We asked our listeners to nominate someone they think is truly DIVINE! Here’s one of your finalists…

Katie Hughes
My friend Katie is divine in every sense of the word. She has walked through heartbreak most people could never survive — losing her son, her father, and so many others she’s loved — yet she still moves through the world with a tenderness that takes your breath away. Even when life tries to pull her under, she somehow finds the strength to lift others up. She gives love freely, shows grace even while she’s breaking inside, and would do anything to ease someone else’s pain. Her spirit, her courage, and her capacity to care make her a divine light in a world that desperately needs people like her.
What sets her apart from others is the way she turns her pain into compassion. Instead of becoming hardened by loss, she has become more gentle, more giving, and more aware of the struggles of those around her. Her heart remains open in a world that often closes people down — and that rare, quiet strength is what makes her truly divine.

Rob is one of the founders of Project Southchurch, a community-led initiative to improve the Southchurch area by fostering community spirit, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the environment, aiming to make it a better place to live, work, and visit through events, campaigns, and collaborations with local authorities and police. Rob organizes meetings, business expos, Christmas markets (like ‘Frostbite’), and advocate for better public spaces and transport, focusing on unity and resident engagement. He is the heart of the community and a wonderful leader.

Klair Bear
I’d like to nominate Klair Bear (that’s her name on Facebook and Instagram) she is such a lovely human being, always there for everyone and going above and beyond to make your day a bit better. Klair is endlessly generous, helpful and supportive to all the musicians, young and old, passing through Mushroom Studios. Most people arriving for a practice are tired, maybe nervous, needing last minute equipment help or a new band member suggestion. Klair and her partner Mick are always a calming, supportive presence for the bands that rehearse at the studio. Their studio is always clean and they are the only local studio to provide free sanitary protection for female musicians.

Sam Mackie
Sam joined St.Mark’s church as our LGBTQI* chaplain this year, moved from the north to live locally in order to take up a role which was brand new and needed someone who could think on their feet! Their work, their presence and passion for supporting the LGBTQI* community in Southend has already made an impact on so many people especially the trans community who have come under a variety of cruel abuses recently. Sam has had to live so frugally due to high cost of living here but this has not stopped them believing that this is the right and the divine thing for them to be doing!

Adrian Besly
Adrian is an extremely caring person. He is a nurse at Southend Hospital but when his shift is over his caring side doesn’t stop. He is always there for his friends in their time of need and I’d love to nominate him for this reason. He has done amazing and inspiring things like travel around the world on a bike, learnt the harmonica and been part of a Blues Brother’s tribute act, he organises group walking holidays for NHS staff involving challenges like climbing Snowdon and he also co-runs Westcliff Judo teaching martial arts, for free, to our young people.
