šŸšØ2020ProTour - Tour Experience Result šŸšØ

Well yesterday was a tough one at the magnificent

With blustering winds and a rainy front 9 it was certainly a battle.

I mustered 33pts which at best could have been maybe 4pts better, based on two easy putts missed and a blob on the 7th.

The plan was to vlog the round for a new series, thanks to Manchester GC giving me permission to film, but due to the weather I couldnā€™t take the risk getting the camera equipment wet.

Typically the weather improved on the back 9 dried up. But I made the right call I feel.
The series will start soon.

Thanks as ever, to an incredibly well run event by .tour and to Manchester Golf Club for hosting us and producing a great course that played tough but fair.

šŸšØAugust Medal ResultšŸšØ

Well Iā€™ll take 10th spot, 0.6 reduction in hcp (back to 7.2), one of my best F.I.R to G.I.R ration of the year, with no double bogeys and no 3 putts!

And thatā€™s only the second round after seeing at

I played so free on the front 9, but my head got in my way, thinking too much on technique on the back 9 after a HORRENDOUS fat on the 11th Par 3.

However, I may have had no 3 putts but I left so many short of the hole from between 6-25ft. Personally I think it was just tension in not wanting to 3 putt due to a decent round and with me getting fused to using the Backstryke D.A.R.T again, as the incert is so soft.

What pleases me, is I know thereā€™s more in the tank, and once I feel a little more comfortable with the changes Iā€™ve made with grip and in starting the transition, if the putting holds up, it could be an exciting end to the season.

šŸšØATSG ShowdownšŸšØ

Not the result Iā€™d hoped for in the .tour .golf Showdown, after a great practice round on Thursday.

Despite playing fairly well tee to green, with only a few mishaps due to zero confidence in my swing currently, my putting was absent - in fact it had gone AWOL.

30pts with 3 blobs is disappointing! The first of which, which typified how the round would pan out on the greens, came at the 2nd hole whereby I managed to 4 putt from 17ft.
I just couldnā€™t get to grips with the speed of the greens all day, or in fact the breaks which appeared to be massive in some circumstances. Greens looked faster than they were, and thatā€™s not to say they were slow. Just a really poor day with the flat stick.

The course from the tee to the green played firm and fast, and with my ball flight and lack of distance, I had to pitch most things short, allow the land to take the ball. Sadly this resulted in much more missed greens than I wanted.

With just 30pts, the three blobs proved really costly as I was hoping for 36pts around there, which was achievable I felt.
This also means Iā€™m still behind Marc Brookes in the OOM with events running out. Still, Iā€™ve always been one to do things ā€˜last minuteā€™ minute, so all to play for.

thank you so much for presenting a stunning course. Until I played Thursday I didnā€™t know Meltham GC existed and rest assured Iā€™ll be here more often now.

I love how the course isnā€™t for bombers and you gotta play strategically; especially off the tee. 12,13, 14 are just a delight to play!

Folks, if youā€™re reading this far, put Meltham GC in your list.

Thanks to my playing partners , and of course my good pal for their company and competition!

Next up on .tour is for me the best testing golf course in the Manchester region - the simply stunning on 27 Aug

For those who are 1-28hcp, places are still available for the Tour Experience section (Male & Female all okay together) and at just Ā£55 itā€™s great value to play such a good course.

2020protour The Lakes Pro/Am Day 2 - Windermere Golf Club

Second place over all, for the combined event with Nick McCarthy - WHAT A PLAYER!!!!!!

Elated, gutted and embarrassed all at the same time!
Thatā€™s the best way I can sum yesterday and the event as a whole from a personal playing perspective.

Windermere was presented beautifully, and with gorgeous views from the high points. But it just didnā€™t find my eye.

Sadly my game remained where it finished off on Sunday - AWOL!!!! Literally only one shot all day that felt good and thatā€™s the once confirmed by Arccos Golf which you can see.
I opened my last dozen ā€œRob Potter Golfā€ Vice Golf Pro Plus golf balls prior to the round and lost 6!!!!
Thatā€™s four and a half dozen golf balls lost since my knock with The Fore Right Boys over in Ireland in March!

