šŸ”“ Over a third of Labour donations at the last general election were from donors who previously gave money to other parties, Byline Times can reveal.

A record Ā£9.6 million was donated to Labour to fund its successful election landslide in July, but the sources of that war chest radically changed from past elections as the party tried to make up for faltering support from trade unions.

The Electoral Commission, which records donation data for elections, only covers major donations of over Ā£10,000.

šŸ”“The ā€œextreme distress and harmā€ suffered by detainees at UK immigration detention centres has been laid bare, with official figures showing that self-harm rates have soared there by 67%.

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) show that from June 2023 to May 2024 there were 513 instances of self-harm at UK immigration detention centres, up from 308 the previous year.

In the year to March 2024, there was a 51% increase in the number of people held in immigration detention since the previous year ā€“ from 1,183 to 1,783 ā€“ meaning self-harm rates are rising faster than that of the detention estate population.

Idel Hanley, Head of Advocacy at Medical Justice, described the figures as ā€œalarmingly highā€, adding: ā€œIt is well known that detention increases the risk of self-harm and su***de, amongst an often already vulnerable population.ā€
From January to May 2024 there were 285 instances of self-harm across the UKā€™s ten immigration detention centres, meaning self-harm incidents occurred almost twice a day during the five month period.

The figures come as an HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) report on the Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre published in July found the site to have ā€œthe worst conditionsā€ ever seen in immigration detention, with some areas of the centre described as ā€œfilthyā€ and ā€œdilapidatedā€. It is the largest detention centre in Europe; holds only men and the security in several wings is comparable to a Category B (high security) prison, according to charity, Detention Action.

Inspectors found that ā€œdrug use had become increasingly prevalentā€ at the centre and that ā€œpopulation pressures in prisons had led to more ex-prisoners in the centre, often with serious offending historiesā€. Threats, abuse and theft were far more common at Harmondsworth than at other immigration detention centres, the report ā€“ entitled, ā€˜Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre: drugs, despair and decrepit conditionsā€˜ ā€“ found.

šŸ”“The abuse, torture and death of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and detention facilities has finally been covered by the Western media following a report by Israelā€™s leading human rights organisation last week called ā€˜Welcome to Hellā€™ ā€“ but it has been going on ā€œfor decadesā€.

The international coverage of Bā€™Tselemā€˜s findings ā€“ it collected the testimonies of 55 Palestinians held, mostly without charge, since Hamas launched its attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 ā€“ also comes on the heels of an Israeli investigation into the alleged sexual assault of Palestinian prisoners at one of its notorious detention centres, Sde Teiman, in the south of the country.

20/08/2024

Ukraineā€™s cross-border offensive in Russiaā€™s Kursk region has once again demonstrated Kyivā€™s ability to humiliate Moscow and inflict severe losses on its military.

The move ā€“ the first occupation of Russian territory since the Second World War ā€“ furthers suggestions that Russian President Vladimir Putin can neither achieve the goals of his so-called ā€œspecial military operationā€ in the neighbouring country nor maintain control over Russian territory. So, what happens now?

Two months before Kyiv launched its military operation in western Russia, Putin made what he described as ā€œanother true peace proposalā€ to Ukraine. He urged Ukrainian leadership to recognise Moscowā€™s annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya, insisting on a full ā€œdemilitarisation and denasificationā€ of the Eastern European country.

ā€œObviously, the realities on the ground and on the line of engagement will continue to change, and not in favour of the Kyiv regime,ā€ Putin said.
However, on August 6, the opposite happened. Ukrainian forces entered Russian territory, capturing several villages and towns in the Kursk region. Reports suggest that the Ukrainian military continues advancing, as Moscow has a hard time stabilising the front.

As a result, now that the realities on the ground have shifted in favour of Ukraine, Dmitry Polyansky, the first Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, has stated that Putinā€™s peace proposal is ā€œno longer valid.ā€ However, current developments in Kursk might force the Kremlin to make some concessions.

šŸ”“Hate Sells: ā€˜The Spectator Cannot Defend Douglas Murray But It Wonā€™t Sack Himā€™

The columnist is Douglas Murray, who has never made a secret of his loathing for Islam, and who, it has now emerged, explicitly endorsed the idea that the public should take the law into their own hands and ā€œsort outā€ Muslims and immigrants.

Murrayā€™s statement, naturally, attracted attention and Nelson, who employs him as Associate Editor of the magazine as well as a columnist, was asked to sack him or to at least condemn his remarks. He did neither.

Instead, he wrote an article: ā€˜In Defence of Douglas Murrayā€™.

Strikingly, nowhere did Nelson find room in this to remind his readers of the remarks complained of, which were, with reference to British Muslims involved in protests in London against the Israeli war in Gaza: ā€œIf the Army will not be sent in, then the public will have to go in, and the public will have to sort this out themselves and itā€™ll be very, very brutal.ā€

Nelson made no attempt to defend or excuse these words ā€“ presumably because they are so obviously inflammatory.

Instead, in his second paragraph, he resorted to disinformation: ā€œAn interview he [Murray] gave months ago has been selectively edited and republished to misrepresent him and, in effect, make out that he was encouraging riots.ā€

If this was a denial that the words were spoken, you might think that Nelson would show the detail. What form did this selective editing take? How exactly was Murray misrepresented? And, if he wasnā€™t encouraging riots, what did he say?

Few in the media will inspect the role that they have played, toxifying the political culture against migrants and Muslims. They are more likely to blame hooliganism, the end of the football season, or the ā€˜fecklessā€™ working class. But the evidence this newspaper has accumulated since its inception suggests that the riots were much more than a spontaneous outburst of anger and resentment, boredom and opportunism.
