After two years of live-streamed premieres, #straight8 is set to make a raucous return to the big screen, with this year’s best super 8mm masterpieces premiering at the UK’s national cinematheque @britishfilminstitute
Join us as the top 25 short films of 2022, each made on just one cartridge of Super 8 film, hit the silver screen for the first time.
What makes STRAIGHT 8 screenings so unique, is that not only are the audience seeing the films for the first time but also each of the filmmaking teams are getting to see their work for the very first time too. As all the films have been shot on one role of film, with all editing happening ‘in-camera’.
Every year all STRAIGHT 8 entry films are processed and scanned at @cinelabuk And every year we are astounded by the creativity, originality, and quality of the filmmakers.

Michael Grandage's highly anticipated MY POLICEMAN, starring among others Harry Styles, is set for a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Amazon Studios film was lensed by director of photography Ben Davis, with digital dailies colour by Cinelab’s Head of Colour Darren Rae @darren.rae.333
MY POLICEMAN will be released in select theatres on October 21 and streaming on Prime Video November 4.

THE VIRTUAL LLAMA
@owl_inspace ‘s new Sci-Fi short film examines our search for identity in a progressively virtual world. Directed by Tom Cozens, lensed by Simeon Geyer and graded by @cinelabuk colourist Joshua Callis-Smith. The team decided to utilise Cinelab’s analogue intermediate process to transfer digital footage to celluloid film.
Our Digital-to-film-to-digital (DFD) process adds real film grain and texture to the digital image. We process and scan the film back to digital with the authentic film look applied.
You can choose to convert to 35mm, 16mm or even 8mm. In this video you can see the difference of the conversion to 16mm for THE VIRTUAL LLAMA.
The Virtual Llama is currently in Festivals and set to release publicly in 2023.

LAB TOUR WITH RIBSY
A film and photography enthusiast and lover of all things analogue @ribsy__ recently paid us a visit at Cinelab Film & Digital for a tour of the lab and a look behind-the-scenes of the services we offer.
Ribsy has made a great mini-doc that you can watch on his YouTube channel 🔗 Link in bio.
We showed Ribsy our film processing facilities, from prep through to development and scanning. He had a look at our new OXScan 12K large format scanner and got to grips with 65mm. At the other end of the scale Ribsy went out and shot some S8mm footage and he got to see how good it looks and feels when scanned by top-end digital scanners. Ribsy also took a look at our digital-to-film-to-digital analogue intermediate process with the Arrilaser. Director Tom Dream channels the joy and charisma of Francis Bourgeois (train enthusiast / internet sensation) into a whimsical alpine world featuring the new range of The North Face x Gucci collection.
Tom comments, “I collaborated closely with Josh Wilson, art director at High Snobiety, taking inspiration from the gentle chaos of French new wave cinema, which inspired each aspect of the creative approach. We shot on 16mm film, predominantly on track and dolly, with choreographed movement direction throughout to help create a sense of urgency and chaos, elevated further in the edit. The playful music score was created entirely out of synthesised train sounds by composer Steve Pringle, inspired by the sounds of steam whistle organs and early synth effects.”

Lucien Nunes is one of the British film industries foremost technicians. Cinelab CTO Joshua Callis-Smith points out that he's engineered most of the equipment we still use on set. Lucien has long had a dream for a museum of electrical technology: a learning resource to help new generations connect with the objects of the past, that evolved to bring us to where we are today. Sadly, Lucien has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. However, in a typical Lucien spin on the situation this isn’t a death sentence but an impetus, there’s a deadline to finally get this project off the ground. Can you help us?
