How fortunate we were to have Niamh Parsons and Graham Dunne as our guests at the Everyman Folk Club yesterday. We were transfixed by a fine selection of material, mostly from Niamh’s Irish traditional repertoire, and each with a poignant and engaging introduction. Niamh’s soul-stirring singing was seductive, elevated and intensified by Graham’s beautifully crafted guitar accompaniments. We had an unexpected treat, too, when Graham accompanied himself singing a lullaby in Irish. One highlight of the night was Niamh’s favourite song, The Flower Of Magherally O, and it’s safe to say, “with admiration I [we] did gaze upon that … Lassie O”.

The evening included excellent floor spots from Graham Schofield; Dave Tricker; Bill Johnston & Sheila Darling; John Robinson; trio Barbara Wibbelmann, Catherine Ott & Gerd Wagner (making their first appearance at the Everyman); and our entertaining MC for the night, Charlie Haylock. Brava tutti!

Thanks to everyone in our splendid audience for all your support this year, for making guests and visitors to the club most welcome, and for your remarkable singing and participation. We wish you all a very happy Christmas, and look forward to seeing you in the new year when mother and daughter – Cathy Barclay & Sarah Yarwood – join us on Friday 31 January 2025.

🎶 An unmissable opportunity to catch one of Ireland’s truly great singers and songstresses on Friday, 29 November 2024. Niamh is an outstanding interpreter of traditional and contemporary songs, described by the legendary Archie Fisher as “a once or twice in a generation singer”. Graham is an acclaimed virtuoso guitarist with a vast repertoire. When not accompanying Niamh he does solo guitar folk and jazz gigs.

"A singer with a voice to die for, it is unmistakable in its velvety rich, crystal clear and sensuously warm hues." - Living Tradition

Inordinately fine singing from Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman at the Everyman Folk Club last night. This delectable duo upheld the tradition with a combination of contemporary and traditional songs collected from the UK and across the pond, interspersed with their self-penned repertoire. Anni had us enchanted as she entwined beguiling harmonies around Dave’s rich voice, and their absolute delight in sharing their music was infectious. An outstanding evening of close harmony singing, enhanced by Anni’s solo interpretations of songs from the North East of England.

Many thanks to our splendid floor performers for their part in the evening’s entertainment – Teresa Booth, Chris Serritiello & Louisa Hamelmann (The Woolverstones), Gemma Khawaja & Robin Gillan, Tracey Wisdom, and Stephen Atkinson - and to Charlie Haylock for being a tremendous MC.

Our amazing audience excelled themselves with grand and impressive singing throughout the night. You were truly superb … of course! Thank you all for making the evening such a joyous occasion. We’ll see you next month, when Niamh Parsons & Graham Dunne join us on Friday 29 November 2024 – a rare opportunity to hear one of Ireland’s most acclaimed singers.

An energetic and sparkling performance by our remarkable guest, Dan Walsh, at the first night of the Everyman Folk Club’s new season yesterday. Beautiful and moving songs were well balanced with mesmerising tunes, exhibiting the beauty of Dan’s slow and thoughtful playing as well as his dexterous and stunning clawhammer banjo style. Dan is a first class songwriter and guitarist as well as a masterful banjo player, and we enjoyed the perfect mix of self-penned compositions with those of others. Despite seeing it with our own eyes, quite how this magnificent musician makes his banjo sound like an Irish harp, an Indian sitar in Lydian mode, a jazzy double bass, and a range of percussion instruments – at times, simultaneously - remains a mystery!

Shirley Harry was our excellent MC this evening, and she was also one of our superb floor performers, together with Val & Simon Haines, Jane Bromley & Peter Reeves, Terence Blacker, and Mary-Jane & Keith Tyrell. Thank you all for your marvellous music.

Many thanks to our terrific audience too – it was a joy to see and to hear you again after the summer break. See you next time, when Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman make their long-awaited return to the Everyman on Friday 25 October 2024.

We are so very sad that lovely Crawford Mair has died, and are sure you will join us in sending sincere condolences to his children, Karen and Michael, and the extended family.

