So I've seen a few posts here and there from different grounds...statements such as
'It's disgusting how I saw a funfair worker smoke in the paybox or on the waltzer' 😧
'i went to go on a ride, all the lights were on but no one was there..shocking'😧
'their meant to be professional and all they seem to do is joke and laugh around'😧
'the price on the rides are disgusting, it's robbing people for a 3 minute ride'😧
'the ride attendant looked like he really didn't want to be there'😧
My opinion is as follows and you don't have to agree with it but this is my take...
I've worked alongside showmen for many years now and know Exactly what's involved and what it takes to work at a funfair so I've got a pretty good understanding!
Picture this 👇👇👇👇
You wake up in the morning, grab a coffee, get ready and get dressed to work at the fair.
Turn up at 10 or 11am to do safety checks, walk around the ride looking for any issues, test run for half an hour, carry out any work that is needed hopefully grab a coffee before you open.
The fair opens so you sit in the paybox waiting for your first riders of the day...get out of the paybox to load and unload them..
Stand around the ride for another few hours loading and offloading people constantly...
Oh wait you need the toilet!!! Unfortunately people don't realise this and just think the operator can't be bothered to open it so they complain when you shoot off for 5 minutes to the toilet...
If your a smoker god forbid you walk off for a quick ciggie just in case a queue builds up
By this time you've been working for around 4 to 5 hours already and haven't had food yet!!!
You see a mate so you have a quick chat and a giggle...your not allowed to show anyone though as it's unprofessional...
Back on the ride but don't worry only another 5 hours to go!
Up and down all day loading and offloading people constantly, taking complaints about how much the ride is...screaming kids, the sight of people going home with their kids whilst yours are at home board because you have to work..
Your legs are killing being on your feet all day and by this time it's 6 or 7pm and it's gone quiet....I could grab some food now for my dinner but there's only 2 hours left so I'll wait till I get home....
Closing time approaches so you close up...do your checks, switch off and lock up...by this time it's 10pm in th evening and you've been on your feet for 12 hours straight, you haven't had food yet!! You've sneaked 2 ciggies all day and you've managed to go to the toilet quickly twice!!
Off to bed at 11pm ready to do it all over again tomorrow
But don't worry the fairs gone in 2 weeks..
That's 10 hours for 14 days....every day...
Remind me again why you complain??
This is why I believe showmen and operators are some of the most hard working people out there!!
