Video Terminology Explained – What is a pan?

Yes, you can cook in one, but what does it mean with regards to video?

A pan is a horizontal camera movement which is done while the camera is recording and can also be faked (somewhat) in the edit.

The opposite of a pan is called a tilt, this features a vertical movement.

Video Terminology Explained – What is a Shotgun Mic?

A Shotgun Mic is a microphone designed to capture audio from one specific direction (the direction it is facing), while minimising sounds from any other direction.

Its long, narrow shape, is similar to a shotgun barrel, giving it its name.

Shotgun Mics are commonly attached to a boom pole, becoming what is known in the industry as a boom, and used to capture audio from afar.

A lot of the audio in your favourite programmes and movies will have been recorded this way!

Video Terminology Explained – What is a Clapper?

You’ve seen it before, but do you know what it is used for?

A Clapper or Clapperboard is an essential tool used for syncing audio and video in post-production and for identifying specific shots.

It is one of the most recognisable accessories on any film set. Usually, the clapperboard has spaces to note the scene, take, and shot, along with additional details like the production title, director, and director of photography.
