School trips: they're a step into the unknown, and for those of us with kids who need extra support it's not just remembering they need a packed lunch and there's different drop off & pick up times, it's the extra worry and nervousness that comes with an out of routine day, and my own anxiety about sending my child into a new space without knowing how much understanding there will be for his additional needs.
I have spent hours and hours hunting down information for Leo - I have scoured websites, social media pages, and written emails in my quest to be able to explain to him where he will be going, what he might expect, and what his class will be asked to do.
This experience has led Learning Leo Studio to produce, and freely share, an accessibility guide for venues who want to welcome children like Leo, who need more information and insight to an experience before they can engage with and gain value from their visit.
It explains why families like mine need more information than you might expect, and what kind of information is useful. It offers up some examples of how information has been shared by some venues, and a free poster template for venues to edit and use to get them started. I hope that it will help other parents approach venues and ask for the information their children need to feel more secure, and that it will help venues understand the positive impact more information can have.
You can find the guide for free on our website https://www.joannafallonstudio.com/learning-leo-studio, and we'd love to know what you think! What information is useful for your family, and how have venues supported your children?
