Pest Control Smoke Bombs Trigger False Alarms, Firefighters Urge Caution

Date: 20 September, 2024

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have issued a warning to residents following a series of false alarms caused by pest control smoke bombs. In recent weeks, the service has been called out multiple times after smoke clouds from these devices were mistaken for fires, leading to unnecessary emergency responses.

The incidents, which have occurred across the region, including in blocks of flats, involved the use of fumigation bombs intended to kill insects such as fleas. These devices release large amounts of smoke, often triggering smoke alarms and prompting concerned residents or passers-by to dial 999.

One such incident took place in August at Ventnor Court in Southampton, where around 20 firefighters responded to a third-floor flat after reports of smoke and a sounding alarm. Firefighters forced entry into the property, only to discover the smoke was coming from a flea bomb. While an ambulance crew was called, they were stood down once it became clear there was no fire. Firefighters remained on the scene to ventilate the flat and conduct a home fire safety check.

Station Manager Pete McClemont said: “The fumes which these devices can generate are enough to set off smoke alarms in your home. Smoke bombs are best left to pest control experts, who know how to manage the risks. The people who reported these incidents to the fire service by dialling 999 did exactly the right thing upon hearing an alarm and seeing smoke.”

McClemont added that while these calls were made in good faith, residents planning to use smoke bombs should inform the fire service beforehand. This allows emergency responders to be aware of the situation and prevents fire engines and other resources from being taken away from real emergencies.

The fire service is urging residents to follow key safety guidelines when using fumigation devices:
- Use professional pest control services or seek proper advice.
- Inform neighbours and the fire service prior to using smoke bombs.
- Follow all instructions on the device and use in appropriate locations.
- Ensure the chemicals involved are handled with care, as they could be harmful.

Residents are also reminded to take steps to keep their homes fire-safe, with further information available on the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service website.

This series of incidents has sparked concern, as firefighters from Hightown, St Mary’s, Eastleigh, and Burley were all dispatched to calls involving pest control smoke bombs during August, unnecessarily tying up valuable resources.

Update - Service Suspension Extended for The Hythe Ferry Amid Financial Review

Date: 20 September, 2024

The Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company have announced an extension to its service suspension, with operations now unlikely to resume until at least early October. The company is still in the process of assessing the financial investments required to safely restore ferry services.

In a recent statement, the company explained that over the past two weeks, they have been seeking quotes from multiple external contractors for essential repairs and upgrades. However, the process has been delayed due to incomplete responses.

"It is important we have a number of quotes to review, but we are yet to receive all responses, so the service suspension will be extended until at least early October," a spokesperson for the company stated. "This extension allows sufficient time to assess the quotes thoroughly and ensure the most sustainable and safe decision is made."

The ferry service, which connects Hythe with Southampton, has been suspended for several weeks, impacting both daily commuters and visitors to the area. The ferry company, however, remains committed to bringing the service back.

“We are committed to finding a solution to bring The Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company back,” the statement said, with further updates promised in early October.

In the interim, the ferry company has reassured customers that their team is available to answer any queries.

For assistance, residents and users can contact the company via phone, email, or through their official page:

- Phone: 02380 840722
- Email: [email protected]

The ferry, which serves as a crucial transport link across Southampton Water, has strong community support, and many are hopeful for a swift resolution to the ongoing service disruption.

Drivers Urged to Be Cautious as Pannage Season Begins in the New Forest

Date: 17 September, 2024

With the start of pannage season in the New Forest, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Roads Policing are warning drivers to be extra vigilant to avoid collisions with free-roaming animals. This year, pannage season runs from Monday, 16 September to Friday, 22 November 2024, during which pigs are released into the forest to feed on fallen acorns and other nuts that can be harmful to ponies and cattle.

Pannage, an ancient practice, allows ‘Commoners’ to release their pigs into the forest to consume acorns, which are toxic to the ponies and cattle that freely roam the area for most of the year. While this helps protect other animals, it also increases the risk of animals wandering onto roads, particularly as the nights grow longer.

Last year, on 29 September, a pig was fatally struck by a vehicle on Stoney Cross Plain Road in the New Forest. The driver did not stop at the scene but was later identified following an investigation by the Country Watch team. The driver, a man in his 40s from Grimsby, was issued a Conditional Caution and required to pay £300 in compensation to the pig’s owner.

Under Section 170(8) of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to fail to report a collision with certain animals, including horses, cattle, pigs, and dogs. Drivers involved in such incidents must stop, check on the animal if it is safe to do so, and report the collision to the police. Failure to do so can lead to penalties.

Police are urging drivers to be especially cautious during this period. In the event of a collision, motorists are advised to call 999 and provide their location. To assist with this, the police recommend downloading the What3Words app, which can pinpoint exact locations and aid emergency responders.

