It’s official… Sunderland is a music city! 🎶✨
Sunderland Music City has announced that its bid to join the Music Cities Network has been successful, with Sunderland now a fully fledged member of the global collective.

The accreditation will make Sunderland the second city in the UK to join the network, after Manchester. Sunderland will be joining major cities like Bergen, Berlin, Brussels, Gothenburg, Reykjavik, Sydney and Valencia to name but a few. 🌍🎸

Membership of the network is testimony to the talent, hard work and achievement of everyone working in Sunderland’s music sector. And a signal of more great things to come.

Massive boost for our city and UK motor industry as £50 million investment deal secured between Japan Automatic Transmission Company (JATCO), Nissan and the UK government secured to build a new manufacturing site in Sunderland. 🚙👷🧱

The site will be JATCO’s first UK and European plant and is set to create and support hundreds of jobs in the North East.

The new site will help create 183 new high-value jobs in the region and support over 400 in the wider supply chain. It will also produce 3-in-1 electric vehicle powertrains for Nissan’s neighbouring Sunderland plant.

Nissan is one of the largest UK-based vehicle manufacturers, employing around 6000 people across its Sunderland facilities, and today’s announcement builds on their £2 billion investment in the region in 2023 to build electric vehicles.

Sunderland Council have approved plans for new neighbourhood: “Farringdon Row” will form part of 1,000-home Sunderland Riverside regeneration masterplan.

Farringdon Row will be built on a 4.6-acre brownfield site, with work expected to start by June 2025.

The new homes will include 67 two to three-bedroom houses and 98 one to two-bedroom apartments.

Residents will have access to private and communal gardens, as well as the nearby River Wear and Riverside Park.

The new development is the second of four new neighbourhoods in the council’s wider Riverside Sunderland masterplan, which aims to build 1,000 new homes and one million sq ft of office space in the former industrial heart of the city.

Work to begin on city’s new Riverside Park 🌳

An ambitious project to transform swathes of land spanning both sides of the River Wear into a new city centre park is set to get underway.

Esh Construction has been appointed by Sunderland City Council to lead on the first phase of Riverside Park, situated at the heart of Riverside Sunderland.

One of the UK’s largest urban regeneration projects, Riverside Sunderland is a multi-billion-pound project breathing new life into the city’s former industrial heartland.

Covering 13.7 hectares of parkland and 5.3 hectares of river, Riverside Park, which comprises Galley’s Gill, Kingsley Gardens, Lambton Riverside and Wearmouth Riverside, will be delivered in several phases as the wider regeneration progresses.

Phase one will include the creation of the new park entrance, which will be situated at the southern end of Galley’s Gill, between the Riverside multi-storey car park and the new Eye Hospital. The area includes new ponds and landscaping that will provide attractive and interactive social spaces and a variety of flora and fauna that will increase biodiversity and natural habitat.

A ‘topping out’ ceremony marks one year on since building work started on the region’s new Eye Hospital at Riverside Sunderland.

All three partners gathered on the top of the new build yesterday, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is working in partnership with Sunderland City Council and construction partner Kier to deliver the project.

Once complete in spring 2026, the new Eye Hospital will continue Sunderland’s proud legacy of providing specialist eye care for people across the and beyond.

Work will now press on to add the roof to the building, while work has already started to add the panels to the side of the structure. Construction is also ongoing on the energy centre linked to the main hospital.

The Eye Hospital is a significant new development at Riverside Sunderland delivering a programme of change that will bring 10,000 new jobs and 2,500 new residents to the city centre, as well as attracting world-class leisure destinations, creating exciting new places for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Sunderland's multi-award-winning riverside car park has been recognised for its design excellence at the UK's most prestigious architecture awards, held in London this week.

Riverside Sunderland Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP), at Farringdon Row, scooped its latest gong at the AJ Awards, which showcase the best architecture projects across the country each year. The 657 space Riverside Multi Storey Car Park was honoured as Infrastructure and Transport Project of the Year at the glittering event, which attracts leading lights from built environment.

Esh to lead next phase of Riverside Sunderland’s regeneration.

Work on the next phase of one of the UK’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects is set to get underway, after a contractor was appointed to deliver the scheme.

Esh Construction has been appointed as the lead contractor to oversee a multi-million-pound package of infrastructure improvements to advance the next phase of the Riverside Sunderland development.

The project will deliver high quality public realm, improved footpath and cycle connections, and critical infrastructure that will enable further development of the Sheepfolds area surrounding the Stadium of Light and new leisure hub, Sheepfolds Stables, which opened its doors earlier this year.

The works will see a small pedestrian footbridge constructed between the Stadium of Light and Sheepfolds Stables , over the historic cobbled path which leads down to the River Wear, completing the connection between the new and existing communities to the north of the river with Keel Square and the city centre.

Sunderland leaders welcome multi-million-pound city boost.

A huge funding package that will help unlock more than 1,000 new riverside homes in Sunderland has been welcomed by civic leaders as "a vitally important step forward in the city's transformation".

More than £41m of external grant funding has been secured by Sunderland City Council from Homes England; the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG); and the North East Combined Authority (NECA). At a Cabinet Meeting held today [November 14], the city's portfolio holders said the support would unlock Riverside Sunderland 's next phase of development, which will see more than 1,000 new homes - that will attract some 2,500 new residents - built over the coming years.

Sunderland’s Crown Works Studio site was mentioned in the Chancellor’s budget today with confirmation the government will be providing £25 million for the North East Combined Authority, which will be used to remediate the project, creating 8,000 new jobs. 🎬✨
