Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts

Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts Do It Thissen Records & Lathe Cuts is based in Sheffield, UK and supports the local independent/DIY music scene of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

"Do It Thissen" is Yorkshire dialect for "Do It Yourself" (DIY)

It was also the name of a 9-day long exhibition/event of September 2012 as part of the University of Sheffield's "Festival of the Mind" and which was curated by Dr Matthew Cheeseman and Jon Downing

The exhibition focused on the DIY/independent music scene which flourished in Sheffield and South Yorkshire during the years 1978 - 1982

Do It Thissen Records was formed in 2018 to support the DIY/independent music scene by releasing small runs of pressed vinyl & lathe-cut singles, EPs and LPs by local artists

Here's some news about the second of our releases this month

DIT-070 "Line For Thurgoland" by Lou Barnell comprises around a half-hour of experimental/improvised vocal tracks based on Lou's text scores.

It's a field recording made in an actual disused railway tunnel in Thurgoland, South Yorkshire and which has massive reverb qualities!

Four tracks from the performance will be made available on a clear 10" 33rpm lathe-cut EP and a fifth track is available as part of the digital download.

The release will be available to pre-order on Friday 6th September (Bandcamp Friday) at 0900 UK time, and the orders will be sent out at the end of September to coincide with the digital launch of the release.

If you're fans of the work of Emergence Collective, then I think you'll like this release - indeed, several of the Collective feature on this recording.

The release comes with a 12-page full-colour booklet comprising art inspired by Thurgoland, and includes photos of the recording location & EP credits.

This release is priced at £16 plus p&p

There'll be a special one-off bundle on offer, comprising the original artwork for this release (created by Lou Barnell) along with a copy of the EP cut on a different coloured heavyweight 10" blank. Additionally, there'll be a single-sided 10" lathe-cut included with this bundle, containing the fifth track which will otherwise only be available on the digital download.

The artwork is an unframed A3 sized mixed media piece and is a strict one-off. This "bundle" will appear as a separate item on the Bandcamp page. (See photo in comments)

Here's something to brighten up your Monday evening: news of the first of September's releases

The lead track off DIT-073 "Forest People" EP by Crystal Blaze is now available to listen to! Pre-orders for the limited edition 10" lathe-cut EP will be available from 0900 on Friday 6th September.

The actual release date is Saturday 28th September - the day of the launch event at Delicious Clam in Sheffield.

I'm planning an edition of just 25 copies, cut on heavyweight clear 10" blanks. Not all copies will be made available on the 6th, as I'll be holding a few back to sell at the launch event of the 28th.

More news on this, and the second of September's releases, later

All done! I’ve just finished cutting the last of the edition of 25 of DIT-073 Forest People EP by Crystal Blaze. Next task: labels & sleeves.

I’ll start taking orders for this release on Friday 6th September (to capitalise on Bandcamp Friday to keep the retail price down)

Not all of the edition will be made available on this date: I’m holding a few back to sell at the launch gig of Saturday 28th September. I’ll add unsold copies and the final remaining copies of the release into the Bandcamp shop on the day following the gig.

Price will be £12 plus p&p

I’m expecting this release to sell out very quickly. As usual, reminders will be made nearer the dates that the release will appear in the Bandcamp shop

DIT-006 Smaragdus EP was released some four years ago, and if you've been enjoying their sound since then, you'll be pleased to learn that as well as a show in Wales at the end of September, they've pencilled in a Sheffield show on Sunday 15th September at The Shakespeare (6pm-9pm)

It's a Slow Wave Sound event and tickets are available now! (link in comments VVV)

Update on August's releases:

All orders placed over the last few days following on from the release of Moosh 7" lathe-cut single have now been shipped - UK orders should be arriving tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday at the latest.

The blue edition has sold out, there are four of the white edition left, and we're down to single figures on the black edition too.

The photo of me wearing the latest label T-shirt "Better lathe than never" prompted a flurry of sales - there's now only an XL in white and an XL in yellow left, so if you were contemplating a purchase - then now might be the time!

Good news on the September release front: the test cut for DIT-070 10" EP by Lou Barnell is approved, as is the test cut for DIT-073 10" EP by .

I'll be cutting these over the next few weeks, with pre-orders being taken from (Bandcamp Friday) 6th September. I'll share images of the artwork when ready.

All's well that ends well!

Last Sunday's Freak Zone on BBC 6Music contained a "Corrections and Clarifications" spot where host Stuart Maconie apologised for getting Out Ink's name wrong on air in the previous episode, and also for attributing the Hekla Fell track to DIT instead of Holy Crow Records ! To put things right, he played another Out Ink track, followed by an Isis Moray track upon Daniel's recommendation.

And it didn't hurt that SM had further kind words for the label 😉

20/05/2024

Hmm, well that was a bit of a pig's breakfast: the Freak Zone blurb promised a couple of tracks from God's Own County (Yorkshire!) - which came to pass OK: and at the top of the program, Stuart announced that a couple of Tracks from recent Do It Thissen releases would be aired.

So far, so good: except that the first of these tracks was announced as "Enough" by a band called "The Bathtub & The Basin". Great name for a band, however the band in this case is Out Ink and the title of the B side of their recent release on Do It thissen had been stated instead of their name.

Fast forward to the end of the show, and the final track is "Dasein" by Hekla Fell - wrongly attributed (to my horror) to Do It Thissen when in fact it had been released on Holy Crow Records. I had been expecting to hear a track from the recent Do It Thissen 7" release "Hex"/"Vax", download codes for which I'd sent to the Freak Zone a few weeks back; maybe they'd wanted a track of longer duration to close the show, chosen "Dasein" and not bothered to check the full release details?

Notwithstanding all this, great to hear the tracks blasting out of the radio, and a big up to the Sheffield independent music scene.

Update for those who weren't aware:

In the final week of my stint up in Orkney, I managed to slip over and crack my left hip. A&E in Kirkwall confirmed no broken bones, but on return to Sheffield and after visiting two of our fine hospitals, it turns out that I have a fractured acetabulum (hip socket).

No surgery planned - just rest & natural healing and hobbling around on crutches for a short while. I'll see how I feel at the end of May regarding firing the lathe back up.

Here's me, 3 minutes after the fall: "admiring the view" - good job there's no sound to this picture 😆
