The Asian Today is an award winning free monthly newspaper published and distributed in the Midlands, England. It is a community newspaper providing the region's south-Asian community access to important news stories, interviews and current events. We encourage community interaction and dialogue as well as provoking debate and discussion. The Asian Today began in September 2002 under its original

name, The Asian Leader, before briefly adopting Your Leader in August 2005 and then permanently rebranding itself as The Asian Today in September 2005. The newspaper is one of the few English language newspapers circulated in the Asian community but is said to be the widest read ethnic newspaper in the Midlands. Its distribution and readership spans Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Coventry, largely emcompassing areas with a high south-Asian population.

Locals have shown their support to a landlord who turned his driveway into a car park to help Heartlands Hospital workers and undercutting their parking fees.

Akeel Ahmed, 33, spent around £20,000 turning the land outside his house opposite Heartlands Hospital, in Bordesley Green, into a car park for up to 20 vehicles.

He charges £5 for all-day parking a saving on the £10.20 for up to 24 hours by the hospital.

British Pakistan Actor Riz Ahmed has won his first Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action) for The Long Goodbye with Aneil Karia.

Accepting the award, Ahmed said: “In such divided times, we believe that the role of story is to remind us there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’. There’s just ‘us’.”

He continued: “This is for everyone who feels like they don’t belong. Anyone who feels like they’re stuck in no man’s land. You’re not alone. We’ll meet you there. That’s where the future is. Peace.”

Back in 2020, Ahmed released the concept album The Long Goodbye. The LP saw the British-Pakistani actor, musician, and activist recounting what it’s like to be Brown and British in the modern day.

Police are urging people to not approach a 33-year-old man who has gone missing from a health facility, but to call 999 immediately.
Mustafa is 5ft 6ins tall and was last seen leaving a facility in Birmingham on Monday 28th March. Police believe he could be in the Lozells area.
Police are concerned for his wellbeing and have urged the public not to approach Mustafa but to contact them instead. Anyone who has information on his whereabouts should ring 999 and quote MPBE/3145/22.

A married Leicester man was jailed for eight years for grievous bodily harm on his ex-mistress.

Arfan Hussein 31-year-old was found guilty by a Leicester Crown Court jury of inflicting grievous bodily harm, with intent, upon the woman, whose injuries included a fractured eye socket, two broken ribs and knife wounds to her head, ear and hand.

Police have made another arrest in connection with a fatal crash that killed two men from the Cotswold. Leicestershire Police said a 20-year-old man from Leicester was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday morning (March 7) following the fatal collision on the A46 last month.

Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, both aged 21 and from Banbury, suffered fatal injuries in the crash on Friday, February 11. They were inside a silver Skoda Fabia and pronounced dead at the scene.

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is urging people to register their interest in the tens of thousands job opportunities that will become available between now and the Games.

The recruitment drive has been launched today to encourage people to register their interest in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the biggest event ever to take place in the West Midlands.

To ensure Birmingham 2022 is a success, a huge workforce of people will be needed. Over 20,000 roles are available with contractors, with an additional 600 job opportunities during the Games within the Birmingham 2022 organising committee itself.

A mother and daughter from Stoke, along with another woman from Birmingham have been charged with murder and will stand trial in September.

TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari, 22, her mother Ansreen Bukhari, 45, and Natasha Akhtar appeared in the dock at Leicester Magistrates Court following the crash on the A46 dual carriageway in Leicestershire in the early hours of last Friday morning.

Akhtar, of Alum Rock Road, and Ansreen and Mahek, both of George Eardley Close, Stoke-on-Trent, were remanded into custody by the judge until a plea hearing on March 18.

The Queen of melody, singer Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s biggest cultural icons, has passed away aged 92.

The star was hospitalised on January 11 with Covid but this Sunday morning died of multiple organ failure at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

Born in 1929, Mangeshkar’s career spanned eight decades – from the era of Frank Sinatra to Adele – having begun singing on stage aged just nine.

The singer went on to perform an estimated 15,000 songs in more than a dozen languages, her voice has rung out of television sets, on crackly airwaves and from movie theatres and was the voice of Bollywood, working with nearly every director, actor and actress in the industry.

Known as the “Melody Queen” and “Nightingale of India”, she enthralled listeners with her lilting voice and singing everything from patriotic songs to romantic numbers, both in films and albums.

The couple married in India in December 2018 in a two-day event that included Christian and Hindu ceremonies.

A man from West Bromwich has gone missing after he popped to the shops on Saturday January 15.

Sukhdev, 45, left for the shops at 4.20am and was last seen wearing a brown jacket, a blue cap, grey trousers, and shoes.

He is described as 5ft 11ins tall, with short black hair and stubble.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We need your help to find missing Sukhdev, 45.

Preet Chandi, 32, from Derby, had completed the 700 mile trek in 40 days, having fought temperatures in Antarctica as low as -50c and wind speeds as high as 60mph.
