Scene 18 – Grancombe beach
1989
James steps onto the beach – Dan comes running from a
campfire; he is chasing a thin man
DAN
(shouts) You fu**er!
(to James) James, drop the fu**er! Don‟t let him past!
THIN MAN
Bollox!!
The thin man has a knife and plunges it into James as he runs
past him. Dan hits the man who falls over. Alex appears and
repeatedly stabs the thin man.
DAN
What the f**k have you done? What the f**k have you done?
Alex slumps back onto the sand, exhausted.
DAN
Check his pulse. Check his f**king pulse. He can‟t be. Fu***ng
tell me he‟s not. Check him.
James stumbles forward.
JAMES
What the…
DAN
What the f**k has he done? What the f**k have you done? You
saw. It wasn‟t our fault. He was gonna kill you. You saw it. It
was an accident… self-defence.
ALEX
Be quiet. Stay there. He‟s dead. (checks James for injuries)
You‟re OK. It‟s not deep. Just skin. You‟ll be fine.
DAN
I‟m scared, Alex. This is real. He‟s dead. He‟s f**king dead.
ALEX
Shut up. Let me think. I need to think.
DAN
I‟m going. I‟m outta here.
ALEX
You‟re going nowhere. Unless you want to spend the rest of
your f**king life behind bars, you‟re gonna stay put till I tell
you. (points at dead man) Pick that fu**er up and follow me.
DAN
(picks up dead man) What we gonna do?
ALEX
You‟re gonna do as you‟re told. I‟m gonna sort it.
Alex pulls a roll of notes and some cash from the dead mans
pocket.
ALEX
Thieving bastard.
Alex picks up an axe from near the fire that was used to chop
wood.
ALEX
(to James) Give me a hand. We‟re taking him up.
Scene 19 – Alan l‟Anson‟s house
1998
A phone rings in the kitchen.
JAMES
(answers) Yes?
ADAM
Hello, Mr. Sawday. Is everything in order?
JAMES
Yes, very much. There‟s just one thing. The keys you gave me.
That was all there were?
ADAM
Yes, the two sets of house and car keys. All on separate key
rings.
JAMES
You‟re sure of that?
ADAM
Positive.
JAMES
OK. Thankyou. (sets down phone)
James dials a different number.
WOMAN
(answers) Grancombe Gazette?
JAMES
Oh, hi. My name‟s James Sawday. I‟m a journalist with Kudos,
the men‟s magazine. I‟d like a word with the editor, please.
WOMAN
Right, hang on a second.
Scene 19 – A bar in Grancombe
Neville Forster, editor of Grancombe Gazette, approaches
James’ table.
NEVILLE
Mr. Sawday, I presume.
JAMES
(shakes his hand) James, please. Fancy a pint?
Cut the ordering of the drinks.
JAMES
Cheers. (clinking of pints)
NEVILLE
Rugby season. Got to keep my weight up.
JAMES
(lights a rollie) Winter. Got to keep my lungs warm. Who d‟you
play for? Grancombe?
NEVILLE
Second fifteen. Nothing too serious
JAMES
In it for the social life, yeah?
NEVILLE
Partly. Do you play?
JAMES
Not since school.
NEVILLE
Public school, huh?
JAMES
Yes. What about you?
NEVILLE
Yep. How old are you, by the way?
JAMES
Twenty-seven. Why?
NEVILLE
Just curious. I swear I almost recognise you. You been down
on holiday here before?
JAMES
No, this is my first visit.
NEVILLE
If that‟s the case, how did you know about this place?
JAMES
Oh, I erm… remembered the name from one of the articles.
NEVILLE
No, you didn‟t.
JAMES
What?
NEVILLE
Because it wasn‟t mentioned in any article. Believe me, I know;
I‟ve read them all.
JAMES
(a pause) …You got me.
NEVILLE
I know it. So, you going to tell me the truth? You don‟t have to,
but I am intrigued.
JAMES
OK, but I‟ll start my answer with a question.
NEVILLE
Shoot.
JAMES
How old are you?
NEVILLE
Twenty-nine.
