STUART SMITH AND THE DODO

There has been a fascinating discussion on FB recently regarding the greatest driver/car combination of all time.

Personally, I believe it was Stuart Smith and the 'Dodo', a combination I commemorated with a limited edition print to celebrate the 70th anniversary of our great sport.

Many have asked why it was called the Dodo - Andy Smith says his dad called it that because it had wings, but couldn't fly. But fly it did!

Ironically, Stuart never won a World Final in the car, in fact he only made the race once during that time – in 1978 when he didn't finish – but it was his most successful stock car as far as race victories are concerned.

Of the 500 finals he won during his career, 148 of them came in the Dodo between 1976 and 1978. And remarkably in 1977 he scored four maximums in a row – at Nelson on Saturday, May 21, at Aycliffe the following day, then Bradford on Thursday, May 26 and White City on Saturday, May 28. He only failed to make it five in a row the day after at Hartlepool with a win in the consolation rather than his heat.

Our sport has had plenty of memorable moments during its 70-year history – and witnessing this driver in this car was one of its ultimate highlights. Iconic.

IT'S FINISHED!

We're pleased to reveal the latest in the series of BriSCA F1 70th anniversary drawings – it is now complete!

Frankie Wainman Jnr winning the 2017 British Championship at Sheffield.

Some of the action from Aldershot this afternoon. What an excellent little venue it is. Big crowd, great weather, and plenty of good racing from all three formulas. Spectators can get close to the action, and the drivers enjoyed it - it is more of a challenge than most, with turns 3 and 4 significantly tighter than 1 and 2, plus an opposite camber to negotiate.

The meeting was well run with great commentary and the 12 races were turned round in under four hours. Top marks!

Aldershot on Sunday has the potential to be a brilliant afternoon of stock car racing – the weather looks like being good too.

While I only live about 45 minutes away from the track this will be my first visit! Really looking forward to seeing F1s on a new track.

As always, I will be bringing prints and books along with me on the day, and with Father's Day just over two weeks away I will be offering a special deal for a limited period. More of that later!

Another BriSCA F1 70th anniversary drawing is on the go at the moment. While the original is large, the print for this one will be a smaller size than the John Lund and Stuart Smith prints (around A3 size), as not everyone has the luxury of space on walls for big frames. It's a size that will work on a wall or on a desk.

Just a quick message to say I will be at King's Lynn on Saturday with Stuart Smith and John Lund limited edition prints in tow.

There are a few well-known personalised numbered prints still available, so if there is one number out of the 200 (a driver or simply your favourite number) you are after – and it's available – I can bring it with me.

If you have already bought a print do come and say hello anyway, as it is always nice to place faces to names!

Many thanks to everyone who has ordered the Stuart Smith limited edition print – I’m delighted to be able to say that all orders so far taken have now been despatched!

Some have taken longer than they should to be sent, and I can only apologise for the delay, but hopefully everyone (in the UK at least) will receive their print before the Easter break.

There are still copies left and also personalised numbers that have yet to be taken, including four World Champions, six who won the British and European titles, as well as a number of other popular drivers through the ages.

This drawing was actually started a couple of weeks ago, so I can show the progress made so far over a couple of posts. I've combined images to create it. It's been an enjoyable way to spend an evening or two (or ten!), though it has been more of a challenge to draw than I thought it would be.

I start from the centre – the focal point – and work outwards. Never used to do this back in the day – I used to draw the background first, but have found this works much better. Certainly did with the John Lund drawing.

From there, the pencil work is built up gradually in layers until it looks right.

JOHN LUND LIMITED EDITION PRINT UPDATE

It appears the National Theatre takes priority over John Lund!

We planned to have the prints ready to go this week, however, our printers have a large job for the National Theatre they need to clear – so we have been bumped down the order.

It may be a royal theatre, but they clearly didn't get the memo about King John!

With the paper ordered and the printing plates ready to be inked it should be all systems go to run the machines next week.

We have been advised to allow two full days for the ink to dry – due to the specific finish we want – before we can take delivery and forward them on to you.