I couldnā€™t find my swing at all! With straight pulls or pushes off the tee with driver; fats off the tee with fairway woods and my hybrid; irons were an amalgamation of the driver, fairways woods and hybrids šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ not to mention an inability to putt once again.

I got on the card just 4 times yesterday! So this 2nd place is more down to Nick rather than me, as I only really attended for 12 holes of the 36 played this week.

His patience with me was exceptional based on how poorly I played.

Great to get out Jack Brooks 10yr after our last knock and his dad! What a pairing they are, with his dad still off 3hcp well into his 60ā€™s.

Lets put it this way - I was that gutted with my performance I drive to HUKD GOLF on my way back, to confirm what I believed the problem was and see if I could put a plaster over it, based on the videos Iā€™ve took with Joanne over previous lessons. Seemed to feel a bit better but sheā€™s gonna take a look prior to the Meltham GC event next up on the tour.

šŸšØCaptains 4th QualifieršŸšØ

What could have been sort of a round!

A stupid clubbing decision on the 6th because, I didnā€™t wanna go through back, resulting in me under clubbing, going at the shot harder and coz I didnā€™t trust it, fatting it into the pond short, resulting in a double.
Made up with the bounce back birdie on 7 though.

And then, inexplicably, on the 15th, the easiest hole for me personally on the course, I make a triple as I pulled my 3rd shot left of the green (had to chip out coz of a blocked drive) and then a skulled chip and a half hearted return chip stopped all momentum!

I was cruising as well and felt pretty comfortable with my game all day, and scrambled well based on my Arccos Golf stats, even if the flat-stick wasnā€™t as well behaved as it had been.

Ah well, no foul regarding the hcp as it was a free round Saturday. However the next to hcp qualifiers see two counting rounds drop. So I need to try be a little more in point this week.

Feels good to have a Top 5 - itā€™s been a while šŸ˜‚

Yesterday actually felt like I played the golf I know I can, and thatā€™s with a birdie putt on the 1st, which a cricket umpire would declare a wide, a silly double on the 2nd after a tentative first putt and a poor first chip on the 12th.

But I have to remember Iā€™m the hcp I am for a reason and technical blips will slip in. I kept my cool, regrouped and scrambled well all things considered.

Second round Knock Out match tonight in the 4balls and then Captains Qualifier on Saturday. So Iā€™m looking forward to those after feeling more comfortable knowing the greens.

There are still spots available for this fantastic charity event on Sat 15th June.

Currently in last group out at 13:00 and thereā€™s 3 spots at that tee time still available.

Ā£40 to play with food and then entertainment by ā€œThe Usual Suspectsā€ is a genuine bargain. And the charity we are playing for is such a worthy cause, to help provide trained dogs for children with Autism.

Premier Inn nearby so if you wanna stay over and have drinks to really enjoy the entertainment and auction, then thereā€™s that option as well.

Iā€™d love 3 more people to join me so Iā€™d have a team to enter that side of the event also, as well as competing individually.

You know youā€™re playing the most inconsistent and worst golf of your amateur life (I canā€™t call it a career EVER) when .golf gives up on your scorecard, once transferred the scoreā€™s over.

In that I mean just an (*) for my score on 18 (I picked up after my tee shot so should be a nett double bogey 7) and then the gross total is just recorded as a (*).

In essence, as per it would have been a Gross 101 adjusted by the nett doubles (of which there was many!

was both beautiful and brutal all at the same time on the .tour yesterday. What a fantastic challenge and a simply beautiful course! I truly cannot believe it was only opened in 1995!

Considering the weather and some courses still struggling underfoot, Waterton Park played like an inland links yesterday, especially with the wind! Firm fairways and electric greens!