Motorists are encouraged to remain aware of wildlife crossings, adhere to speed limits, and always report any incidents involving animals immediately.

Electric Blanket Fire Sparks Safety Warning from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service

Date: 16 September, 2024

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service (HIWFRS) has issued an urgent safety warning to residents following a bedroom fire caused by an electric blanket over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to the incident on Saturday, 14 September, after the blanket ignited and caused significant damage. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, but the service is using the event to remind the public of the potential dangers of faulty or poorly maintained electric blankets.

With colder weather arriving last week, many households may be reaching for electric blankets to keep warm as autumn sets in. HIWFRS are urging people to check their blankets thoroughly before use, looking for signs of wear and tear such as frayed wires, scorch marks, or damaged plugs.

Electric blankets can be a great way to stay warm during the colder months, but if they are damaged or faulty, they can pose a serious fire risk.

The fire service recommends the following:

• Before using the blanket, read and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some can be used under the person in the bed others go over the top.

• Check the electric blanket frequently for detached tie tapes, frayed edges, scorch marks and damaged or loose electrical connections and that the connector isn't over-
heating. Also make sure that the control doesn't make a buzzing noise or give off a scorching smell.

• Never use a hot water bottle in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off.

• Unplug blankets before you get into bed unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use.

• When storing an electric blanket, don't fold it as this may damage the internal wiring. Store flat or rolled up.

• Get your blanket tested by a qualified electrician at least every three years.

• If your blanket is more than 10 years old, you should consider disposing of it and buying a new one. Blankets being disposed of should be taken to a recycling facility which accepts electric and electronic appliances.

For residents who are unsure about the safety of their blankets, HIWFRS suggests taking advantage of testing events or considering purchasing a new, safer model.

This warning comes at a critical time as the temperature begins to drop, and households across the region prepare for the colder months ahead.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Backs National Campaign to Combat Spiking Incidents

Date: 16 September, 2024

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has thrown its support behind a National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) campaign this week, aimed at raising awareness about the growing issue of drink and drug spiking. The campaign highlights the dangers of spiking and the significant impact it has on victims, with police urging the public to report incidents immediately.

Recent national data reveals that between May 2022 and April 2023, police forces across the country received 6,732 reports of spiking. Police believe, however, that this number is likely to be an underestimation, as many incidents go unreported. The campaign aims to clarify misconceptions about spiking, stressing that it’s not just about adding drugs to a drink – it can also involve secretly increasing the alcohol content of someone’s drink without their knowledge or consent.

Chief Superintendent Clare Jenkins, Violence Against Women and Girls lead for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, reinforced that spiking incidents can occur in a range of scenarios, regardless of whether the victim has consumed alcohol or drugs beforehand.

“We take each and every report of spiking very seriously – all whilst protecting those who need our help – including those who have fallen victim to episodes of drink spiking whilst out enjoying the night time economy that Hampshire has to offer.

“We are absolutely clear that we do not tolerate any form of spiking at all. Individuals who are going out intending to behave in this way in our local communities will be found, will be stopped and will be brought to justice via the criminal justice system.”

Spiking victims often experience a range of symptoms, including confusion, slurred speech, nausea, vomiting, paranoia, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. Police are urging anyone who believes they have been spiked to come forward immediately. Victims are advised to call 999 if a crime is in progress, or to report non-emergency cases via 101 or online.

As part of their commitment to tackling spiking, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has introduced multi-drug urine testing kits, enabling officers to better detect drugs used in spiking incidents.

The campaign forms part of a broader effort to safeguard those enjoying the region’s night-time economy and to deter criminal activity. For more information on the latest statistics and the steps being taken to ensure public safety, the Constabulary has directed the public to their website.

Bargate Police Team Make Two Key Arrests in Burglary and Drug Supply Incidents

Date: 15 September, 2024

Officers from the Bargate Neighbourhood Police Team have made two significant arrests in Southampton’s city centre, targeting burglary and drug-related crime.

In the first case, a man convicted of multiple commercial burglaries was re-arrested after breaching court bail conditions. Officers, acting on live intelligence, swiftly located and detained the individual. A search revealed the below item in his possession, leading to additional charges on suspicion of going equipped for burglary. The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, where further charges will be reviewed.

Teen Arrested for Drug Supply

In a separate incident, officers patrolling near Cumberland Place spotted a 15 year old male acting suspiciously, approaching members of the public. Suspecting he might be carrying a weapon, officers attempted to stop the teen under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. However, the youth resisted violently, dragging officers across a live carriageway. Emergency assistance was called, and the suspect was restrained and taken into custody.

Upon further search, officers found approximately 80 individually wrapped Class A drugs on the teenager. He was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and remains in custody while investigations continue.

Despite sustaining minor injuries, the officers involved were able to continue their duties.

The Bargate Neighbourhood Police Team remains committed to making Southampton’s streets safer.
