Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts

Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts is based in Sheffield, UK and supports the local independent/DIY music scene of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

"Do It Thissen" is Yorkshire dialect for "Do It Yourself" (DIY)

It was also the name of a 9-day long exhibition/event of September 2012 as part of the University of Sheffield's "Festival of the Mind" and which was curated by Dr Matthew Cheeseman and Jon Downing

The exhibition focused on the DIY/independent music scene which flourished in Sheffield and South Yorkshire during the years 1978 - 1982

Do It Thissen Records was formed in 2018 to support the DIY/independent music scene by releasing small runs of pressed vinyl & lathe-cut singles, EPs and LPs by local artists

If you enjoyed the tracks by Wet Man which we released on DIT-075 7” lathe cut single (I Believe In Lizard Men / Take A Look At My Car), then you’ll be beside yourself to learn that these will be joined by another couple of tracks on Wet Man’s forthcoming self-released cassette tape EP / digital.

There’s a launch event in Sheffield on 15 February at Sidney & Matilda ( support is the excellent Isis Moray )

OK, so 2024 draws to a close, time to reflect on the label's year.

10 releases! Very proud of this list, quite diverse in the genres covered, I reckon: Electronic/techno, Instrumental surf guitar, Jazz/Prog, Folk, Funk, Improvised experimental vocal suite from a text score, Spoken Word, Jazz/Rock, Vaporwave, Electronic/Synth-pop. Many sold out in a day, but there are very low numbers of some releases still available (see our Bandcamp page)

DIT-064: Hekla Fell – Hex / Vax (Lathe Cut, 7", single)
DIT-065: Surf Muscle – The Surf Muscle Method (Lathe Cut, 7", Single)
DIT-067: Out Ink – Enough / The Bathtub And The Basin (Lathe Cut, 7", Single)
DIT-068: Wickerman & Fisherman – Divorced From Reality (Lathe Cut, 7”, Single)
DIT-069: Moosh – Understanding (Lathe Cut, 7", Single)
DIT-070: Lou Barnell – Line For Thurgoland (Lathe Cut, 10", EP)
DIT-071: Simon W. Green – Cosmic Cubbyhole (3×Lathe Cut, 5" Box Set)
DIT-072: Mzylkypop – No Plan C (Lathe Cut, 7”, Single)
DIT-073: Crystal Blaze – Forest People (Lathe Cut, 10", EP)
DIT-075: Wet Man – I Believe In Lizard Men (Lathe Cut, 7", Single)

The label had several mentions on the 6Music Freak Zone program, and an Out Ink track had a spin on live radio.

The Freak Zone producer invited me to record a Freak Zone playlist for Yorkshire Day (1st August). I managed to cram in 15 tracks with a Yorkshire connection into the 60 minute broadcast - including a number of releases from our back catalogue (programme still available on MixCloud - see link in comments).

Several releases are already lined up for early 2025 - thank you for your continued support, and ...

*** Another fxckxng Brexit Bonus! ***

GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) legislation comes into effect from 13 December 2024 for goods sent to the EU and Northern Ireland from UK.

In a nutshell, the process and expense required to become compliant is likely to be prohibitive as far as I can tell, and so I'm afraid I'll not be selling to EU/Northern Ireland for the foreseeable future or until a simple & inexpensive solution presents itself.

Due to come into effect on the 13 December 2024, the EU’s General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) adds obligations on UK businesses selling non-food goods intended for consumers into the EU. It will also affect businesses selling into Northern Ireland.

December's here ... so it's about time I gave out some more information about this month's releases:

DIT-071: "Cosmic Cubbyhole" by Simon W. Green. This is a 3 x 5" lathe-cut box set with 24-page colour booklet of art & lyrics.

The six tracks are each of around a minute and a half to two minutes or so of spoken word over a background of other-worldly ambient & electronic sounds. The six tracks are spread across three 5" lathe-cuts - one clear, one white, and one black. The lathe-cuts and booklet fit snugly inside a padded, custom printed matchbox style case.