And 17pts is, I think, my worst return in a Stableford Comp.

Huge congrats to my good pals for the tied win in the Pro Comp and in the Tour Experience section.

Glad Iā€™ve a few weeks off before I play on the Tour again, as a lot of work needed mentally (just struggling in general regardless of golf) and figure out whatā€™s happening with my swing. Some huge casting happening in transition which caused a couple of massive high slices off the tee matched with some unbelievably bad blocks right with approach irons.

But I was happy with the game plan following a lengthy chat with and shot selections I made yesterday were pretty much spot on bar one or two. Just poor ex*****on was the issue and a poor frame of mind throughout the round.

Deep breath and go again!

Well that was a bit šŸ’©

38th overall in the Scratch & Peace Major.

After a promising Gross 79 (Nett 70) on Saturday, which had me in 8th place, it was game in and all to play for.

But big cracks appeared in both my swing and mental game today.

Lost my swing with driver from the 2nd until my penalty tee shot on 12th. And then it clicked but damage was done regarding shots gone from poor drives.

Should I have played 4wd off the tee after the 2nd hole? Maybe, but the wind was very odd this afternoon, swirling and my fear was 4wd would have had me too far back on approaches if Iā€™d have been in the fairways.

I know my mental game is poor. To quantify; If I know Iā€™m having a good one, I donā€™t wanna know my front 9 score, as I know Iā€™ll have thoughts of grandeur (itā€™s happened too often and Iā€™ve blown blown up because of it) and likewise if Iā€™m having a bad one, Iā€™d rather not be told, as I donā€™t want confirmation of how poor I maybe playing.

Well today was ā€œshould I or shouldnā€™t I have looked at my score?ā€
This is because on the 12th I hit driver O.B and then the driver swing clicked with the penalty tee shot.
Walking down 13, I oddly decided to count my Front 9 scores, as I felt I had blown it after a double on the 6th, and found I had actually matched the same as my score the previous day at +7. So in making the 8 I had just made on 12, I had now TOTALLY put pay to any slim chance I had of either shooting Sub 80 and now challenging for the win.

Donā€™t get me wrong, I grinded it out, whist seething at my stupidity, giving myself birdie putts on 13, 14, & 16. But alas I couldnā€™t putt the round back.

So what have I learned:
ā€¢ Need to sort out my mental game. Maybe. Dr Bob Rotella book would help?

ā€¢ Physically I need to be stronger, as itā€™s not so much about trying to overpower a course (that ainā€™t ever happening) but I need to be able to get it down there further and know I can use it to my advantage in windy conditions. Friday at Conwy and today has proven that.

Gotta dust myself off quick, as Iā€™m back competing on .tour tomorrow at Waterton Park.

28/05/2024

A very tough day today in the On Par Nutrition Open The Astbury on 2020protour .

33pts was the best I could muster in the end with a gross total of 87 (+16) for the day.

Biblical weather doesnā€™t feel like an exaggeration for us on the course today. I dropped 12 shots 8 holes today with the 7 of those going in 3 holes around the turn in some of the worst rain conditions Iā€™ve ever played in.

But it was the same for all of us, so Iā€™ve no excuses, only surprise, as challenging weather normally suits my game and my hcp as I feel the field often comes back to me.

But even with only the one blob and one 3-putt in the round, 41pts which won, was never really there for me today.
So that was a great score and congrats Peter Mather in a commanding 6pt victory šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ»šŸŒšŸ»

Itā€™s still points for me in the Tour Experience OOM and should keep me in second place on 310pts.

On to Moorallerton Golf Club Mon 3rd June for the next Tour Experience event. But first, itā€™s a 36 hole club Major Sat & Sun. A few loose ends to tie up swing wise, after some big loose shots I had, caused by poor backswing and transition. But itā€™s coming together.

Just hope the right knee holds up for 54 holes in 3 days šŸ˜”

Now to dry off and R.I.C.E the knee.

