"I know many of our members went into news because they didn’t see themselves, their views, or their communities represented and believed they could do things differently and have an impact.

"They may well feel that purpose all the more acutely with the upcoming 2024 super elections (the greatest voting event in human history). The United States, Mexico, South Africa, India and, potentially, the United Kingdom, are all among the nations that will head to the polls in what is sure to be a huge test of publishers across the globe.

"As our members, and the wider media industry, prepare to cover one of the most consequential political periods of our time, the stakes are higher than ever: they are the caretakers, responsible for providing news that will ensure electorates are well-informed. This includes sourcing accurate information, fact-checking political claims, reporting on polling and public opinion and holdthe ing powerful institutions to account."

📅 in 2022, Impress launched the News Literacy Report.

Drawing on a survey of more than 3,000 members of the public, carried out in collaboration with the Universities of Derby and Leeds, the research found:

📉 More than half the population admitted to having low levels of news literacy.

😔 Confidence in the news remains low.

“The message couldn’t be clearer," Impress Chair, Richard Ayre said upon the report being launched.

"If we want to improve trust in journalism the whole industry needs to engage more openly with the public about news values, about how high standards can be achieved, and about the role regulation can play in maintaining those standards."

Here are some of the other key findings from the study 🕵️‍♂️

📝 We have written to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer highlighting the urgent need for robust cost protections for journalists and publishers.

In a recent press release published on the Government website, Frazer hailed the new Media Bill for having ‘media freedom at its core’ and removing Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013.

However, as Section 40 was never enacted, removing it does nothing to improve press freedoms for journalists and publishers.

Only new, robust cost-protections will do that.

We are delighted to see several Impress members nominated for Press Gazette’s British Journalism Awards 2023! 🥳

The Ferret, The Scottish Beacon and Migrant Women Press are represented among the nominees ahead of the ceremony at the Hilton Bankside on December 14.

“I am ecstatic to once again see so many Impress members nominated for these prestigious industry awards," Impress CEO Lexie Kirkconnell-Kawana said of the news.

"I want to add my congratulations to The Ferret, Scottish Beacon and Migrant Women Press for their innovative and impactful work.

“Impress has always been committed to upholding press freedoms, the rights of communities and individuals and improving diversity of thought and voice in the industry; these achievements show that committing to high standards and rigorous press regulation does not stop publishers from being industry leaders.”

It's time we talked about cost protections for publishers again.

Impress CEO Lexie Kirkconnell-Kawana has written an opinion piece for Byline Times calling for an alternative to Section 40 that provides exactly that.

We recently saw the likes of the Guardian, the Mirror and The National pull articles on Dan Wootton's arrest after receiving legal threats from the former GB News presenter and Mail Online columnist.

Without a doubt, legal threats can present an existential challenge to news publishers. Litigation costs are, on average, £750,000 and most legal cases now take years to be resolved through the courts.

Even if an editorial team stands behind an investigation, the spectre of litigation can collapse a news business, even more so now because of the fragile post-digital news business model.

A future in which publishers are protected by the threat of exorbitant and debilitating legal fees, and where the Woottons of the world must go through an independent body rather than targeting individual newsrooms, must be fought for.

It was a pleasure to attend the Future Of Journalism Conference last week, where we presented the findings of our News Literacy Report, alongside researcher Julie Firmstone, and other amazing presenters! 🤩

Increasing trust levels in news among the public is absolutely essential.

So it was incredibly encouraging to hear and engage in so many discussions about how this can be done moving forwards

It shined a light on the importance of collaboration when it comes to achieving this goal.

So, after our News Literacy Report, we want to keep partnering with academics and groups.
