Meet the Traders
2. Marion McSherry
Maz moved to Salford 16 years ago and started working for Barnados, managing a charity shop. She then went on to open her own shop, in Atherton, 2 1/2 years ago, raising money first for Papyrus and later for SOBS (Survivors Of Bereavement by Suicide).in April she moved the business to Bolton Rd.where she is going from strength to strength. The shop is called ‘Remembering Rosie’ in honour of the 14 year old daughter of a close friend who took her own life. The shop is an Aladdin’s cave, stocking everything from babies’ toys to bestsellers, fashion to furniture. She is open from 9.00-4.00 Monday to Friday and 10.00-3.00 on Saturday. Drop in for a browse or bring in the clothes you have grown out of or the knickknacks you are bored with. As she says “Donate don’t dump”.

Meet the Traders
1. Willem Kruger
Will came to this country from South Africa in 2005. He opened his first cafe 3 years ago in Swinton, moving his business to the Red Rose on Bolton Rd last September. Opening from 8.00-1.00 from Tuesday to Sunday, the cafe offers freshly prepared hot and cold food. In July he took over the Mayfair Newsagency next door which is open from 6.00-6.00 Monday to Friday and 6.00-2.00 on Saturdays and Sundays stocking newspapers, lottery tickets and a wide range of groceries. Not busy enough, Will also works at Asha’s restaurant in Manchester, serving wine to celebrities and the well heeled of Manchester.

Thanks to the traders who have pledged money for the Christmas Lights Appeal. Their contribution now tops £150 with more to come. Hopefully the residents of the Height will follow their lead and help to make this happen.

The Height Traders Association will be holding its next meeting tonight at 6.30 in the Red Rose Cafe. Come along if you'd like to support the work we are doing.
Items on the agenda include the launch of an appeal to fund Christmas Lights along the Bolton Rd shops and a renewed attempt to get the council to discuss the issue of parking along Bolton Rd.

The Height Traders Association now has 22 members and already can report its first successes:
* The drains at the Doveleys Rd end of Bolton Rd have now been cleaned out for the first time in many moons.
* Your Housing, the local housing association, are exploring the possibility of using the land behind the Red Lion as a car park.
* Aldi have agreed to a public bench going outside their store to help people waiting for taxis.
* They are also considering allowing the Association to use the notice board outside Height Carpets for community notices.

The Height Traders Association held their first committee meeting last night and agreed that their initial priorities would be (1) to seek to improve parking along Bolton Rd., (2) to explore ways of funding a community notice board for Irlam Square.
So far 13 businesses have signed up as members and our membership is steadily growing.
The committee will be meeting monthly and are happy to receive suggestions from traders and the public on ways we can improve the experience of local businesses and their customers.
