Many readers keep every issue. Published quarterly since 1992 It's a one-of-a-kind farming magazine started in 1992 by dairy farmer Mike Donovan who got into making and adapting things in his workshop and thought it useful for farmers to get to share their ideas and projects. The publication remains 48 printed pages and you can subscribe or buy in local newsagents. It still focusses on the project

s and since 2014 has had a major section on soil. Because Mike discovered his knowledge of soil was minimal, even after 25 years as a farmer. The more he learned how to look after it the more important he believed it was to get the message out. This was long before any of the UK farming media had got onto it. Independently published, all editorial (no advertising) so no advertorial. Ideal for agricultural students and college lecturers as well as farmers, workers and all involved in farming. Greg McGovern from Co Cavan in Ireland writes “Mike and team - congrats and thanks for all the useful and interesting reading through the years - a good job well done... “. A brief warning to those who drove into London on Tuesday without doing the ULEZ . The charge is £12+ but the warning is that the system is complicated - not for Londoners but the others like us. I went to the Guild of Ag Journos harvest lunch in October (excellent) and misread the poorly written instructions when researching before travelling and confused the ULEZ with the Congestion. ULEZ is 24/7 and the congestion 7.00am to 6.00pm. There are two separate tolls. So I did nothing, only to get a demand through the post for teh fee plus a fine which totallyed £90 for each day ie £180. There was no initial demand and a reminder. Just £90/day please. I sent in a claim but that was rejected as expected. So I tried to pay and have spent literally hours on the phone. They take cheques but they rely on the post.

It seemed to me that some farmers may get tangled up in a system which is almost impossible to understand. I have made six calls, all answered by machine of course.

What's on my mind?? College clearance. They have places to fill and you want to get studying what you're interested in. Machinery, metalwork, carpentry, electronics... it's all available.

You may find the on-line 'interviews' are little more than a two minute chat and your date of birth.

You need to find yourself doing the right course at the right place. Which means asking the right questions.

And while you're there, why not find out if they know about www.farmideas.co.uk and if it gets used as a source of information. Look it up and check it out.

Our Story

Farming: the best work in the world but also among the hardest. So many skills are needed, often by one person. Farmers devise ways to make the job easier, better, quicker, less of a slog. It gives them some family time, can improve the bottom line. Makes them happier, on top of the job.

Practical Farm Ideas is a magazine which shows how they do this. Take a look at a copy and judge how different it is to Farmers Weekly, Farmers Guardian or any other publication which relies on adverts.

I”m Mike Donovan, a journalist who worked for the Financial Times in London, turned farmer and then realised there were some farmers who knew the tips and tricks to make the job easier, safer, and viable. And who are happy to show others how it can be achieved. I visit these clever guys (and gals) take the story and the pics, and publish for anyone interested to see. Greg McGovern from Co Cavan in Ireland writes “Mike and team - congrats and thanks for all the useful and interesting reading through the years - a good job well done... “.
