Twenty-Five Views of Worthing were formed in 1970 by Watford school friends Roger Hillier and Mark Sugden out of the ashes of their psychedelic band Primrose Path. They were signed to a management deal with Island Artists in 1972 and supported the likes of Genesis, Caravan and Mott the Hoople, altho...

Another example of an extremely diverse college gig line-up. Quite what the assembled students made of an evening of Afro-rock, Canterbury prog and morris dancing is unfortunately unknown!

This is quite some line-up from March 1973. The Worthings were the openers of the evening, and the gig even predates the release of next act, Henry Cow's first album. Free-jazz band O***y Lodge featured Keith Tippett and their self-titled album from this year is enjoyably obtuse. The headline act, which featured musical-zelig Paul Buckmaster, bears testament to the lasting impact that Terry Riley's In C (1964) had created.

Good day to all of my fellow Canterbury prog nerds and other good people - Today I listened to this rare 70's UK gem of a record titled 'Twenty Five Views of Worthing'. This has never previously been released in any format until now. Really great studio quality sound and material reminiscent of Supersister, Soft Machine, Egg. Only available on vinyl at Wind Waker Records- >> https://www.windwakerrecords.com/product/25-views-of-worthing R

A lovely review of the Twenty-Five Views of Worthing LP from the folks at Exposé Music Newsletter!

"The closest reference is probably Hatfield and the North, though the Worthings have more jazz in their sound with the increased presence of woodwinds and trombone, so a bit of Soft Machine Third might be detected. But really, this band has a sound all their own, and anyone who enjoys the Canterbury scene should be intrigued by this long lost treasure. The tracks from ‘77 are more concise and song-oriented, but still having that Worthing essence and touch of cheerful insanity. This is music that richly deserves to see the light of day, and Wind Waker Records should be commended for this superb package and well-researched book full of interviews, recollections, photos, and press clippings."

The story of the band 25 Views of Worthing is a fascinating dip into an obscure corner of British music of the 60s and 70s. In 1967, a psychedelic band called Primrose Path was doing damage (sometimes literally) on the scene with their theatrical stage show, which included pyrotechnics, costumes, fa...

Here's a treat for any Twenty-Five Views of Worthing superfans - the post-Worthings band L'Age D'Or which featured Roger Hillier and Mark's brother Ben Sugden on drums. Recording is from 1981 (we think).

Every good band in the '70s needed a transit van to lug the heavy equipment around the country and the Worthings were no exception. Here they are (with friends) larking about on it/in it/under it in 1972/73.

The link below is to a wonderful interview with Jakko Jakszyk from King Crimson. Though entertaining throughout, it is of special interest here as Jakko comments that his, "Favourite band name at the time was Twenty-Five Views of Worthing" (around the 13.40 mark in the video). Jakko grew up in Croxley Green, a village not far from Watford, which was home to The Sportsman pub where the Worthings frequently played and practised in the mid '70s.

This photo dates from the 'transition' period of Twenty-Five Views of Worthing, in which Peter Teychenné joined on trombone, and John Knox took over on bass (Peter left and John second left). This version of the band recorded 'In for a Quick One' at The Sportsman pub in Croxley Green in 1973, which appears on the album. Sadly this line-up broke up out shortly after, the band still sapped of energy after their experiences with Island Records.

Not the most exciting poster design but certainly indicative of how the 'Island' name was used to draw in punters for gigs. Note too the pink design heavily associated with Island's early days. With the label enjoying both critical and commercial success for album releases by the likes of Traffic, Fairport Convention and Free, the Island aura was clearly a persuasive selling point.

Like many bands of the era, Twenty-Five Views of Worthing had an art-school background with Mark attending Maidstone College of Art and Roger at Kingston. While at Maidstone in either 1971 or '72, Mark produced this lovely lithograph of the band based on a black and white photograph using the college's printing equipment.