JAMES
Well, that might explain why you recognise me. I spent some
time down here when I was a kid. Back in 1989. Haven‟t been
back since.
NEVILLE
The year the killer came. No wonder you know so much. How
long were you down here?
JAMES
Whole summer. I was staying with my uncle; Alan l‟Anson.
NEVILLE
Ah… I‟m sorry. About your uncle. Not nice. I wrote the
obituary. I didn‟t see you at the funeral though?
JAMES
You went?
NEVILLE
Yes. Just about the only one who bothered, it seems.
JAMES
I was abroad.
NEVILLE
You were there when they found Jack Dawes‟ body, weren‟t
you?
JAMES
(splutters into his pint) …Yes.
NEVILLE
F**k me. You and Alex Howley and Dan Thompson. Did you
stay in touch with them?
JAMES
No. We kind of fell out.
NEVILLE
Poor Dan. I was at school with him, you know. Couple of years
above. Same year as his sister, Suzie. You know her?
JAMES
She was a friend.
NEVILLE
Lovely girl. She took Dan‟s death pretty bad.
JAMES
What‟s Alex doing now?
NEVILLE
What isn’t he doing is probably a better question. Officially, he
runs a club down on South Beach: “Current”. It used to be
called “Dixie‟s”. Alex bought it a couple of years ago, did it up.
And, officially, that‟s where he gets his money from.
JAMES
And unofficially?
ALEX
That‟s what I‟d like to know. Smart car, smart house, smart
clothes. The place is a front. It‟s obvious.
JAMES
Another drink?
Scene 20 – A hotel in Grancombe
James calls Lucy.
JAMES
Hi, babe.
LUCY
James. It‟s good to hear your voice.
JAMES
It‟s only been two days.
LUCY
What‟s the hotel like?
JAMES
Nothing special. Quiet. I‟ve booked rooms for David and Becky.
LUCY
What about us? We got a double bed?
JAMES
Sure.
LUCY
Well, keep one half free for me.
JAMES
Don‟t worry. I will.
LUCY
Right answer. Ooh, gotta dash. Jane‟s just called round.
Cinema. You take care all right. And keep your hands off the
local girls. You‟re mine and don‟t you forget it.
JAMES
I won‟t.
Scene 21 – Grancombe, outside Dan‟s flat
1989
Suzie answers the door to Alex and James.
SUZIE
Oh, it‟s you.
ALEX
Good to see you, too.
SUZIE
What do you want?
ALEX
Came to see Dan, check he‟s all right.
SUZIE
Is that you, James?
JAMES
(lurking out of sight) Yeah, hi. How you doing?
ALEX
You gonna let us in now? Or we gonna stand here talking all
night?
SUZIE
He‟s resting. Doctor said he shouldn‟t be disturbed.
ALEX
Your mum said it was OK.
SUZIE
Yeah, but she‟s not a doctor.
ALEX
(pushing past Suzie) Just let us in, will you?
SUZIE
He‟s in his room.
JAMES
Thanks.
SUZIE
(to James, after Alex is out of earshot) Hanging out with Alex
and my brother now, are you?
JAMES
Yeah, they‟re all right.
SUZIE
I thought you‟d have more sense.
Inside Dan’s bedroom.
ALEX
Here. This‟ll sort you out for tonight. We‟ll be round to pick you
up tomorrow. Back to life. Back to reality. Business as usual.
DAN
Yeah. Sweet dreams.
Scene 22 – DIXIE‟S Nightclub, Grancombe
Dan arrives and spots James.
DAN
What you having?
JAMES
Stella.
DAN
Reassuringly brain-scrambling!!
JAMES
Good day‟s work?
DAN
Fifteen villages. Donbury and Rothton, too. I tell you man, I
see another f**king poster and I‟m gonna spew. Thirsty work.
Talk about earning your drink… Alex showed yet?
JAMES
No, probably still up at Eagle‟s Point.
DAN
Nah, he left there an hour ago. Must be down the council.
JAMES
How‟s it looking up the Point?
DAN
Massive. Marquee‟s up. Bar‟s stacked. Danny Peel sorted the
JCB out – dug a trench at the back.
