FIA rule changes that year downshifted sportscar engine capacity from 5.0 to 3.0l, effectively forcing Porsche's withdrawal; the fact that Scuderia Ferrari HP had been honing their 3.0l 312PB for some time was completely coincidental, no need to speculate on this 👀👀👀

Reliability concerns shortened the headline race to just six hours, the weekend instead being billed as "three great races in 24 hours". 🤨 Despite losing a cylinder early on, the dream team of Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx kept going while others faltered to take the unusual win! 🏆

🥵 in 1980: The Argentine Grand Prix's fierce heat, a botched resurfacing and immense ground effect grip tore up the Autódromo de Buenos Aires Oscar y Juan Gálvez track; while most drivers agreed it wasn't raceable, a boycott was avoided - and the cars paid for it, with many suffering blown engines and broken suspension, including a tearful Carlos Reutemann and a rallycrossing Gilles Villeneuve. 😢😵‍💫

The attrition did help future four-time champ Alain Prost to a point on debut, however! ☝️

25 years ago , while testing for the impending 2000 IRL season, Sam Schmidt crashed heavily at Walt Disney World Speedway, the rearwards impact paralysing him. Inspired by his father's tenacious recovery from a similarly devastating crash and empowered by the work of paralysed actor Christopher Reeve, Schmidt engaged in intense physical therapy and surgery; in a few months, he was off the ventilators doctors told him he would use for the rest of his life. 💪

Over the last quarter of a century, Schmidt has immersed himself in racing, forming his own team and winning in both Indy Lights and , and founding Conquer Paralysis Now , which last year opened a state-of-the-art rehab centre in Indianapolis. 👨‍🦼‍➡️

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It was a braw Hogmanay for Scotland - Jim Clark won to begin a staggering run of six F1 victories AND an Indy 500 win, and future three-time champ Sir Jackie Stewart made his World Championship debut, scoring a point to begin a run to a solid third place in the 1965 standings.

Racer and car manufacturer René Bonnet was born 120 years ago. 🇫🇷 Best known as the man behind the world's first rear mid-engined production road car, the René Bonnet Djet - so-named because he preferred the pronunciation of the English hard J, as opposed to the French soft J. 🗣️ It raced at Sebring International Raceway , Nürburgring and 24 Heures du Mans , but its on track exploits didn't lead to sales, and Bonnet was bought out by Matra after less than two hundred were built. 👋
