W***y T. Ribbs broke new ground at a 1985 mid-December test at Circuito Estoril , becoming the first Black person to drive an car. Called in to Brabham by Bernie Ecclestone himself, Ribbs' experience in an array of different motorsports meant he was never intimidated by the BT54's speed and power, even with the immense BMW M12 turbo at his disposal - but it did take time to trust the astonishing braking capacity of an F1 car. 🙏😵‍💫

Though that test was the beginning and end of Ribbs' time as an F1 driver, he exceeded the expectations of both Ecclestone and team boss Herbie Blash. 👏

Mr. F5000 Peter Gethin passed away in 2011; plenty is said of his thrilling 1971 Italian Grand Prix win, but did you know he's one of only two people to beat cars in machinery? 💪

At a misty and dull Brands Hatch in spring 1973, Gethin took his Chevron B24 to eighth on the grid - easily the best F5000 qualifier - and made hay while the, er, rain fell on exalted company: Hill, Fittipaldi, Peterson, Scheckter and Lauda all fell by the wayside. Mike Hailwood looked on for his first F1 win until his suspension failed with five to go. 😫 Denny Hulme inherited the lead - but his clutch gave up on the last lap! Gethin swept past, and Hulme clinched second in a photo finish with James Hunt (who was lauded in some quarters simply for finishing the race!).

John Watson won't remember the race fondly, in a sign of different times: a stuck throttle fired his (prototype) Brabham BT42 into the barriers, breaking his leg and trapping him in the cockpit - for the whole race... 😳

Twenty years ago , a renewed Race Of Champions wrapped up in Stade de France . 🇫🇷 Originally a pure rally event celebrating the and in memory of Henri Toivonen, the RoC steadily metamorphosed into the parallel track stadium botherer we know today - and what a lineup! 🤩 Heikki Kovalainen put himself on the map with a giant killing overall win, and Michael Schumacher and Sébastien Loeb - with nine world titles between them in 2004 - even faced off in a World Champions Challenge. ⚔️

DID YOU KNOW? Desiré Wilson and Alain de Cadenet were born on the 26th and 27th of November - while we're sure that didn't factor into their decision to team up, they had a very successful 1980 season together in the WSC: third on debut at Brands Hatch, and two back-to-back wins! 💅

The first major race in post-WWI Europe was the , running (yes, really) in 1919. The Madonie road circuit was storm-ravaged, with high winds, snow and mud really putting the endurance in endurance racing. 🥶😰

André Boillot won with the drive of his career, and one of the most bizarre ends to a race - after spinning off the road to avoid spectators near the finish, he and his mechanic, both exhausted, pushed their Peugeot L25 back onto the road - unaided to avoid disqualification - and simply reversed across the finish line. 🔙 Unfortunately this would ALSO mean a DSQ, so Boillot drove back across the line, turned around, and finally took the win! 😵🇫🇷