JAMES
What for?
DAN
…?
Alex arrives.
DAN
Where‟ve you been?
ALEX
Supplies.
DAN
Everything sorted?
ALEX
Yeah, enough chemical treats on board to open a laboratory.
DAN
How about the council? All sussed?
ALEX
Yeah, they‟re eating out of my hand. Right, we gonna do this
s**t, or what? (brings out a bottle of tequila)…So, who‟s first?
JAMES
Not me. No way.
ALEX
Dan?
DAN
…!
ALEX
Well, someone‟s got to do it. Tell you what, we‟ll spin for it.
JAMES
Spin what?
ALEX
This. (puts his hand on his mobile)
Alex spins the phone. It lands, aerial pointing at James.
ALEX
Typical.
Scene 23 – Grancombe hotel reception
1998
RECEPTIONIST
I‟ve got a letter for you.
JAMES
For me? Are you sure?
RECEPTIONIST
„James Sawday‟
James rips open the letter.
SUZIE (voiceover)
Dear James, we need to talk. I‟ll be in the Surfer‟s Turf all
morning. Please come. This is real. Suzie.
Scene 24 – Surfer‟s Turf café, Grancombe
JAMES (voiceover)
Decision: make one, just one. For once in your life, let your
instinct point the way.
Hand-written sign on the door of the café reads:
‘CLOSED FOR BUSINESS’
JAMES (now inside café)
Hello?

Suzie. It‟s James. Are you here?
Suzie appears.
JAMES
I‟m sorry.
SUZIE
Don‟t be. I was wrong yesterday. It was all too quick. Seeing
you. Finding you there in the churchyard. I shouldn‟t have gone
off at you like that. I had no right.
JAMES
It was understandable. I just wish you‟d given me a chance to
explain. Will you now?
SUZIE
There‟s no need.
JAMES
Of course ---
SUZIE
No. Neville called. Neville Forster. He called me in at the „Raker
last night, said you two had been out for a drink. He said you‟d
mentioned me.
JAMES
And?
SUZIE
And he‟s a good friend. He said he trusted you. I should have
trusted you as well. I was crap, crap judging you. It was
stupid.
JAMES (sniffs the air)
Smells good. I‟ve already eaten, but I won‟t say no.
Cut to Suzie bringing James and herself some sandwiches.
SUZIE
Tuck in.
JAMES
It‟s over, then.
SUZIE
What?
JAMES
Your dream. This place. Everything it was going to be.
SUZIE
You can‟t have everything.
JAMES
I‟m sorry.
SUZIE
Look, stop saying you‟re sorry! It doesn‟t mean what it used to.
Not so important.
JAMES
How so?
SUZIE
Independence. Freedom. This place was all those things when I
was young.
JAMES
You –are- young.
SUZIE
OK, younger, then. But you grow up, you know. You look older,
you act older.
JAMES
Is that a good thing?
SUZIE
You‟ve turned out all right.
JAMES
Good.
A pause.
JAMES
You were saying. About it not meaning as much.
SUZIE
Oh, yeah. It went well for the first few years after you left. I
made some good money, kept the mortgage payments going.
The last couple of years – last summer in particular – I don‟t
know, the tide turned. Alex set the club up on North beach and
the scene moved with it. People kept coming here day time,
but nights, they were his. Times changed and I didn‟t change
with them.
JAMES
But you don‟t mind?
SUZIE
No. Not since Dan died.
JAMES
Nothing matters compared to something like that.
SUZIE
Mum doesn‟t want to be round here. Hardly leaves the flat any
more. Just prowls around, packing the boxes over and over
again. She just wants out.
JAMES (points at sandwich)
Eat, before it gets cold.
Suzie watches James.
JAMES
What?
SUZIE
Nothing. I was just looking at you, remembering…
JAMES
Remembering what?
SUZIE
How nervous you used to be of me.
JAMES
I was a kid.
SUZIE
I know. But you never realised how nervous I was of you.
James smiles awkwardly.
Scene 25 – Grancombe town
1989
Alex pulls up to James in a sporty car.
