🚨Emergency Drug Trays are your quick rescue agents. When I’m with learners in the clinical area, this is one of the first things I introduce to them because it’s ubiquitous in all anaesthetic rooms. As an anaesthetic practitioner, it is absolutely helpful that you know what the drugs are used for so you can immediately have one ready when you start noticing abnormalities in the vitals.
🆘I’d just like to emphasise that we do have an Emergency Drug Box, which we use during an arrest. These have the adrenaline, amiodarone, etc in it.
I’d love to know what the practice of others are. I went to observe in a private hospital and they place metaraminol in theirs. Let me know what you do in yours 🥰 or if there’s anything you want explained.

As if the job is not hard enough, you learn something new every day, and what ‘s more, you teach someone new something new as well. 😅 mentoring or showing someone the ropes is part of the job. So when I encounter something new, or trying to find my groove around working, I try to approch it with teaching in mind, “How would I make this easy for something who is new to Anaesthetics?” That usually helps me retain or create a system of working…if that makes any sense. What techniques do you employ in teaching? Let me know 😘

🤓A lot of terms here if you’re not from UK:
- FBC (full blood count = complete blood count)
- U’s and E’s (aka U&E or Urea and Electrolytes, helps assess kidney function)
- echo (echocardiogram)
- MOT (Ministry of Transportation test, a yearly inspection that vehicles in the United Kingdom must undergo to ensure they are roadworthy).
Not gonna lie..it’s a bit much for me at the moment. I’ve questioned myself why I transferred many times the past few weeks, especially when I struggle with time management, pathways and basically what to do.
We also refer patients and notes (patient charts) for anaesthetists to review and it is quite amusing to see most do not seem to recognise me just because my hair is down and I’m not on scrubs.
But the good thing is I don’t find it daunting to speak to them about me needing them to make decisions about things because I’ve worked with most of them in theatres. 😅
You almost always feel uncomfortable when you’re somewhere new. I always try to think it’s like breaking into a fresh pair of shoes. It feels a lot better after a couple of callouses or sometimes, healed blisters.

✌️ Two experiences in one.
That’s one of the perks I have with my current employer. While others want to focus and concentrate in their specialisation, I want to see a different side of my patients’ journey and also challenge myself in a new field.
It is not uncommon to find people like me with more than one job role, especially in the NHS—some do part of their hours in Education, then work in the ward, while others do ED and do eye injections. I feel like this arrangement makes me appreciate the skills I’ve acquired and at the same time realise how much of what I’ve learned are transferrable.
I’m a fish out of the water in Preassessment at the moment, but luckily, I have a very supportive mentor, colleagues and manager.
Sharing with you more next time! 🥳

I have never thought I would be where I am today but I kept trying out new areas. I’ve learned a lot about myself and how adaptable I can be. Usually in the early phases, I find myself pulling my hair out and regretting because of all the discomfort. That feeling that you don’t know anything can be hard to overcome especially if you do not have supportive colleagues/mentor. However, a great manager and nurturing co-workers can make a world of difference. So, look for that camaraderie. It can make any toxic job worth doing and worth staying for. Keep an open mind. Every job gives you transferrable skills that help you every step of the way. 🌱❤️

Being an overseas nurse was a bit much at first. I remember thinking, “I’ll just finish my contract and that’s it. I’ll go home afterwards.” But now, after 5 years of working here, I look forward to weekend walks in the forest, lovely road trips by the countryside, summer plans in nearby countries and Christmas markets in December, when we enjoy mulled wine and churros as we brave the cold winds.
The grass is always greener on the other side, and it always thrives where you water it, so choose where you want to do your battles. It is great that overseas nurses have formed communities where people can share ideas and experiences, but it has also been apparent that a lot of people tend to throw shade on others’ choices. Each individual’s experience is different, so it’s wonderful if we talk about what we went through and not assume that others will have the same ordeal as we do.
If you are confused whether or not you should step out of your comfort zone, just ask yourself, “Will my choice be something I will not be regretting when I’m 80?”
Good luck! I’m always rooting for you! ✨
