The best perennial on my cut flower plot…

🌼Giant Scabious🌼

The perfect lemony ruffles and long flower stems to die for!

Now is the perfect time to cut back perennials and give them a good mulch. And as the temperatures get milder, lift and divide them if needed.

What’s your favourite flowering perennial?

School holidays can be chaotic but I relish the slow mornings, no dragging people out of bed and rushing to get everyone out of the door. And this half term week we’ve definitely enjoyed the slow starts.

We’ve had lovely days out with friends (Manchester airport runway viewing park was brilliant, the pilots waved at the kids as they went past!) I’ve also managed to get the boys out for quite a few walks (with the occasional McDonald’s bribery!) and that’s meant we’ve spotted lots of spring flowers 😍 and we’ve the milder temperatures at the end of the week it’s definitely felt like spring is near!

I have managed to spend a bit of time in the garden clearing boarders (spent a good amount of time digging up the dreaded creeping buttercup that likes to invade my garden every winter!) I’ve also found time for some baking sessions too. I baked my 4th sourdough loaf and I’ve managed to keep my starter going for well over a month now 🙌🏻

I’ll be heading back to the flower plot next week to check on my spring bulbs (will we have daffodils ready for cutting soon?!), finish mulching the beds and start to get the polytunnel ready for the mass summer annual seed sowing that begins in a couple of weeks, I can’t wait! 🌱

What have been your highlights this week?

It’s been dull old month so far but that hasn’t stopped me cracking on with getting the gardening season underway 🌱

However, I have put a hold on sowing anymore seeds at the moment as light levels are just too low. My early February sowings of hardy annuals are germinating and growing slowly but I won’t be sowing any half hardy annuals until March.

And if you haven’t sown a single seed yet this year, that is absolutely fine. We still have plenty of time and, from my experience, the later sown flowers tend to be stronger plants.

My main focus this month so far has been on mulching and getting the soil in the best possible condition for when it comes to planting out. Healthy soil = healthy blooms!

What have you been up to in the garden this month so far?

Feeling inspired after reading article about searching for moments of glimmer - small moments of joy in everyday life, here are mine from this week….

🌸 Sowing sweet peas, snapdragons and larkspur and noting them down in my cut flower planner. Is there anything more satisfying than ticking off a to do list?!

🌸 Getting some of the flower beds mulched, a freshly mulched bed makes the whole plot look more tidy and ready for a new season.

🌸 Spotting hellebores in flower, spring is on its way!

🌸 Finally getting my sourdough starter to work and then bake a decent loaf - it’s a long process but a very enjoyable one.

🌸 A fun weekend in York with good friends! Nothing better for the soul than a good catch up with old friends.

What have your glimmer moments been this week?

February may still feel like winter but there’s plenty to do in the flower garden to set the stage for a beautiful spring and summer. Spring really is just around the corner now.

Here are some gardening jobs I’ll be on the flower plot this month and you can do in your garden too:

Keep sowing those hardy annuals, ill@be sowing more sweet peas, scabiosa, larkspur and snapdragons this month. Don’t be tempted to do half hardy annuals just yet (I know it’s tempting!!)

Don’t let the w**ds get comfy—pull them up before they take hold.

With cold snaps still lurking, make sure your plants are protected. I have a frost fleece ready and waiting for my ranunculus and anemones.

February is also the perfect time to prune roses and late-flowering clematis (group 3) to keep them looking their best.

And don’t forget—mulch, mulch, and more mulch! Your garden will thank you for it. Healthy soil = healthy blooms!

What have you got planned for the garden this month?

As winter’s chill lingers, the delicate snowdrop emerges, braving the frost to bring hope and renewal. These tiny white blooms, often seen pushing through snow covered ground, are a symbol of purity, hope and new beginnings.

I spotted the first snowdrops blooming near me this week. They are the first sign of the shifting seasons, heralding lighter and warmer days ahead.

There are some beautiful folklores about snowdrops. One of my favourites is an old European tale:

It is said that snowdrops were once ordinary green flowers. One winter, as the Snow Queen swept across the land, she noticed their resilience against the cold and gifted them her colour, pure white, as a mark of their courage. Ever since, snowdrops have symbolised the promise of spring.

Have you spotted any snowdrops flowering yet other signs that spring is not far away? Share in the comments 🤍

If you’ve spotted my Instagram name change (or maybe you haven’t! 😂), here’s why:

When I first started this account years ago, it was all about my floristry work with a sprinkle of growing my own cut flowers. But as time has gone on, I’ve discovered that growing cut flowers is where my heart truly lies.

Now, this space is all about my flower plot and sharing tips, tricks, and experiences from my cut flower journey. It only felt right to embrace that with a new name! 🌼✨

Thanks for being here and growing along with me!

Right now, the flower plot feels still and quiet. The soil is resting, the seeds are waiting, and the promise of spring is just below the surface (or starting to poke through if you look closely for bulbs growing 🌱) January is the month for dreaming and planning for what’s to come.

