Neal Megaw Photography & Video Neal is a Freelance Filmmaker, Photographer, Lighting Gaffer & Spark based in Cornwall.

I moved to Cornwall for university in 2017 all the way from Belfast, Northern Ireland. I instantly fell in love with the Cornish landscape and a beautiful Cornish maid called Connie. I love coffee, breakfast food, building computers and atempting to fix electronics... still working on this one. Back in Northern Ireland, I learnt my craft shooting narrative-based films and working in partnership wi

th my best friend to make video content for local businesses and musicians, and even won an award from Film4. Since moving to Cornwall I have produced content for artists, actors, local busineses, theatre companies, charities and many other organisations to help tell their message.

New lighting work 💡
I recently worked as the Gaffer for the first music video by musician Rue. I collaborated with the incredibly talented DOP Billy Abbott to create a lighting look inspired by the Tarantino films, hazy 70s style, using warm tones throughout and keeping Rue constantly in the spotlight. To add contrast, I included some cooler light, but overall, it was a great exercise in balancing ambient fixtures with larger controlled sources. I'm really proud of how it turned out, especially considering the tight schedule we had to work with. Big thanks to my spark Aidan clambering through windows!

The fixtures we used were: a 300d with a 19-degree spotlight, an f22c as the primary key, a snooted Forza 200, a Forza 300 for ambient fill, a Forza 60 as a topper, four pavo tubes for fill and an MC Pro as an eye light.

I Came to Choir - Music Video

I have an exciting new project to share! In case you didn't know, I'm part of (Men Are Singing) Cornwalls first alternative male voice choir. In April, I spent a few days with driving around to capture the members in their spaces, places, personal and professional. It was a rather joyful experience.

Video link available in my bio.

Here's a little blurb about the video.

(Our latest music video is all about why we think choirs like this are so important. The words are direct quotes from the men themselves, about why they come to choir and how it makes them feel, set to music by Seamas Carey. 'I Came to Choir' has become an immediate favourite for audiences and the men themselves)

Big thanks to Peter & Roland for their help during the shoot!

Farewell to 2023, I can't help but feel grateful for another year filled with both challenges and triumphs. Each year, I learn more about myself and the world around me. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to everyone who trusted me to document, produce, and create visual content for them. This year was a time of realization and grounding, a time when I learned to trust in my abilities as a creative practitioner. I had a revelation that collaboration is key. Working with other creative and like-minded people has reignited my passion for creating and producing more scripted film work. I am grateful for the new connections I made this year, connections that will stay with me throughout my career. Through finally producing some personal work, I have found a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to pursue more meaningful projects.

In 2023 I got married in Cornwall to my best friend which was a very personal and special moment for me. It was wonderful to have my family around me while standing on Cornish soil, as it gave them a small taste of why I love this place so much. The day itself was unforgettable and I will cherish it forever. While I faced some challenges with my mental health this year, I have learned to accept that not every day has to be perfect. Some days are simply about getting through it. Despite these challenges, I remain inspired to continue growing, learning, and creating.

Very exited by this. Well done all!! It was an amazing project to have shot Joshua Drualus Pharo Charlie Davies 💛💛

November 2023, in-between working on a feature film, I had the opportunity to document Deep Time Moving… Shortly after the performance, an earthquake occurred in Cornwall... Coincidence? I think not!

Deep Time Moving is a captivating movement-led artwork that is led by the graceful movements of the talented choreographer, mover, and maker, Kyra Norman. This project is an exquisite response to the breathtaking geology of the Lizard peninsula. The Show is a beautiful amalgamation of movement, designed to showcase the magnificence of the geological formations that make the Lizard peninsula unique. With each movement, the show takes the audience on a journey through time, unravelling the secrets of the land, its textures and sound.

A few months ago, I had the amazing opportunity to produce a trailer with Rebecca Hulbert for the children's show Arthur's Club, which is both wonderful and inclusive! Arthur's Club uses key word signing woven into the storytelling throughout, so sign and spoken words are intrinsically linked. Aimed at children aged 3-9, their grownups, and Makaton users, the show will take audiences on an adventure of imagination.

In November 2023, my best friend Chris asked me to light his latest short film, "Faint". This was an incredible opportunity for me to focus on lighting, specifically using Sidus Link and CRMX. I was able to control everything from my iPad, creating lighting states and cues that changed the look and feel of each scene in real-time. It was an amazing experience to be able to contribute to the visual storytelling of the film in such a significant way.

4-day shoot, 3 interior locations, 8 exterior locations, a lot of rain and mud.

In October 2023, I had the incredible chance to shoot “Konin”, a Flym K short film in the Cornish language. Fylm K is an extraordinary collaboration between Screen Cornwall and Cornwall Council that produces films in the Cornish language. The initiative aims to "commission a new short film in the Cornish language that is contemporary, original, and of high quality, set in the 21st century."

-
About Konin
- Tensions mount for a neighbourhood group of children as they spend one final day in a farmer’s field, but it doesn't quite go as expected. Konin (Rabbit), is a short coming-of-age film about friendship, loss, and the difficulty of change performed in the Cornish language.

In 2022, I documented FEAST's first-year ARTS Lab project. I travelled to schools in Cornwall and witnessed talented artists and practitioners working with young people to create incredible art focused around wellbeing.
-
The Project:
Arts Lab grew from the Creative Health and Wellbeing Partnership. Headstart Kernow, FEAST, and Arts Well collaborated to create a creative wellbeing program for young people aged 10-16. The program was funded by HeadStart Kernow via a National Lottery Community Fund grant. An Open Call went out for artists' project ideas, and the program included the '5 Ways to Wellbeing.'

A few months back I got to capture Re:Voice! The show debuted on April 29th, 2023 at Tate St Ives in collaboration with Falmouth University, and was funded and supported by various organizations including Arts Council England and Feast Cornwall.

"Re:Voice" is a participatory theatre performance based on the Re:voice research project. The project aims to provide new perspectives on the interplay between majority and minority in relation to intangible cultural heritage to make European indigenous cultures more visible and resilient. The performance was co-created with a community choir from Penzance, Tuesday Night Fun Club, and draws on research interviews from Cornwall. The narrative is delivered through performance, movement, sound and video, and the show is designed to perform seasonally in various spaces.

Einstein's Idea, featuring Men Are Singing.
**
A few months ago, Seamas presented me with a few concepts for music videos, and one of them stood out to me as something truly remarkable. The opportunity to capture the emotions of these men and produce something truly beautiful was an honor. Men Are Singing is more than just a choir, it has become an integral part of my daily life, providing me with the opportunity to sing, socialize, be myself and have fun.

A big thank you to all of the men and everyone else involved! 💚

May 23, I got to Light a short art film called 'The Next Dawn, The Next Spring' from the amazing . Lighting a choir with sound triggered flash and battery powered LED cob's did have its challenges, especially on the dark north Cornish, coast right next to the ocean! But the 4am call was worth it!!

This was a very fulfilling project, especially the technical side triggering three strobes using a wireless mic, into a sound mixer, outputted to a duration control box then sent to pocket wizard... total madness but it worked!

"The next dawn, the next spring came from a desire to make space for women struggling to have children and those who are childless not by choice."

Last week invited me to document the rehearsals for 'Further Than the Furthest Thing'. This is one epic, cinematic & moving show… Go see it!

This incredible piece was inspired by the true story of the evacuation of Tristan da Cuhna. It tells a sensitive portrait of a community in crisis and gives voice to all that is lost when two countrymen can no longer talk to each other without first making an appointment.
