Last month a few of the Blackboys squad attended the Sussex cricket league awards night where they collected their team and individual awards. A great night where we collected our division 10 winners shield. Our skipper H.Funnell collected the most runs in the division shield and C.Eade collected his shield for most wickets in the division. All presented by former England cricketer Mark Ramprakash.

INVINCIBLE BLACKBOYS!

on a wet Saturday afternoon, the Blackboys team travelled to our friends at Wadhurst. With a very green and damp to say the least pitch the Blackboys skipper won the toss and unsurprisingly opted to bowl first. Up stepped C.Turner to start the damage taking 3 wickets in his first 2 overs leaving wadhurst 8-3. However, Wadhurst re-grouped and began to push on and start edging towards a big total. This brought back the partnership of C.Turner and J.Britton to try and reduce that. With the latter picking up 2 wickets and C.Turner completing his 5fer! This restricted Wadhurst to 208-8 off their 40.

The Blackboys innings followed a similar pattern with them losing 2 early wickets and finding themselves 13-2. With a lot of doubt now among the away side, skipper H.Funnell began to steady the ship and give some hope. At drinks it was 83-2 but still a long way to go. At 155-2 H.Funnell brought up his ton and with R.Coates supporting firmly, moment began to swing towards Blackboys. At 201-3 the Blackboys skipper was dismissed for a well made 128, that left it to R.Coates on 51* and D.Griffiths to knock off the winning runs with an over to spare.

Sadly this is our last fixture of the campaign! However the boys will look to make one more milestone in their incredible season as a win today means they’ve completed an invincible season. Let’s hope the weather holds and we get some cricket in!

Blackboys ease past Crowhurst park.

On what was one of the only dry wickets we’ve played on this year the Blackboys skipper won the toss and as ever opted to bowl first. It started well with J.Britton removing there skipper at 25/1 however. From then on it was to be a very frustrating afternoon with the ball just not falling to hand. Crowhurst park built themselves a platform at 126/3 until S.Telford found his rythm which made light work of the batting order. Claiming 6 wickets and the Away side now at 155/9 before eventually ending on 159/9.

In reply the Blackboys openers knew anything wide of the stumps was a run scoring ball on this pitch. That was exactly the case with the ball finding the rope frequently as H.Funnell and N.Rogers both reaching half centuries and cruising to victory. The latter was removed at 150/1 but that didn’t stop them reaching the line with 14 overs to go.

🚨BLACKBOYS ARE CHAMPIONS🚨

After an incredible season Blackboys have claimed the trophy for Division 10East! 14 wins from 14 games played. They have 1 game left to make it an invincible season! This would also mean they will have won the league by 101pts!

Throwback to our presidents day a few weeks ago. It was a great game where the Blackboys team set the presidents XI 208 to win and they calmly chalked it off in the 37th over. A very enjoyable game indeed!
It wasn’t just the cricket that was enjoyable with putting on a spectacular bbq. A lovely selection of cakes, scones and drinks was also provided with great thanks to our President. This was followed up by a raffle draw at the end!

Blackboys become league champions!

The Blackboys team made the trek over to Pett knowing a win would secure the league title. The home side won the toss and surprisingly chose to bat. G.Funnell wasted no time in removing one of the openers but that didn’t affect the home side with them scoring steadily. T.Telford joined in on the action removing the other opener and 42-2 quickly became 60-5 once C.Eade began his spell! However, Pett regrouped and dug themselves out of a hole this led them to double their score before the next wicket fell. From here on wickets came steadily aswell as runs and the total amassed to 168-9.

In reply Blackboys got off to a flyer at 81 off the first 10 overs before N.Rogers was dismissed for 44. That didn’t slow the run rate though with H.Funnell bringing up his 50 not long after. The runs never seemed to dry up even though wickets began to fall frequently and at 4 down it was the Blackboys skipper who saw them over the line with 15 overs to go.

Blackboys secure promotion!

On what was a surprising decision, the Pevensey skipper won the toss and opted to bat. After a steady start it was the pace of C.Turner that made the breakthrough. With the first wicket gone at 24-1 that started a batting collapse in the hands of J.Britton who took 5/17. This resulted in Pevensey finding themselves 76-7. With an uphill battle from here the away side never really rallied together and it was left to C.Eade and S.Telford to clean up the tail with Pevensey totalling 102 all out.

In reply Blackboys lost an opener early and Pevensey now with their tails up were creating pressure. C.Albright came in and as ever scored runs quickly to eat into the oppositions total and soon removed that pressure. But he was later dismissed for a quick fire 21. D.Griffiths was next to join H.Funnell at the crease and the pair punished the loose ball and it wasn’t long before they knocked off the total after 21 overs.

Blackboys do the double over linden park!

On an overcast day Blackboys won the toss and stuck the opposition in. The ever reliant C.Turner was turning the batsmen inside out and did everything in his 9 overs except take a wicket! This helped restrict the home side to 64-0 off 20. With Linden park looking to push on, a wicket was inevitable and this came through a stunning 1 handed catch from D.Griffiths behind the stumps. All the Blackboys bowlers played their part, but it was leading wicket taker C.Eade who was the standout taking 39-5 which restricted the home side to 145/9 off their 40.

In reply Blackboys lost S.Telford in the first over but that didn’t slow the run rate with anything short C.Albright was sending to the rope. At drinks Blackboys were 100-1 but a little after C.Albright was dismissed for a well made 64. That left H.Funnell and R.Coates to finish the job and get Blackboys get the line with 14 overs remaining.
