a third of the world.

The question I ask is that if we replace the existing statues in Britain, would that open up a larger, perhaps more heated discussion about which historical figures should replace them?

Whilst I support Sadiq Khan’s review, we must be mindful of the potential problems it could create. After all, there are only so many plinths for statues to be placed on, and there are endless group identities that wish for their heroes to be immortalised.

A million people is a huge message to the government that they are not happy with the way things are. If the public want Cummings to go, then they should have their collective voices heard and action should be taken.
