Pylons submission to National Grid

A powerful response on behalf of its thousands of supporters has been submitted on Wednesday, March 6 by No Pylons Lincolnshire to National Grid’s Grimsby to Walpole Great Grid Upgrade consultation.

It calls National Grid to account on a number of important issues and forcefully makes the point that it absolutely opposes the pylon proposals.

It firstly challenges the consultation process itself and claims the proposals show no understanding of the significant adverse impacts pylons would have on the landscape, environment, heritage, businesses or quality of life of the communities affected.

The official No Pylons Lincolnshire response says the presentation of costings and the consideration of alternative approaches, as presented by National Grid, are based on an excessively narrow definition of value for money, do not follow Treasury Green Book guidelines and ignore all costs other than the capital cost of the proposed works.

“This masks the true full economic costs of the alternative approaches and favours the most intrusive and least appropriate option,” says the response.

“The proposals subject to this consultation are flawed. They ignore the importance of Lincolnshire’s agricultural economy to the food security of the United Kingdom,” it continues.

Lincolnshire produces an eighth of all England’s food, 30 per cent of its fresh produce and 18 per cent of its poultry. Food security is one of the Government’s key priorities, as acknowledged by the Prime Minister. There has been no account taken of the impact of these proposals on farming or food security.

It claims the pylons plan would saddle the county with the cheapest possible infrastructure for the next 50 years.

“We accept the need for additional electricity transmission infrastructure and we support the decarbonisation of electricity generation. But there are alternative approaches which would offer better value for money.”

It is clear from National Grid’s own consultation material that the decision to proceed with the project has already been made, and alternative options such as underground or undersea routes or upgrading existing infrastructure have been discounted.

The current consultation exercise appears to be little more than an administrative fig leaf designed to make a pre-determined outcome appear slightly less offensive.

National Grid’s preferred option appears to have been determined on solely financial grounds.

These deficiencies render the current exercise an insufficient basis on which to enable National Grid properly to conduct the next, statutory, stage of consultation.

The open vistas of the Lincolnshire landscape offer no relief from an 87-mile line of a minimum of 420 50-metre-tall pylons. It is a landscape which cannot stand the intrusion of disproportionately large, industrial structures.

These are judgements which clearly informed the 2012 decision to underground the link from the Triton Knoll windfarm to the Bicker Fen sub-station. If such considerations applied in 2012, it is difficult to understand why NG should now think it acceptable to route 440kV cables over a broadly similar route.

An integrated offshore grid has been demonstrated by National Grid to be technically feasible, better for consumers to the tune of £6bn, to offer environmental and socio-economic benefits and to be more effective the sooner it is started.

We therefore call on National Grid to:

1. engage in a genuine consultation process with the communities of Lincolnshire to identify the best approach to building transmission capacity with the least impact on landscapes, agriculture and socio-economic well-being;

2. engage in such consultation with an open mind, rather than a pre-determined preferred option;

3. support an approach to value-for-money assessment which follows the Treasury Green Book principles and does not simply ignore unmonetised costs and benefits;

4. adopt an integrated approach to transmission capacity development, reflecting the potential benefits of an integrated offshore grid.

See the full submission at

https://nopylons.co.uk/official-objections

Lincolnshire’s MPs, Lincolnshire County Council, district and parish councils are opposing the pylons plan and Victoria Atkins, MP for Horncastle and Louth, has launched a short four-question survey for constituents ending this Sunday (March 10). www.victoriaatkins.org.uk/news/pylon-survey-offshore-alternative

She is calling for an independent review of the offshore alternatives.

No Pylons Lincolnshire is urging everyone to take part in the current National Grid consultation, which ends on March 13.

The easiest way is to email your name and the sentence “I strongly oppose National Grid’s pylons proposal for Grimsby to Walpole” to [email protected] or write to Freepost G TO W (no stamp or further address required).

Think before you drink this festive season - book a taxi, arrange a lift or be the designated driver. It’s never worth the risk

Delivering the message by Sgt Mike Templeman

You attend the scene of a serious collision and you become aware very quickly that it is now a fatality. The scene can be absolutely horrific.

The most important thing we need to do, apart from look after the dignity of the person involved, is to find out who their next of kin is. We do not want the next of kin finding out through another source and as soon as you've got those details, someone needs to be asked to volunteer to go and pass the death message to the family.

You don't really think about what you’re going to say, all you do know from your experience is what you do say is going to affect and change this family’s life and the life of their friends for good.

When you approach the house sometimes you can hear people laughing inside and it just makes it all the more horrendous knowing that what you’re about to tell them is going to stop that laughter.