ALEX
Look at the state of you.
JAMES
My brain feels like it‟s been chewed up by someone and shat
out the other end. You got any paracetamol?
ALEX
Got something better than that.
Alex pulls out a wrap from his pocket.
JAMES
I don‟t know.
Alex hand James a rolled-up note.
ALEX
Here. Indulge yourself. It‟s no big deal. Think of it as caffeine
with a feel-good factor. Like sticking your brain in a washing
machine. Leaves you feeling squeaky clean. Bright and white.
Up for fun.
James does the line.
JAMES (voiceover)
Space dust. Sherbet. Toot.
ALEX
Welcome to the Pleasure Dome. Looking good. Feeling good?
JAMES
Feeling better.
ALEX
Five minutes from now – no mirror‟s gonna be big enough for
you. You‟re gonna be the wittiest, sexiest, smartest bastard on
the face of the earth. You‟re gonna need an agent by the time
the night‟s out, just to field the f**king calls.
JAMES
That a fact?
Alex’s car drives off.
ALEX
Lift-off. Up, up, up and away.
Scene 26 – The rave, outside Grancombe
A tall man, Arnie Oldfield, approaches Alex and James as
they hop out the car.
JAMES
Who the f**k…?
ALEX (whispering)
Arnie Oldfield. The owner. Been at the cider. Leave the talking
to me.
ARNIE
Ello, Alex.
ALEX
All right, Arnie. Like the suit. Dressed to kill. Ladies better
watch out tonight with a Romeo like you on the site.
ARNIE (accepting a cigarette from Alex)
Not one of your funny ci******es this, eh?
ALEX
Nah, nothing worse than tar and ni****ne in that.
ARNIE
Save it for later, then.
ALEX
You do that.
ARNIE (nodding to James)
Who‟s this one?
ALEX
Sorry. Forgetting my manners. This is James. Al l‟Anson‟s
nephew. He‟s down for the summer.
ARNIE (to Alex)
You got my money?
Alex produces a sealed envelope.
ALEX
All there. What we agreed.
ARNIE (checking envelope)
Just checking. Seen them films where it‟s all torn newspaper
inside. I‟m not stupid, you know.
Alex and James shuffle away.
ALEX
Too many nights sucking off cider bottles.
They find Dan near the podium.
DAN (to James)
All right, dog dick.
ALEX (to Dan)
Wide awake, or d‟you need a little kick-start?
DAN
Been there, done that. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
ALEX
Good. Need you keeping it together the next couple of hours.
DAN
DJ‟s pretty cool. All the tunes we need. Looks like it‟s kicking
off.
ALEX
Sorted already. Look at them. They f**king love it. Stay here
and keep an eye on the cash. Ride back with Lennie once
they‟re all through and stash it in your room.
DAN
Where you gonna be?
ALEX
Around.
Alex turns to James.
ALEX
You stick close. Keep your eyes peeled for Murphy and the
squad.
Later, at the bar, James meets a red-haired girl.
RED
You got anything for me?
JAMES
No. Sorry.
RED
Well, have a suck on this, then.
JAMES
Cheers.
RED
Anyone dealing round here?
JAMES
Guy called Alex. Wears shades all the time.
RED
Yeah? You give us a shout if you find him?
JAMES
Sure. Where will you be?
RED
Around. You‟ll find me.
James spots Suzie at the entrance. She approaches.
SUZIE
You‟re sweating like a pig.
JAMES
Sumo wrestler in a sauna. Comes with the territory, I guess.

What?
SUZIE
You OK?
JAMES
Sure.
SUZIE
You look wasted: like you‟ve been on coke.
JAMES
No. Totally straight.
SUZIE
Really?
JAMES
I‟m clean. Apart from the beer.
SUZE
I‟ll take your word for it.
JAMES
You don‟t believe me, do you?
SUZIE
Seen you around with Alex and Dan a lot recently. Like you
say, “goes with the territory”.
JAMES
And you disapprove?
SUZIE
I disapprove.
JAMES
You‟ll have to tell me about it some time.