As always big thanks to the 2020ProTour Team Chris Hanson Golf , Adam Walker , Sue Hanson & starter John Major for organising the event.
Thanks to the sponsors On Par Nitrition and The Astbury for hosting us and putting on a good test. Iā€™ll deffo be coming back when itā€™s dry!

šŸšØCompetition ResultšŸšØ

First full 18 holes of the seasons at Sale GC, for the May Stableford.
Nice to finally get out on a Saturday where the course was playable - just a curse with the land weā€™re on, as drainage is heavily dictated to us by the height of the River Mersey.

This comp came at a good time, as it wasnā€™t a hcp qualifier, due to works being done on the greens which couldnā€™t have been done during priority week coz of weather.
So I wasnā€™t too fussed on my over all scoring on the greens. It was more how I played tee to green that was important.
50% F.I.R hit
50% G.I.R hit

It gave me time to work on some things in the swing that Jo and I have worked on recently with a few tweaks here and there which I can get in from review of my swing the other week. Majority of that will be work Iā€™ll do near the end of the season.

Next evening is hopefully on .tour

Huge thanks to the boy today, for the invite
Much needed and help to get out of my own head space at the moment!

The course was in sublime condition, with a few alterations & enhancements since I last played in Aug 2016. Excellent work by the Greenkeeper and investment by the club.

Good round as well, with a Gross 81/Net Par (+9), which should give me another reduction in the hcp - post on that will follow.

Underpin Classic .tour

Well 6th place is a nice surprise but Iā€™m not bothered about where my results fall, in all honesty. They will just be a bit-product of how I play and the score I shoot - obvious. All Iā€™m bothered about is getting hcp scores in this year, and as I canā€™t submit any at my home course until probably May, itā€™s not a bad start with 35pts.

However, as always Iā€™m REALLY not happy with that as I got in my own head at the turn, coz I STUPIDLY looked at my scores, despite knowing I was playing well.

Then a thinned greenside bunker shot on the 10th, which needed speed and height for a 30yrd shot to a tight pin, resulting in a lost ball, as we couldnā€™t find it in the rough and none of us could reasonably say it went into the water caused the first blob of the day.

this would be a good one for ā€œWhat would Dan do?ā€

This capitulated on 11 where in another greenside trap I thinned the first escape into the face, which the came to rest on the outside of my left footprint in the sand. Just shocking luck from a garbage shot! Also another one for Dan šŸ˜‚
Fortunately and embarrassingly the double bogey still earned me a point.

12th the Par 3 I blobbed once more after a poor contact Release 1 chip sculled the green and a 3 stabbed ensued.

With the weather being at its worse at this point with howling wind, rain and a wind chill of about 6Ā°c, it was head wobble time. My playing partners, , and Josh must have thought I was going insane as I was having a right chunner to myself, to get motivated again.

Fortunately it kinda worked as for the next 6 holes I hit 14pts and was level par gross for those!

Just very annoyed at my bunker play which is usually on point, a few poor chips, Release 1 shots; although I did get robbed of a 25yd chip and run that hit the pin and didnā€™t drop for birdie; and my putting was terrible!!!!!!

Rockliffe Hall was presented superbly once again, and this was a venue change at short notice due to reasons beyond the tours control. Well done 2020Tour šŸ‘šŸ»

You know what! Iā€™m more than happy with that around today on .tour

I had demons going back there and they had to be faced and gotten rid of as the last time I played there was the day mum died and I got the call the moment I drove out of the gate to come back home.

So I couldnā€™t allow that memory stay over my head - yes itā€™s poor strength by me but we all cope differently.

Today was for mum. I played sensibly with only one blip - the Double Bogey - kept calm and played within myself with a few quality shots and some fantastic putts which either dropped or burned the edges.

MASSIVE thanks to my Pro for the day - top lad and close mate. He kept me smiling, laughing and as always we were just two blokes having the craic, talking nonsense.

Awesome to finally meet and get a round with and . Thanks for today folks!
