Video Terminology Explained – What is a noisy shot?

Technically a shot can be audibly noisy, but if this term is used in video, it usually refers to visual noise.

Visual noise is a type of grain that appears over the top of the frame and the ‘noisier’ a shot, the more grain it has.

It is caused by inopportune camera settings, which is usually the result of a less-than-ideal shooting environment.

The most likely cause of most noise is increasing the brightness of the shot in camera to compensate for a shooting location that is too dark.

There is software that can be used while editing to decrease the level of noise within a shot, but there is always a trade off with the final quality of the shot, so it is always best to get it right in camera if you can.