SUZIE
Yeah, maybe I will.
JAMES
Anyway, back to the beers. Can I get you something?
SUZIE
No, it‟s all right. I‟m getting a round in.
JAMES
OK

(gesturing to the beers Suzie’s carrying)
You OK with those?
SUZIE
I‟m fine.
Suzie moves off into the crowd. Alex materialises at James’
side.
ALEX
Where the f**k have you been?
JAMES
Nowhere. The bar. Just getting served.
ALEX
Come on. We‟ve got work to do.
Alex starts dealing in the corner of the tent. Redhead is back.
RED
Hello again.
JAMES
He‟s there. Alex. He‟s got what you want.
RED
You gonna introduce me?
They approach Alex.
ALEX
What‟s your flavour?
RED
(whispers something)
ALEX
Enjoy.
RED (to James)
You want in?
JAMES
I… -
RED
Open wide.
ALEX
He‟s already sorted.
RED
Whatever.
Red moves away.
ALEX
You were gonna swallow it, weren‟t you?
JAMES
I don‟t know.
ALEX
Yeah, you do.
JAMES
It still scares me.
ALEX
But you were gonna do it, anyhow. Temptation‟s getting the
better of you.
JAMES
Yeah. I guess so.
ALEX
Knew you‟d come round to it in the the end. Only a matter of
time. Let‟s take a break. Return trip to heaven.
Alex and James take a cigarette break outside.
ALEX
Medication time. (drops a pill) Reality cure.
JAMES
It‟s safe, yeah? All those stories… You sure it‟s safe?
ALEX
It‟s OK. I‟m gonna be here. I‟ll ride you out. No bad trips. I‟ll
take you through and out the other side. You‟re gonna love it.
Believe me. You‟re not gonna want to come back.
JAMES
OK (sips from his drink) Just don‟t leave me, all right. Not till
I‟m coping.
ALEX
I‟m your guide. I won‟t leave you till you‟re there. Howley
Holidays Ltd. Come fly with me. Take the trip of a lifetime.
James swallows a pill.
JAMES (voiceover)
Time ticked by. Then rush. These people were friends, wrapped
round me like skin.
ALEX
You up?
JAMES
Yeah. This is good, Alex. This is so…
ALEX
Beautiful.
JAMES
Thanks.
ALEX
You got the sensitivity yet? You got the love?
JAMES
I got the love. For all these people. I f**king love them all.
ALEX
Wanna put them all in your pocket and take them home.
JAMES
Yeah. All of them. Boys and girls. I don‟t care. You know what
this is?
ALEX
No, tell me.
JAMES
Making love to the world.
ALEX
Yeah, marrying the world. Living with it forever. Come here.
JAMES
Feels good.
ALEX
Yeah, but d‟you know what‟s best?
JAMES
What?
ALEX
It‟s gonna get even better.
JAMES (voiceover)
And it did. Quicksilver. Love Alex. Love Suzie. Love everyone.
Don‟t ever want this to end.
Much later. Someone is shouting.
VOICES OF THE CROWD
What‟s going on? --- Oh, Jesus.
Call an ambulance. She‟s ---
Redhead has died.
Scene 27 – outside Grancombe hotel
1998
David, Becky and Lucy have arrived.
JAMES
Hi.
LUCY
Hello babe.
JAMES
So you guys finally made it. Getting country fear yet? Paranoid
about the lack of traffic and shops and people?
BECKY
I can do country. You just watch. I‟ve got walking boots and
jackets and jumpers. My lungs aren‟t going to know what‟s hit
them. (lights a cigarette) It‟s the healthy life for me from now
on.
DAVID
Beer. No. Six hours of driving and crappy local radio stations.
Tape jammed in the machine. I need my sanity restored.
BECKY
I want to see my room.
JAMES
I‟ve booked you a couple of singles. That OK? What? Well?
Becky nudges David.
BECKY
Are you going to tell him, or shall I?
DAVID
Ummm. Well, it‟s like… You going to help me out here, or
what?
BECKY
Typical bloke.
Becky slips David’s arm around her waist.
JAMES
You‟re kidding?