An exceptional musician, Crawford was a dedicated and loyal Member of the Everyman. The relaunch of the club 28-years ago was greatly assisted by his and Karen's generosity in persuading their band, Nothing Sacred, to perform at our initial fundraising ceilidh for no fee.

Crawford's continual friendship, enthusiasm, and support has always been very much appreciated by us both, and we know he will be much missed by all of us who had the pleasure to know him.

If you would like to attend the funeral celebration of Crawford's life in person or online - and/or wish to make a donation to Samaritans or Stroke Association in his honour - we are happy to provide full details via Messenger or email.

Forever remembered 🖤

A joyful and uplifting evening enjoying the incredible musical talents of our guest, Paul Downes, at the Everyman Folk Club last night. Paul has been a frequent performer at the club – visiting previously with Maggie Boyle, Mick Ryan, and Crows - and we all welcomed the opportunity to hear this consummately skilled craftsman perform solo.

Paul gave us an impressive selection of songs and tunes in a variety of styles, telling serious and frivolous stories in a perfect balance of traditional, contemporary, and self-penned songs. His strong, rich voice was never overshadowed by his dazzling and impeccable accompaniments on both guitar and banjo, and his atmospheric arrangements of tunes were stunningly beautiful and meticulous. The pairing of Paul’s own tune, The Streams of Bawdeen, with 17th century Irish tune, Tabhair dom do Lámh was inspired – and his rendition of Cyril Tawny’s The Oggie Man was exceptional. Each song was introduced with a combination of wisdom and wit, and Paul’s sense of fun led to an immediate rapport with everyone in the room.

Great floors spots from Steve Danby (our MC for the evening), Ruth Gitsham (first time performing), Terence Blacker, Sammy Holland, Philip Lyons, and Bill Johnston & Sheila Darling, with the inclusion of some wonderful self-penned songs and poems. Bravi!

So ends another terrific season at the club and, as ever, we wish to give sincere thanks to all our amazing Members for incredible support, awesome chorus singing, superb floor spots, and overwhelming enthusiasm. We hope everyone has a glorious Summer, and we look forward to seeing you again on Friday 27 September 2024 when we’re delighted to welcome Dan Walsh to the Everyman.

🎶 We're delighted to welcome superb singer, and an outstanding writer and interpreter of songs - Paul Downes - as our guest at the Everyman Folk Club this Friday, 31 May 2024.

Paul is a fabulous instrumentalist and singer, whose sensitive yet fun approach to his live performances puts him among the most respected artists on the British acoustic music scene today. One of the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world, Paul is multi-talented and fantastically entertaining, and exhibits exemplary musicianship.

Paul has a rich musical background that has progressed through working with Phil Beer, The Arizona Smoke R***e, Pete Seeger, and The Joyce Gang. Many Everyman regulars know Paul through his previous visits to the club - with Maggie Boyle, Mick Ryan, and Crows - and we can't wait to enjoy a stunning solo performance for our last event of this season.

"Wonderful... Magnificent throughout." - Melody Maker

"Always an incisive guitarist and, over time, has developed a smoothness and depth in his singing voice together with estimable songwriting skills." - Folk Roots

A terrific evening at the Everyman Folk Club last night with our charismatic guests, Donnelly and South. This energetic duo treated us to an evening of self-penned songs and sensitive ballads, each with intricate and melodic accompaniments on Keith’s guitars, and Lauren’s violin, shruti box, and tenor guitar. Their accomplished musicianship was evident throughout, and we were enthralled by the selection of Lauren’s beautiful tunes too. Keith and Lauren’s introductions were peppered with wit and laughter, and great fun was had by all.

We were also entertained with songs and monologues from our enjoyable floor performers - Dave Tricker, Louise Forster (first appearance at the Everyman), Robin Pooley, Stephen Atkinson, and Charlie Haylock. Thank you very much.

As always, our incredible audience responded wholeheartedly to every opportunity to sing. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and, of course, your support. See you next time for the last club night of this season – Friday 31 May 24 with Crows: Mick Ryan, Dave Bordewey, Paul Downes, and Pete Harris.
