York Racecourse prize money set at a record £10.75 million
Looking ahead to the forthcoming 2023 racing season, our leading local track York has announced a record prize fund of £10.75m for its action-packed 18-day programme.
With an ongoing commitment to attract the best horses to the Knavesmire and support British racing, every race at York will now be worth at least £20,000, while all Listed races will be run for a minimum of £70,000 and all Group 3 races will be at least £85,000.
Through the support of Darley, Juddmonte, the European Breeders’ Fund and the BHA Development Fund, an additional six-figure investment has been targeted at developmental maiden and novice races to boost a dozen contests across the season to between £20,000 and £40,000.
The British EBF Ruby Jubilee Convivial and two Sky Bet-sponsored nurseries at the flagship Ebor Festival in August have been increased from £80,000 to £100,000, making them the richest developmental races of their type in British racing.
The Group 2 Sky Bet City of York Stakes will receive the biggest single boost to £500,000, making it the richest racecourse-funded Group 2 in the UK, while a £50,000 injection to the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur prize fund means all four Group 2 contests at the Ebor Festival will be worth at least £250,000.
The Group 1 Juddmonte International, last year won by the William Haggas-trained Baaeed, the world’s highest rated turf horse, will continue to have a £1m purse, with the Nunthorpe, Yorkshire Oaks and Sky Bet Ebor all continuing to have a prize fund of £500,000.
The 2023 season opens with the high profile three-day Dante Festival from Wednesday to Friday, May 17-19. Full details of all fixtures and an online ticket booking facility are at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk Robin Moule
