I am the third generation of a showbiz family; my grandfather William was in ‘Fred Karno’s Army’ and understudied Charlie Chaplin in the UK and the USA, grandma Ethel became part of it too. Later William became a trick cyclist then formed The Willenors who appeared in the 1933 Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium in front of King George V.

Using a recording I made, this is an interview I did with my grandmother, Ethel Gwendoline H***e, in Tampa Florida in 1981 and will be broadcast and streamed as a 60 minute show on Sunday 11 February at 11am GMT.

Thanks to all for your kind comments and support over the last 5 years.

For some losing a radio station can be like losing a friend.

For those living an isolated life, a local community radio proves its strength as a valuable source of information, reassurance, and fun. As one of the most trusted and accessible forms of media, it is perhaps no surprise that so many are tuning in.
The latest RAJAR stats show that 48.1 million adults tune in to the radio each week, and people are listening for longer now that more are at home.

Following the report in October last year, Purbeck Coast FM has been struggling due to a lack of funding and practical pressures. Despite everyone’s best efforts sadly the station is no longer viable. It is therefore with great regret that The Swanage Pier Trust has taken the decision to close Purbeck Coast FM on Thursday 15th February 2024 at 5.00pm.

We would like to thank all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work and to the listeners, local businesses and organisations for their support over the years.

How it All Began

Swanage Pier Trust began developing the concept of a Swanage Pier Community Radio Station in 2014. At the time, plans were underway for renovating the Pier and regenerating the site to provide the historic structure with a sustainable future.

In order to achieve sustainability in the long term, one of the key components is gaining greater involvement and support from the community. Part of this involves identifying a range of different activities which encourage people of all ages to take part.

Due to the enthusiasm and interest generated from research and community engagement, a project was launched to build a radio station. Independent funding was identified which was not connected to the Pier renovation programme.

The aim is to launch a full time Community Radio Station from the buildings at Swanage Pier, streaming online and eventually progressing to an FM frequency. The station will be predominantly run by volunteers from the local area. It will broadcast a blend of interesting chat, promoting local news, stories and events, and will carry a mix of music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today.