You knock on the door and what can seem like a lifetime before they answer it. Sometimes they look worried straight away, sometimes they just seem happy to see you, but they don't know why you're there. It only starts to dawn on them when you ask if you can step inside. And if the realisation hasn’t hit by then it soon does when you ask them to confirm if they are the next of kin.

Sometimes you can pass the message there and then, other times they’re that upset and that distraught they literally fall to the floor in front of you. You wait for a break before you can actually say the words that their loved one isn’t coming home again.

It's absolutely horrific for the families.

You stay as long as you can, you need to check on the welfare of all those that are in the house as well. The only thing you can then do is try and explain the process of what's going to happen with the Family Liaison Officer when they’re appointed.

And then you leave.

And you leave them to the grief.

And you go to the next job.

It's World Diabetes Day today...it is estimated that over 4.8 million people are living in the UK with diabetes, that's 1 in 16 people!

New research suggests that not only the issues around insulin levels but our sugar addiction is having some disastrous consequences for the next generations...

Research shows sugar shrinks the brain and messes up memory

In the 1980s sugar was thought to give you extra energy. Lucozade, a liquid form of glucose, was advertised as ‘energy for the human race.’

Yet, new studies are showing that too much glucose, and especially fructose, over time starves the brain of energy, leading to both memory loss and brain shrinkage. These two sugars interfere with the energy factories within cells, called mitochondria, and deprive the brain of the energy it needs to function properly.

The link between diabetes and dementia is well known - those with diabetes have four times the risk of dementia.

Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a long-term measure of glucose bound to red blood cells (haemoglobin) and is used by doctors to diagnose diabetes and monitor its therapy. HbA1c is a measure of damage produced by sugar spikes on red blood cells; a HbA1c of 6.5% or greater is diagnostic of diabetes. But long before this, in what is usually considered to be the ‘normal range’ teenagers with HbA1c above 5.4% show cognitive decline and shrinkage of the hippocampus in the central area of the brain compared to those with lower HbA1c levels.

Shrinkage of the hippocampus is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s and is used to diagnose the disease. A new study shows that 40-year-old adults with so-called normal glucose levels, but at the higher end of the normal range, have increased their risk of Alzheimer’s by 15%.

Furthermore, “In teenagers with raised, but normal levels of HbA1c, there is clear evidence of the same kind of memory problems, and the same areas of brain shrinkage seen in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease” says Robert Lustig, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco.

“Keeping your HbA1c below 5.4% with a no-added sugar diet, and for some a low-carbohydrate diet, is one of the most direct ways you can protect your brain at any age.” says Lustig.

The dementia prevention charity foodforthebrain.org has launched a home pinprick blood test to measure HbA1c. “Insulin resistance, the direct consequence of too much glucose in the bloodstream, ends up leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, starving the brain of energy with consequent loss of concentration and memory.” says nutritionist and psychologist Patrick Holford, CEO of the charity.

“We are calling for people to test their cognitive function with our free online test and measure their HbA1c with a home test kit, so we can really find out when problems occur and how to prevent cognitive decline.”

Over 400,000 people have taken the charity’s free online cognitive function test which tells you your future dementia risk and what to do to lower it.

Professor Robert Lustig thinks the problem got even worse when the food industry switched from sucrose, derived from cane, to high-fructose corn syrup, derived from corn; “High-fructose corn syrup is not more biologically evil; it’s economically evil, because it’s half the price of sucrose, so it found its way into all sorts of foods.”

“Too much fructose is dumbing us down. It’s also linked to aggressive behaviour...

The key message is to test HbA1c early if it is over 5.4% and act to bring it down by cutting right back on foods and drinks with added sugar including carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, and especially fruit juice. Nature never provides fructose without the requisite fibre. When God made the poison, he packaged it with the antidote. Eat your fruit, don’t drink it." says Lustig.

Do you have an incredible garden for wildlife? Plimsoll Productions, makers of documentaries like A Year on Planet Earth (ITV) and Night on Earth (Netflix), are producing a new natural history series for BBC One and are on the lookout for people with great stories to share.

They're hoping to film in five very different gardens across the UK , and while Lincolnshire can't offer mountains, red squirrels or wild boar, it would be great to see our local wildlife feature. If your outdoor space meets any of the following criteria - or has an amazing wildlife story of its own - please email [email protected] with details, along with photos and your postcode.

* Urban or city garden with regular foxes and/or badgers (ideally a badger sett or fox den actually in the garden)
* Garden with river or stream, with otters and/or beavers (ideally an otter's holt actually in the garden)
* Rural or countryside garden with regular fox/badger/hedgehog/stoat/polecat
* Garden bordering or embedded in deciduous woodland area with regular badger (sett)

Gardens should also have regular/nesting birds and a diversity of other animals such as amphibians, reptiles and insects.
