EARLY BIRD SIGN UP FOR ST LUKE'S THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

The celebrated Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes participants through the stunning Yorkshire scenery of the Dales National Park, a 26-mile and 12-hour route that takes in Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, a total ascent of 1,585 metres!

Now one of the most popular events in the St Luke’s Hospice annual fundraising calendar, the challenge is back for June 7 2025.

For anybody who signs up to take part before December 1, there’s an early bird sign up fee of just £25 - then rising to £40 - with participants requested to raise a minimum sponsorship of £250.

The 2024 challenge saw the St Luke’s walkers raise an incredible £17,000 towards patient care.

“Each person had a reason for taking part on the day from doing the challenge in memory of a loved one or as a challenge for themselves,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraising Manager Katie Fielding.

“It’s also a great day for corporate fundraising groups – the team from BRM raised more than £1,000!

“This challenge is not for the faint-hearted but we can promise you a great day to remember.”

PLAYGROUND TREES VANDALISED

Friends of Woodseats Playground were upset to see the damage caused to newly planted trees as part of their continued refurbishment of the playground. The trees were attacked on Wednesday 18th September. 3 of the trees being completely snapped and 2 further trees bent.

The trees were planted as part of a £70,000 refurbishment of the playground which was only completed in the summer. The funding from Veolia Environmental Trust and support by Sheffield Parks and Countryside had reduced the amount of tarmac, provided new play equipment and planting, including the vandalised trees.

David Kemp, Chair of Friends of Woodseats Playground said, "The damage to the new trees is extremely disappointing given the positive response we have had from the community following the completion of the latest step in our plans for the park."

"We have sought to make the park more inclusive for all ages and abilities and to make the space greener and more pleasant to spend longer in. Damage like this shows that some people in the community do not understand the effort and cost required to try to make things better for all."

"As a community, we will work together to replace the trees and raise awareness about how projects like this are delivered to try to prevent episodes like this in the future".

Friends of Woodseats Playground have established a Crowdfunder to seek to pay for the replacement of the trees: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/replace-the-playgrounds-vandalised-trees?tk=MTcyNjkyMjQ3OTlhMGQ4MTRiNjVkZjcyYjRhMDRkOWVkNWVkNDI5ODRiMGY3NDIyMGM%3D

If anyone has information about the vandalism, please report this to South Yorkshire Police on 101.

PLANS TO TACKLE CONGESTION ON CHESTERFIELD ROAD🚗

Local people are being invited to have their say on Sheffield City Council’s proposed changes on and around the A61 Chesterfield Road between Meadowhead and Heeley.
The measures are aimed at improving journey times for buses, tackling congestion and enhancing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.
They include extending bus lanes, relocating bus stops and improving pedestrian crossings. The subway at Meadowhead roundabout would be filled in and replaced with a controlled crossing at road level.
A public consultation on the scheme runs until 4th October.

MEADOWHEAD SIXTH FORMERS CELEBRATE

Meadowhead School’s A Level results match the very high standards set in 2023. Students and their families joined Meadowhead staff to open their results. Given the levels of pandemic-related disruption faced by these students in their younger years, it is an incredible testament to the students’ hard work and commitment, and the support and knowledge of Meadowhead’s teachers to again achieve so highly.

Around a third of entries achieved either an A* or A grade and over 60% of entries were grade B or above. 23% of students achieved the elite measure of at least AAB. Across the six BTEC subjects, the average grade was again a Distinction.

Congratulations Class of 2024!

SAD DEATH OF JIMMY CRAWFORD

Our magazine has been saddened to learn of the death of the region’s first pop music recording star.
While other Sheffield acts including Dave Berry and Joe Cocker were also around in the early 1960s, it was Jimmy Crawford who was the city’s first performer to have a hit record - ‘I Love How You Love Me’. Listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ewUrjjaxw
His haunting 1961 recording peaked at No 18 and spent ten weeks in the ‘Hit Parade’.
With his peroxide blond hair and tight leather trousers, Ronald James William Crawford Lindsay was an unmistakable character around the city and beyond.
He went on to enjoy a lengthy career in showbiz, with a string of record releases, a film appearance and also as a popular cabaret artist. In addition, he was a noted swimming champion and a talented speedway rider. In later life, he showed another talent, becoming a noted artist.
Jimmy lived most recently in Dronfield, giving him the opportunity to maintain his long-standing friendship with Dave Berry, with the two meeting up regularly to reminisce.
Jimmy, who passed away on July 24th, is survived by his son, Dean, and daughter, Sonia.

• Read John Firminger’s tribute to Jimmy Crawford in our next magazine.

NATIONAL LEAGUE TROPHY AT WOODSEATS FESTIVAL

Yesterday, Twist and Active8 magazines had the pleasure of teaming up with Chesterfield FC to showcase their Vanarama National League Championship Trophy at The Woodseats Festival.
As this year's sports-themed event, people had the opportunity to be photographed standing alongside the gleaming piece of football silverware after it was paraded through Woodseats.
More photos from the festival will be published in the next issue of Active8 magazine.