DAVID
Er, no.
JAMES
Details, please.
LUCY
He asked her out for dinner.
JAMES
What, as in a date?
BECKY
He rang me up and told me he was bored and hungry and
asked me to keep him company.
JAMES
Last of the great romantics, huh?
DAVID
And we went out and ate and got drunk and got a cab and
went back to Becky‟s and carried on getting drunk and…
BECKY
…And the rest is history.
DAVID
So, what do you think?
JAMES
What do I think? What a question. I think it‟s about f**king
time, that‟s what I think.
Scene 28 – James‟ and Lucy‟s hotel room, Grancombe
LUCY
James?
JAMES
What?
LUCY
Come here a minute.
James walks through to the bathroom.
LUCY
D‟you fancy getting in?
JAMES (voiceover)
Tell her. Tell her now. There‟s just the two of you. Spit it out.
LUCY
Well?
JAMES
I don‟t think…
LUCY
What? James? Are you OK?
JAMES
I‟m fine. Just a bit tired.
LUCY
You sure you don‟t want to get in? It‟ll do you good, help you
relax.
JAMES
No. I‟m going to get some fresh air. Clear my head. Been
staring at that screen for too long.
LUCY
OK, babe. How long you going to be?
JAMES
I don‟t know. An hour. No more. I‟ll go down by the sea. You
finish off in here and then we‟ll go and get your photos sorted
out.
Scene 29 – Current nightclub, Grancombe
A bar stewardess opens the door (Katie)
KATIE
We don‟t open till seven.
JAMES
I know.
KATIE
So how come you‟re here?
JAMES
I‟m a friend of Alex‟s.
KATIE
No, you‟re not. You‟re lying.
JAMES
Yeah? You sound very sure of yourself.
KATIE
I‟ve never seen you before.
JAMES
So?
KATIE
So, I‟m Alex‟s girlfriend and, if you were a friend of his, I‟d
know.
JAMES
I‟m an old friend. I‟ve been away for a while.
KATIE
How long?
JAMES
Nearly ten years.
KATIE
Sounds like a pretty s**t friendship to me. He expecting you?
JAMES
No, I‟m just passing through. Thought I‟d look him up.
KATIE
Who told you where to find him?
JAMES
I asked in the pub. The Moonraker.
KATIE
What did they say?
JAMES
That he owned this place, might be here.
KATIE
They don‟t like him much in there. (motions to her lit cigarette)
D‟you mind?
JAMES
(grinding the cigarette out with the toe of his foot) No problem.
KATIE
He‟s not around at the moment. Back in about an hour. You
wanna wait?
JAMES
Thanks. That would be good. I‟m Jimmy, by the way.
KATIE
T, as in Ka-Tie
They step inside.
KATIE
What‟s your drink?
JAMES
Whatever‟s easy.
KATIE
Everything‟s easy.
JAMES
Vodka.
KATIE
I‟m beginning to like you. You can tell a lot by what a person
drinks.
JAMES
Yeah? And what can you tell about me?
KATIE
That you‟re nervous. That you don‟t want to look like a wimp.
That if I told you to match me shot for shot, you‟d do just that.
Because you want to stay here. Because there‟s stuff you want
to know.
JAMES
That‟s a lot to tell. You ever thought of going into the fortune
telling business?
KATIE
Nah, that stuff‟s for wankers. Losers who need someone to tell
them how to live their lives.
JAMES
Not like you, then/
KATIE
Not like me at all.
JAMES
So tell me, how long have you been seeing Alex?
KATIE
Eight… nine months.
JAMES
You from Grancombe?
KATIE
Are you kidding me? What – do I look like some country
bumpkin?
JAMES
No, you don‟t.
KATIE
I‟m from Essex. Came down here on holiday. Met Alex in here.
JAMES
So you stayed?
KATIE
Yeah. And what about you? How d‟you know him?
JAMES
I used to live here.
KATIE
You don‟t sound like it.
JAMES
It was just for a year. After I left school. A relative of mine
lived here.
KATIE
What was he like?
JAMES
Who?
