My guests this episode are Coleen and
Di from @somersetcouncil fostering service, 'Stepping Stones'. They work as a team, supported by Coleen's trusty Sultana tray bake, to find placements for care leavers turning 18 years old.
Listen and find out about their work and why is it so important to ensure young people from less than perfect backgrounds can find their feet in the adult world.

Navigating early adulthood is tricky for all
young people, but if you are coming out of the care system aged 18, it can be overwhelming. That is where Di and Coleen of the Somerset Council Stepping Stones service step in. They find and support families willing to foster a young adult and help them gain the skills needed to move to being fully independent.
These women deserve your ears! It's important we all understand the challenges faced by the young people in our county, and this pair might even inspire you to become a foster carer yourself. Coleen would probably make you her cake if you did! 🤣🤣 🍰

Mindfulness is applauded and criticised in equal measure nowadays, but my guest Teresa Wort - Mindfulness and Compassion Teacher explains that it is more than just sitting outside and relaxing (although it is that too...). She became interested, and then trained as a mindfulness teacher, after a series of unfortunate accidents...listen to hear her story and how she has now grown a following on local radio station Apple FM with her Monday evening show.

Fascinating chat with Graham Harvey; Board member for Somerset Food Trail, journalist, author of several books and longstanding writer and agricultural story editor for BBC Radio 4 4 The Archers. He was always going to be an interesting guest with that kind of CV! And he bakes his own cake! 🍰
🎧Listen now at https://theslicesomerset.buzzsprout.com or find it on @spotify or another player. You won't regret it.😁
Guest Graham Harvey is passionate about organic farming...so much so that he refuses cake unless it is made with organic ingredients. That shows a deep committment to a way of farming and producing food that he believes is fundemental to improving health and diverting the impacts of climate change. His involvement with Somerset Food Trail festival is based on a wish to bring people and the good quality organic food available in the county together.
Oh yes, and Graham was also script writer and Agricultural Story Editor for BBC Radio 4 The Archers for decades! So we chat Elizabeth and Nigel Pargetter, Lynda Snell and Rob Titchener too! What's not to like? 😀

The quality of our food and the farming methods used to produce it have been on my guest's radar for many years. Graham Harvey has written for The Guardian and other newspapers, magazine and journals and spent 34 years writing scripts for BBC Radio 4 The Archers and, as their Agricultural Story Editor, ensured farming was at the forefront of the tales that unfolded in this long-running rural drama. He is now involved with Somerset Food Trail whose festival begins on 14th July as a way to bring Somerset people in closer contact with those that are pioneering organice and regenerative farming and food production methods across the county.
