Would you like to help the homeless this Christmas? The majority of our clients at Open Door are sleeping on the streets, so every year we create a rucksack full of wrapped up goodies for them to enjoy over the Christmas period.
Take a look at our poster below and possibly create a donation box at your work, school, hobby or community centre? We’d love to add some extra Christmas cheer to our clients during December. 🎁
Thank you so much! 🎄

Somerset FA is delighted to announce the launch of the Individual Access Fund. With this fund, we would like to help to remove barriers to playing football. We recognise that finance is one of those, a situation made worse by the current financial position. Our fund is open to individuals who are at risk of not being able to participate in football as a result of significant financial hardship. If you as an individual (or the individual you care for) are unable to afford the essential costs of playing football, this fund is here to help you play the game.

What can we fund?

Strand A: Equipment for you or the individual you care for (e.g., boots, shin pads, goalie gloves, specialised glasses, any other individual specialised equipment)

Strand B: Running costs for you or the individual you care for (e.g. training and match fees, transport)

The fund is a maximum of £100 per individual and for more information please contact [email protected] OR to apply for the fund, please do so via this application form: https://forms.gle/PZptx4typFRVqv397

Talking to Jace Linnell of St Giles Animal Centre St Giles Animal Rescue made me realise how circumstances in wider society impact on their work. COVID, celebrity lifestyles and the cost of living crisis have all affected the need for animal rescue, pet food banks and good honest advice for current and prospective pet owners. We also eat a few sweet things along the way of course... 🍰🧁

Compassion and kindness are traits my guest this week has by the bucketload. Emma Busby is a manager at Taunton Open Door homeless centre and so our chat this week is about the homeless community in Emma's home town of Taunton in Somerset. What causes young men, in particular to become homeless? And why is simply providing a roof over someones head not enough to stop them returning to the streets?

Enjoying a slice of something nice whilst we chat is part of my podcast ethos and this week I enjoyed a bakewell slice from Taunton Country Market whilst my guest Emma Busby of Taunton Open Door was hugely impressed by a lemon drizzle baked by students at Bridgwater & Taunton College where one of the volunteer chefs in the homeless centre kitchen teaches youngster's to cook and bake. 🍰🧁

My guest is Emma Busby of Taunton Open Door who support the town's homeless community back into permanent housing by providing a safe space for food, showers and laundry as well as access to other agencies that can help issues such as addiction and abuse that often lead to homelessness and can make the transition to a new home challenging for some of the centre's clients. 🏠

I had a fascinating and hilarious chat with Kate Olver Taunton Village Midwife for this weeks The Slice. Passionate about helping women have the pregnancy experience they want, Kate works for both the NHS and operates as a 'village midwife' providing pre and ante natel classes to women in and around Taunton. She loves to bake and eat cake too, so we hit it off straight away...although you will have to listen to find out what slice of something nice Kate intended to bring to the conversation! 👶🍰

I had twins so you would expect them to be smaller than the average baby... they weighed in at birth around 6lb each! I was barely 3lb when I was delivered back in the mid-1960s, very small and in neo-natel for a while, But we all grew and now look quite normal (honest!). Baby weight is a big concern for many, but as my guest this week, Kate Olver Taunton Village Midwife explains, it's pretty hard to estimate in advance! We chat pregnancy, birth, early days as a mother and, of course, cake. We have a good old laugh too! 👶🍰🎤🤣

Knitted hats on new born babies... so cute but do you know why they are used? My twins had one each, but I never really thought about why... Listen to my conversation with the amazing Kate Olver Village Midwife to get the inside track on life as a midwife both for the NHS and as an indpendent provider of pre and post natel advice and classes. Oh yes, and Kate likes to bake too. Fabulous! 🍰👶🤣🎤

Olver... an interesting name for a midwife right?! 🤣🤣 Kate sees the funny side of course and uses the obvious pun to both educate and ensure her colleagues and clients don't mis-pronouce her surname! Listen as I chat pregnancy and cake with Kate Olver, Taunton Village Midwife. 🎤🍰👶

Talking to Coleen and Di from Somerset Council's 'stepping stone' fostering service was hugely inspiring. The work these two ladies do is vital for young people who are leaving care services and foster homes at 18 years old, but still need a caring family to help them navigate the challenges of early adulthood. Of course, cake sustains Coleen and Di as they work to find foster families and support both them and the young person to ensure the experience is a genuine 'steppping stone' to the next phase of life. 🍰

🎧 Listen as we chat about the valuable work they do and, of course, share a slice of cake. Visit https://theslicesomerset.buzzsprout.com or find The Slice Somerset on your fave podcast player.

Transitioning to independent adulthood is a challenge for the majority of teenagers in one way or another. But if you haven't had a loving and supportive family from the get go, it can be harder to navigate that journey. Coleen and Di work with young people leaving the care system at 18 but who still need the advice and support of a family to help them make their way. They support the families who act as that 'stepping stone' to adulthood and have witnessed both the challenges and the rewards they experience.

Listen as we chat about the work they do over a French Fancy and homemade sultant tray bake; find The Slice on or your fave podcast player or click https://theslicesomerset.buzzsprout.com to listen now. 🎧🍰😁

I've not had these for ages! They are super pretty and super sweet but I still manage to eat half a box (=4) before, during and after my interview with Coleen and Di from 'Stepping Stones' service.

These ladies are dedicated to finding foster homes for young adults 18+ who need a caring family to help them make those first steps towards a safe and secure independent life.

My guests this episode are Coleen and
Di from fostering service, 'Stepping Stones'. They work as a team, supported by Coleen's trusty Sultana tray bake, to find placements for care leavers turning 18 years old.

Listen and find out about their work and why is it so important to ensure young people from less than perfect backgrounds can find their feet in the adult world.
