The fabulous Welland Valley Viaduct at Harringworth Northants

08/03/2020

The Railway Viaduct at Harringworth is an iconic part of the Welland Valley Landscape. Situated between Corby and Oakham, it towers over what must have been a spectacular river that still starts its life in the Wash but is now little more than a stream when it reaches Northamptonshire. The Railway Touring company organise many steam train excursions throughout the UK and internationally and this video shows their "Yorkshireman" trip from Ealing Broadway to York, hauled by A4 Pacific locomotive Union of South Africa. Even this marvellous sister to the famous world record holding "Mallard" seems to struggle up the last section of the viaduct before it entererd the tunnel at Manton.

Wild Bill is an ITV drama/comedy series about an American Cop, Bill Hixon (played by actor Rob Lowe), who finds himself shipped off to the UK origins of the Pilgrim Fathers, the port of Boston in Lincolnshire, to take up the post of Chief Constable. We learn from the first episode that Boston has the highest murder rate in the UK, has a high immigrant population from Eastern Europe and that Wild Bill has arrived with his teenage daughter Kelsey to start a new life after punching someone in the USA.

Wild Bill’s Territory is an interactive immersive tour that explores just a few of the Boston locations used in the drama series with some information about where and what they are in real life and how they were used in the TV series.

Boston is the town where I was born and where plan to have my ashes scattered after I die so the TV series is of great personal interest to me, not just because it is where I originated a grew up, but also because of the impact of location-based TV series on the culture heritage and tourism on the places where they were filmed. Series such as Heartbeat, Morse, Lewis, Morse and Endeavour have generated a lot of interest in their filming locations in Goathland and Oxford. This in turn stimulates tourism and generates economic benefits for the local community.

In Wild Bill, Boston is portrayed from the perspective of the criminals and the local police force. Whilst there is a great deal of humour in the characters, it would be easy to assume that Boston was a crime-ridden town with serious endemic immigration problems.

This interactive tour not only shows some of the locations used in Wild Bill such as the Sessions House, Boston Stump, Dolphin Lane, the Market Place, the Gliderdrome, Boston Docks and the White Hart Hotel, but also celebrates the rich cultural history of the town of Boston and its links to the Pilgrim Fathers who first tried to sail from a creek just outside Boston before being imprisoned in the town and later making their way to Plymouth for their iconic journey to the USA. Many towns in the region around Boston Massachusetts were named after English towns and villages.

Boston Stump is the famous name of the parish church of St Botolphs. Its tall tower acted as a beacon for ships in the Wash off the East Coast of England. Boston Stump has a beautiful interior and thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery, it has been extensively restored. The interior and exterior shots of the Stump and the aerial video in the interactive tour give an idea of the scope of the restoration work.

Across from Customs House Quay stands the historic Shodfriars Hall which not only acted as a monastery in ancient times but later became one of the birthplaces of the flourishing Music Hall and was where the famous “Old Mother Riley” character made a stage debut before leaving for the USA with his “Kitty McShane” daughter to become a star of old black and white movies.

Further down the road is the historic Boston Grammar School where there is an ancient “Beast Mart” holiday celebrated every year in the school playground. In this interactive tour you can meet Boston Grammar old boy, Chris Blakey who visited his old school at the beginning of an epic journey across Siberia in his 1937 Austin Seven. The video clip includes a sample of the Celebrate the Seven Movie Trailer.

The tour also allows you to fly over to Fenside Road, Woodville Road and the nearby village of Wyberton to get a glimpse of an aerial video shot over the local Parish Church.

This video trailer can only scratch the surface of the rich experiences to be enjoyed in my home town of Boston and I hope that after exploring the interactive virtual tour, you will take the time to visit the town in person to discover that Boston has much more to offer.
