RAF Coningsby played an integral part in the Allied strategic bombing campaign of the Second World War, and paid a heavy price for it. Operations between March 1941 and May 1945 cost the lives of 1,096 Coningsby airmen, whose average age was twenty-one. Inadequate aircraft and difficulties in target identification plagued operations in the early years, culminating in 617 Squadron’s disastrous attack on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in September 1943. The subsequent introduction of a Pathfinder Force within No. 5 Group defined all operations from D-Day onwards, and raids continued out of Coningsby right up to the armistice.

Numerous books have been written on airships, but few concentrate on their bases and infrastructure to support their operations. "BRITISH AIRSHIP BASES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY" starts with documenting the primitive facilities from which the early machines flew in the years prior to the First World War. The outbreak of the First World War resulted in airships being adopted for military purposes and bases were established across Britain. Most of these were operated by the Royal Naval Air Service for the protection of shipping against U-boats.

In the 1920s, an attempt was made by the British Government to build airships for commercial transport. The locations where these giants of the sky were constructed are described as well as the proposed overseas passenger terminals. The latter part of this enthralling and detailed book chronicles the attempt to establish the airship as a means of transport to link together the far flung lands of the British Empire.

Reference is also made at attempts to revive the airship in the closing decade of the 20th century and the locations associated with them.

The end of the First World War brought with it the closure of many Scottish military aerodromes; however, it retained links with naval aviation and aircraft carriers.

In the latter part of the 1920s, Auxiliary Air Force squadrons were formed at Edinburgh and Glasgow, which were manned by civilians. With the rise of the Third Reich in Germany, the RAF responded by building new airfields or reopening former First World War sites.

These included armament practice camps at Evanton and West Freugh where pilots could perfect skills in bombing and weapon firing. RAF flying boats also visited various coastal locations around Scotland in the years leading up to the war.

The atom bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the Second World War opened the door to the nuclear age.
Seeing the potential for developing nuclear energy for the US Navy, Captain Hyman Rickover initiated a research programme that culminated in the launch of USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. Meanwhile, ballistic missile technology was developing fast, but still relied on complex liquid fuels.

The US Navy partnered with the army to develop a ballistic missile for both services, but withdrew when solid fuels became a practical proposition. Under the leadership of RADM William Raborn, the US Navy set up its own project: the Polaris weapon system.

In 1960, the first missile-armed nuclear-powered submarine (SSBN) left on patrol, with forty more to follow. Two years later, when Britain’s Blue Streak and Skybolt plans were cancelled, Harold Macmillan and John F. Kennedy agreed for Polaris to be supplied to the Royal Navy.

Jack Hawkins was the living embodiment of British ruggedness, resilience, humour, uprightness and compassion on and off the screen. As president of the International Badminton Federation, Reedie was responsible for elevating Badminton to an Olympic sport in 1985.

Shortly after the end of the Second World War, the United Kingdom was described as one vast aircraft carrier anchored off the coast of Europe. During a seven-year period, 500 airfields were constructed to serve the needs first of the RAF and later the USAAF as they carried the war to German-occupied Europe.

The airfields that were constructed took many different forms, from training airfields and advanced landing grounds to grass fighter airstrips and vast complexes used to accommodate heavy bombers.

"RAF AND USAAF AIRFIELDS IN THE UK" charts the history of each Second World War airfield in and around the UK, providing a unique insight into the construction, operational life, and post-war history of each airfield. Alongside detailing the history of each airfield, this work comprehensively records the details of each unit that operated from airfields around the UK. The story of former photo-reconnaissance pilot James Elwyn Storey and his epic flight across the Atlantic in a Spitfire PR XI.
On the morning of 24 December 1943, No. 542 Squadron’s intelligence officer briefed photographic-reconnaissance pilot James Elwyn Storey on covering ‘crossbow’ sites in the Calais-Abbeville area. He was airborne at 11 a.m. and set course in Spitfire PR XI for the French coast, passing over London at 15,000 feet.

The weather was perfect over the English Channel and Storey flew to Dunkirk and set course for Abbeville. Fifty miles before reaching the objective, he was targeted by an accurate German anti-aircraft battery, and he occasionally rolled the Spitfire on her side to check beneath him.

To conserve fuel, he began a gradual climb up to 40,000 feet. Over the objective, Storey was unmolested by flak and spent as much time as possible over the target and turned for home. However, he was unaware that a special trip across the Atlantic Ocean was waiting for him.
