Ozaru Books

Ozaru Books A small, independent publisher in Thanet, focusing on books about East Kent, East Asia and East Prussia.

Ōzaru Books is a small publisher based in the Kentish village of St Nicholas-at-Wade. Our primary focus is on books with a local connection, but we have a secondary interest in works in translation, particularly from Japanese. In addition, connections with the local East Kent area mean that some of our books are concerned with East Prussia and the exodus at the end of World War II. All of our publ

ications have ISBNs and are available from bookshops throughout the world as well as online retailers, although you are welcome to contact us if you have any difficulties in obtaining them.

First review of "Animal Guising", thanks to Folk London: "stands alone as a scholarly re-examination of the Kentish ritual … a detailed account … beautifully and extensively illustrated … right up to date … fascinating and absorbing … a comprehensive bibliography and an extensive appendix [with] a beautifully evocative first-hand account of what it is like to be [one of the] Hoodeners".

We couldn't have put it better ourselves! :-)

Good coverage from IoTN - thank you Kathy Bailes. We've also just seen an exceptional review by the Police History Society: "without a doubt this book raises the bar … a well-researched and comprehensive account … not a cheap book, but in terms of value for money, serious students … will not be disappointed … impressive book".

A book that has been seven years in the making, with five years of painstaking research into Margate Borough Police, has now been published. The 942 page book is the work of Margate resident and fo…

200 years ago today - 7 August 1822 - the Regalia sailed from the Downs (off Deal, Kent) to Van Diemen’s Land, carrying the Curling family from Shuart Farm, St Nicholas-at-Wade. To mark the bicentennial anniversary, we're publishing "Thanet to Tasmania", the first volume in a series by LucyAnn Curling from Eastry. The book describes the catastrophic circumstances that turned them into emigrants shortly after the Napoleonic Wars. The famous (notorious?) General Sir Charles James Napier proves to be key to the story... follow them down under and discover what 19C settler life was like.

Hiroshima is not a history lesson - ヒロシマは昔話ではない - was the message Murai Shimako constantly wanted to get across. As a woman of Hiroshima, she always felt guilty that she had not been in the city that day, when so many of her friends died, so she devoted her life to writing about the atomic bombing and its ongoing effects. This year too (today, 6 August 2022, is the 77th anniversary), 4978 more Hibakusha have been added to the list of victims, bringing the total to 333,907. That's without including Nagasaki.

"Sunflowers - Le Soleil" is a play about a young woman who only discovers decades later how her own life was impacted by the bomb. It's harrowing in places, but surprisingly upbeat too, to match the mood of modern Hiroshima.

Note for those curious about our books but not yet tempted to buy: we've just updated http://ozaru.net/ozarubooks/offers.html to include Amazon's Black Friday/Cyber Monday offers, including 2~3 months' unlimited reading on Kindle (at *zero* cost) and similar deals on audio books. Some of these offers expire on Tuesday so check them out now.

P.S. the new Margate book takes longer to print (because it's primarily a picture book, hence higher quality paper & ink), so if you want it for a Christmas gift, you'd need to order it within a day or so. Actually that's probably sensible for all items, given the usual rush...

Our first book was "Reflections in an Oval Mirror", published on 8 May 2008 (the author's 85th birthday). Today - the tenth anniversary of her death - we announce the publication of the same memoirs, translated into German and with high-resolution colourized pictures. Her sister's memoirs are also being published in German translation at the same time.