This is a limited edition of 35 and is priced at £18 plus post & packing

DIT-075: "I Believe In Lizard Men"/"Take A Look At my Car" by Wet Man. This is a lizard green 7" lathe-cut record, in a proper glued pocket style outer sleeve. These tracks are a couple of favourites from Wet Man's live shows and mark his debut on vinyl.

Here's some hype from the recent past: "Wet Man merges jerky nervous energy with tales of science fiction and the stupidity of mankind via the gnarly sonics of Nag Nag Nag, Su***de and the Legendary lost, Fat Truckers". Well, what's not to like?

This is a limited edition of 40 and is priced at £12 plus post & packing.

Both releases will go up for sale at 0800 UK time on Friday 6th December in our Bandcamp shop, and the tracks will be made available to listen to but not buy, ahead of this.

I'll hold a few back and add them in to the shop at 2000 UK time on the day in case the editions sell out in the morning- thereby giving a sporting chance to non-UK and/or people on the move at 0800.

Oh, and not forgetting that each of these comes with a digital download code and a Do It Thissen "Better Lathe Than Never" coaster/beermat.

I'll post direct links to the shop later in the week

We were on Threads and Twitter (pre-X) and gave up on both pretty swiftly.

Blue Sky Social looks to be a slightly better platform than both of those, so I’m going to give it a tentative try.

So if you want tiny soundbites rather than full chapter and verse, Blue Sky is where it’ll be. FB and Insta continue as normal

Do It Thissen alumni news:

Mzylkypop are releasing a new 7" lathe-cut single in an edition of 100 via the excellent Heaven's Lathe label. Available from 1800 on Friday 15th November from the Heaven's Lathe Bandcamp page (link in comments below)

This is the label run by Graham Duff - a great friend of the label, and as it happens, a track from our recently released Moosh EP appears in the current Mixtape Radio Show which Graham produces every week. Listen here:

A brand new episode featuring a feast of fresh underground sounds. Today's tasks: finalise the artwork for December's offerings from the label:

DIT-071 - "Cosmic Cubbyhole" Boxset, comprising 3 x 5" lathe-cuts in a matchbox-style card box along with a 24-page booklet comprising original art and lyrics for the 6 tracks therein. There'll be one each of black, clear and white 5" in each box - each track is around 2 minutes long and they comprise spoken word pieces over ambient electronic backing tracks, by our new friend Cosmic Cubbyhole. If you bought DIT-052 GTFOD vs kiYOmi, you'll have a good idea of what to expect in terms of the packaging and presentation

DIT-075 - "I Believe In Lizard Men"/ "Take A Look At My Car" by Wet Man. This is a 7" lathe-cut single, cut on translucent lizard green 2mm heavyweight blanks. Two synth-based bangers which are favourites in the Wet Man live set. Wet Man (aka Jack Clayton) will be playing live dates soon, and some of this edition will be made available for gigs - but you'll get a chance to grab an early copy here next month

Clock DVA are playing a rare show in Sheffield tonight - a band I first saw playing live supporting Cabaret Voltaire, nearly 44 years ago.

The line-up of the band has changed over the years, but always with main man Adi Newton at the helm - I'm incredibly proud to have released records on the label which feature current & former DVA members:

DIT-003 Mzylkypop – Kiedy Wilki Zawyja? (Mick Somerset, Charlie Collins)
DIT-008 Mzylkypop – Mzylkypop Presents Xzyles (Adi Newton, Mick Somerset, Charlie Collins)
DIT-028 Mzylkypop – I Was A Teenage Brexit Thwarter (Mick Somerset)
DIT-029 Horse Verse – Round & (Simon Elliott-Kemp, Mick Somerset)
DIT-054 Collins/Hope/Infanti – Losing A Caravan (Charlie Collins)
DIT-055 Mzylkypop – A Blood Red Prayer EP (Mick Somerset, Charlie Collins)
DIT-072 Mzylkypop – No Plan C (Mick Somerset, Charlie Collins)