KATIE
Alex. I don‟t give a f**k about your relatives.
JAMES
He was a great guy. The best.
KATIE
You want some Charlie?
JAMES
No.
KATIE
D‟you mind if I do?
JAMES
No. Go ahead.
Katie does some lines.
KATIE
That‟s better. I get tired, you know?
JAMES
Has Alex got you working here?
KATIE
Yeah, I work bar. But not for much longer, right. Alex reckons…
JAMES
You must have known Dan, then. Dan Thompson? He used to
work here for Alex, too, didn‟t he?
KATIE
You knew Dan as well?
JAMES
Oh, yeah. Me, Alex and Dan were thick as thieves when we
were kids.
KATIE
Right little gang of criminals, I bet.
JAMES
Yeah, that‟s about the sum of it. I heard they fell out after ---
KATIE
Understatement. They hated each other. I‟m sorry, you guys
being friends and all that when you were younger, but it‟s true.
Alex fired him. A bit before he got wasted up in the woods. Cut
his wages and told him he didn‟t want him round here no more.
Not much of a loss to the business, it has to be said. I never
quite worked out what he did, anyhow. Hired muscle, I
suppose. Can I trust you, yeah?
JAMES
Of course.
KATIE
I mean with Alex? If I tell you something, d‟you promise not to
tell him? It‟s no big deal, but I need to know it won‟t go any
further. Alex gets funny about stuff like that.
JAMES
Stuff like what?
KATIE
Disagreeing with him. You see, I liked Dan. I thought he was
all right. A giggle, yeah? OK, so he did too much gear, but it‟s
not exactly the end of the world, is it?
JAMES
No.
KATIE
And he helped Alex set this place up. Once told me it was his
money as much as Alex‟s that paid for the site. Only it all
somehow ended up in Alex‟s name… I don‟t know… Alex
explained it to me once, but it was kind of complicated.
JAMES
How did Dan take it – when he got fired?
KATIE
I dunno really. It was weird. He didn‟t seem to care. Probably
too high. Just didn‟t give a f**k. And that‟s what pi**ed Alex
off. Dan didn‟t show him any respect, just kept on coming back
here, even after Alex had told him to stay away. And that was
weird as well…
JAMES
Maybe Alex still felt something for him, despite what he said.
KATIE
Maybe.
JAMES (checking his watch)
Listen, thanks for the drink and the chat, but I‟ve just
remembered something I‟ve got to do.
KATIE
What about Alex? I thought you wanted to see him.
JAMES
I‟ll call back.
KATIE
And it‟s Jimmy, yeah?
JAMES
Yeah.
KATIE
Jimmy what?
JAMES
Cricket.
KATIE
You‟re joking?
JAMES
No. My parents – weird sense of humour.
Katie lets James out. Alex appears in his car.
ALEX
What the f**k are you doing here? … You gone deaf, or what? I
said what the f**k are you doing here?
JAMES
Just looking around.
ALEX (to Katie)
You been talking to him?
KATIE
Well, yeah… He said he was a friend of yours, so we…
What? What is it, Alex? What have I done?
ALEX
He‟s a journalist, you stupid bitch. Doing a piece on Dan
getting killed. You been telling him about Dan working here?
You been doing that, you dozy f**king tart?
KATIE
Sorry. Alex, I didn‟t mean…
ALEX
Get the f**k out of my sight.
(turns to James) And you --- you just keep your f**king nose
out of it, all right? You bring me and my club any bad publicity
and…
(makes a finger-gun motion to James’ head and fires)
Got it?
I don‟t make threats, t**t. Just promises. And you know I keep
them. And you better remember that.
Scene 30 – A bench outside St. Donal‟s church, Grancombe
James sits while Lucy inspects the graveyard. Suzie appears
round the corner carrying a box of flower bulbs.
SUZIE
Hello, again.
JAMES
Hi.
SUZIE
That her, then? Your girlfriend?
JAMES
Yeah.
SUZIE
She‟s pretty.
JAMES
Yes, she is.
SUZIE
That‟s Dan‟s gravestone.
JAMES
I know. I‟m sorry. Do you want me to tell her to stop?
