I write a tune. It takes me around 5-6 hours mainly. To do an EP takes around 24 hours. Add in the fact that artwork needs doing (£20-£50). Mastering (£15 per track), Uploading. Promo. You can say realistically that a 4 track EP takes around a week to do from inception to release.
I work fast.
So, at minimum wage, if paid, would generate £400 per week.
I sell wavs through bandcamp for £1.25 each. I'd need 300 combined sales to get paid a minimum wage on that one EP.
This doesn't happen. In the 4 years of Lazarus Recordings, not one of the labels releases has reached the £400 threshold. And my label is viewed as relatively good and popular in this very small scene.
I'm not telling you this because it's negative (I love what I do, and will never stop!), it's just reality.
So, next time you look online for those freebies, illegal DL sites and sharing other people's music without the artists permission, then please consider that in a scene as niche and as small as the one we are in literally has no money in it and before too long, production will fall down the list of priorities as it doesn't put food on the table.
So all I am asking, is please consider ALL the artists when looking for newer music. Even if it's being given away, consider those that put time and effort into doing the product you'd like to own.
One love ❤️
