Newly elected MP for Sheffield Central, Abtisam Mohamed, told Sheffield Live! the cost of living crisis and local transport were key concerns for Sheffielders. She also pledged to press for early implementation of Labour's manifesto commitment to recognition of a Palestinian state. Tom Hunt: Labour pleased with election results
Sheffield Council leader Tom Hunt, speaking to Sheffield Live! said Labour were pleased with the local election results with the party gaining five seats overall. Sheffield will remain with no overall control, Labour having 35 councillors out of 84 seats. The Lib Dems lost two seats overall and are down to 27. The Greens are unchanged with 14 seats. Eight councillors sit as Independents. The Tories lost their only seat, with Stocksbridge and Upper Don a Labour gain. Baillor Jalloh reports.

In a special edition of Indie Film on TV, marking two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sheffield Live! TV will be showing Larysa Kadochnikova. The War, a film by Dmytriy Tomashpolskyi.

Larysa Kadochnikova is a screen legend of Ukrainian cinema who played Marichka in Serhii Paradzhanov’s “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”. On 24 February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she refused to evacuate and stayed in Kyiv during its offensive. The film tells the story of her life in those dire times. A new reality where the past, the present, the future, memories, meditations, and dreams intertwine as the war goes on...

University centre launches new equity and inclusion scheme
The Centre for Equity & Inclusion at the University of Sheffield has launched a new programme for post-graduate researchers of minority backgrounds. The scheme offers training workshops, mental health and wellbeing support, and mentoring opportunities. Now in its second year, the research hub seeks to enhance the university experience for post-graduates of colour, while challenging racism within and beyond higher education. Man with the Pram up for Pride of Britain Award
Sheffield’s “Man with The Pram”, John Burkhill, is one of the finalists for the Pride of Britain Fundraiser Award. The announcement comes after Burkhill reached his goal earlier this year of raising £1 million for charity. Well-known in Sheffield, he is a familiar sight with an iconic green wig and pushing a pram, with a charity bucket, around the city centre streets. He hopes to win the award for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity for which he has been fundraising since the loss of his wife, who died of cancer in 1992. Chilean community mark 50th anniversary of military coup
The brutal coup d’etat in Chile on 11 September 1973 left thousands dead, many more in exile, and overthrew Salvador Allende’s democratically-elected government. Sheffield is among the cities that gave sanctuary to Chilean refugees. The Chilean community and friends held a march and rally on Saturday. Robot company opens in Sheffield

Universal Robots, the world’s largest collaborative robot company, has opened in Sheffield its first UK hub. The new hub will help UK manufacturers benefit from collaborative automation, where robotic devices work alongside human workers. The Sheffield hub will house offices and a showroom where the latest technology and applications will be demonstrated. Mental health alliance launched in Sheffield

A new alliance of mental health providers and service users has been launched to improve the health and well-being of the people of Sheffield. The Synergy mental health alliance has more than 100 members including voluntary organisations, decision makers from the local authority, GP’s, and experts by lived experience working together to improves the lives of people with mental health issues. BBC journalists walk out over local programme cuts

BBC radio journalists in Sheffield and other parts of England have been on strike with a 48 hour walk out in a dispute over cuts to local radio services. The BBC wants its 39 local stations to share more programmes as part of a plan to modernise services and reduce costs across England. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to BBC journalist Kate Linderholm.
