Our Story
BBC Pashto is part of the BBC World Service Group and was launched in August 1981 to reach out to over 50-60 million Pashto speakers in Afghanistan, Pakistan and around the world. Nabi Misdaq was its founder and first editor.
Initially, the service only had radio programmes, covering mainly news and current affairs. However it later expanded by introducing entertainment slots, long features, art magazines, hard talk interviews and interactive shows such as Stasy Ghag.
By January 2019 BBC Pashto had expanded into one of Afghanistan’s leading media outlets with multiple radio bulletins throughout the day, a half-hour TV bulletin and a dedicated website and social media pages .