It might look bare now, but just wait a few months…

👉 Swipe to see the transformation! 🌸 and this never ceases to amaze me! That the tiny seeds waiting to be planted now, will be beautiful and colourful flowers in a few months time! And that is what keeps me gardening, the whole process is miraculous🌱✨💐

A few snaps from Christmas 📸✨

Lots of food, lots of family time & friends, and a trip to the seaside 🎄💕🌊

Apart from coming down with a horrible cold and throat infection on Boxing Day, it’s been a lovely week! I hope you’ve all had a restful and happy time too 🥂

I’ll be heading back from the coast tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to start properly planning the 2025 flower plot and garden renovations! I’ve had a few lovely gardening related gifts from Santa that will definitely help with this - I’ll share them on my stories when I’m home.

Did Santa bring you any garden gifts? 🎅🏻💕🌸

This week has been all about spring bulbs and kicking off Christmas festivities! 🌷🎄✨

The spring bulb sales are ON and I got some bargains for planting in pots around my front door and inside my house (fingers crossed for Christmas flowering hyacinths!) I also couldn’t resist tulip “Wedding Gift” for the cut flower plot, what a stunner! 😍

I kicked off Christmas celebrations this week with a trip to our local Luminate light display and a very festive dinner with cricket friends 💕🎄

There’s been some festive baking (Mary Berry’s mincemeat loaf cake is 🤤🤤🤤) and plenty of festive eating! 🥧

And after storm Darragh this weekend, I took my little helper to assess storm damage on the flower plot. Luckily there’s no damage, just a few w**d membrane covers blown about!

How have your gardens fared in the storm? I hope damage had been minimal 🙏🌱💕

As we enter the final month of the year, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my gardening season 🌱✨💐 after a lot of deliberation, here are my top 3 flowers that I grew this year…

💕 Rudbeckia “Marmalade” - these flowered prolifically from from early August all the way to our first snowfall nearly 2 weeks ago. They brought so much sunshine to the plot and my home during the grey autumn months.

💕 Cosmos “Double Click Pink Bonbon” - my all time favourite flower so I can’t not include this beauty but “seashells” and “candy stripe” were also gorgeous this year.

💕 Giant Scabious - this perennial was the perfect colour for early summer and produced so many gorgeous blooms on long stems. I can’t wait to see it flower again next year!

Shockingly, there are no dahlias on the list this year but they really didn’t have a good season thanks to the cold wet spring and early summer and the awful slug invasion! But dahlia “Islander” deserves a mention as it did produce some stunning blooms at the end of the season. Also, my snapdragons were prolific and gorgeous as always (this list is so hard to make 😂)

What have been your top flowers of 2024? Let me know in the comments 💕🌸

I feel like I’ve slowly dipped my toes into Christmas this week, especially with the arrival of the winter weather ❄️

Planting the tulip bulbs was a job I was very happy to tick off the list after buying my bulbs way back in August! But with snow and freezing temperatures on the forecast, I took the opportunity to get them in the ground before the snow blowed in. Knowing they’re slowing growing underground really helps with the winter blues 💙

I’ve ended the week with a very festive Christmas fair where I took my small collection of Christmas wreaths all made with dried flowers and foliage from my flower plot 🌸 thank you so much to everyone who popped by to say hello and buy one 💕💕💕now to make one for my own front door!

What have you been up to in the garden this week? Have you managed to get your tulip bulbs planted? 🌷✨💕

With just over 6 weeks left of the year here are my last gardening jobs that I need to get done before we wave goodbye to 2024…

Planting tulip bulbs, which is happening after this weeks cold snap ❄️ after a very mild autumn, this has been a long time coming!

And the cold snap also means it’s time to cut back and dig-up my dahlia tubers for winter storage. If you want some guidance on over-wintering dahlias, be sure to check out my free guide in the link in my bio.

Cut back the last of my summer flowers. I cut my last bunch of blooms last week but the plants will definitely be over after the frosts this week. So out they will come and the beds will be mulched and covered up for their winter nap.

Make the rest of my Christmas wreaths, which I create using all of the flowers & foliage I’ve grown and dried this year. I make a small selection of wreaths every year for friends and family. I will also have a few for sale at the Berkswich Parish Christmas fair. This is next Saturday 23rd November 1-4pm at Baswich Hall. If you’re local, please come and say hello 😊

What’s on your job list for the rest of 2024? Let me know in the comments 💕💐

October is Octobering 🍂🧡🍁

The leaves are definitely showing off now - their final fabulous moment before they fall, and everything seems to be infused with a warm, golden glow 🧡

Even for a self-proclaimed summer lover who can’t stand the darker months, when the sun shines on October, even I have to admit it is a beautiful month!

I’ve had a gorgeous day in the Peak District soaking up all the golden hues before they’re gone. How are you enjoying October?

A few happy moments from October so far 🧡🍂

Lots of jobs ticked off on the flower plot but still lots to be getting on with, including digging-up the cosmos and dahlias who are clinging on but are on numbered days 😢 especially after Thursday nights frost 🥶

The highlight of the month so far has to be seeing the northern lights over my garden. That was a real bucket list moment 🤩 Whats been your October highlight so far?