SUZIE
No, it‟s all right. Just doing her job.
Lucy waves.
SUZIE
Does she know you used to live here?
JAMES
No one knows. None of my friends. I‟d like to keep it that way.
Everything that happened here that summer. Dawes. The girl
at the rave. I‟ve never told anyone.
SUZIE
Maybe I‟d better go then…
JAMES
Yeah, maybe you had.
Suzie makes to leave. James grabs her arm.
JAMES
I want to see you. Tomorrow. I want to see you tomorrow.
SUZIE
What about her?
JAMES
She won‟t be here.
SUZIE
And that makes it all right, does it?
JAMES
I mean I‟m going to ask her to leave. I‟m going to tell her it‟s
over.
SUZIE
Because of me?
JAMES
Yes.
SUZIE
But nothing‟s happened.
JAMES
It has to me.
SUZIE
Nothing might happen. James, we hardly know each other any
more.
Lucy approaches.
JAMES
Will you meet me?
SUZIE
Yes.
Suzie walks away.
LUCY
Who‟s that?
JAMES
A local. I was just asking her a few questions.
LUCY
Find out anything useful?
JAMES
I hope so.
Scene 31 – Surfer‟s Turf café, Grancombe
1989
SUZIE
Hi. Time sure flies when you‟re having fun.
JAMES
Finish off. Don‟t mind me, I‟ll go and fix us a coffee. Milk,
sugar?
SUZIE
No and no. Thanks.
A few minutes later.
JAMES
Cheers.
SUZIE
Well, I finally did it. Been putting it off for weeks. I should feel
pleased.
JAMES
But you‟re not, right?
SUZIE
No, I knew this summer was going to be make or break and
now I know the result.
JAMES
Break?
SUZIE
You got it. Now you tell me about you and Alex and my
brother. Tell me all about that.
JAMES
Well, where to begin? Not the beginning. I think you already
know about that. You saw me hanging out with them. You‟ve
probably got a pretty good idea what we were spending our
time doing. So, I might as well start with the end. I might as
well tell you why I‟m not hanging around with them anymore…
SUZIE
Well…
JAMES
It was the girl. Up at Eagle‟s Point. The girl who died. She
changed everything. We were there when it happened. And if
we hadn‟t fixed the rave up, then she‟d still be alive.
SUZIE
You can‟t blame yourself for what happened.
JAMES
I don‟t accept that. They deal. Both of them. I don‟t ever want
to have to cope with that kind of guilt.
SUZIE
You don‟t have to.
Suzie approaches James and they kiss passionately.
Scene 32 – Outside Grancombe hotel
1998
Lucy is in tears.
DAVID
You‟re a f**king prick! You know that, don‟t you? I thought you
were happy.
JAMES
I thought I was, too.
DAVID
So what‟s happened?
James rushes off, starting to run.
DAVID (shouting)
James!!! She loves you. I mean –loves- you. For real!!!
Scene 33 – Alan l‟Anson‟s house
James enters the dead quiet house and looks around for a long
while. The electricity is off.
Upon entering the cellar, Alex attacks James and the have a
dualistic ‘fight to the death’
This scene is improvised.
Alex is killed by James.
Scene 34 – The Surfer‟s Turf, Grancombe
Suzie is listening to the local radio station.
RADIO PRESENTER
„And the inhabitants of Grancombe had been right to think that
the slaughter would continue. This morning, at twelve-fifteen,
two days after his BMW was sighted in a nearby car park – and
only two hours after a warrant had been issued for his arrest in
connection with the discovery of a huge drugs cache whose
whereabouts was revealed by an anonymous source – the body
of Alex Howley was found barely yards from where Jack Dawes
was discovered a decade ago. As with Dawes and the victims
that have come between, the signature of the killer was the
same: a mutilated co**se, with the hands brutally severed by
the blows of an axe. And, as with the other victims, the hands
have yet to be found.‟
Scene 35 – Grancombe South Beach
James sits down on the sand.
JAMES (voiceover)
„Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm:
for love is strong as death; jealously is cruel as the grave.‟
