As we're gearing up to celebrate our company's 10-year anniversary, we've been reflecting on how much the maritime industry has changed over the past decade. 🌐
From the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to the groundbreaking decision by the IMO in 2018 to halve carbon emissions from the maritime industry, the changes have been monumental.
And let's not forget the impact of the COVID-19 chaos!
Alfa Laval announces the completion of its acquisition of Marine Performance Systems B.V., a Rotterdam-based maritime technology company that has developed the first fluidic air lubrication system on the market.
The move will enable Alfa Laval to bring this environment-friendly technology to market, contributing significantly towards improving ship efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and minimizing emissions from ships.
StormGeo, a leading player in weather intelligence and operational decision support and part of Alfa Laval, has increased its holding in Climatempo, the premier meteorological services provider in Brazil.
With the increased shareholding, StormGeo is set to offer more comprehensive and advanced weather intelligence solutions to customers across South America.
Alfa Laval launches PureBilge Compact to extend the benefits of PureBilge technology to vessels of all sizes.
With PureBilge Compact, Alfa Laval opens its door to both small and large vessel segments to enjoy the benefits of PureBilge technology for bilge water treatment.
The compact, easy-to-install and cost-efficient solution with an enhanced environmental profile will help small and large vessels to meet compliance and sustainability targets.
This new year will bring new regulatory requirements that catalyse the drive to reduce carbon emissions.
The introduction of IMO's Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) rules will act as a stimulus to reduce the carbon intensity of all ships by 40% by 2030 compared to a 2008 baseline. This will increase pressure to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from ships along with commercial pressures to decarbonise vessels and operations.
This year will also see a ban on one antifouling substance and the entry into force of stricter at-berth emissions regulations in California.
Swiss marine power company WinGD – Winterthur Gas & Diesel and Belgian shipping and cleantech group CMB.TECH have signed an agreement on the development of ammonia-fuelled two-stroke engines.
The companies aim to install the ammonia dual-fuel X72DF engine on a series of ten x 210,000 DWT bulk carriers to be built at a Chinese shipyard in 2025 and 2026.
Each quarter we’ll be sharing with you the latest news from our industry and clients, as well as giving you a run down on all the key maritime events going on. You will also, of course, see some of our news, such as Wake Media team and service updates.
Alfa Laval introduces the marine industry’s first biofuel-ready separators.
Biofuels are a current and accessible fuel option that can help marine customers decarbonize. Yet while biofuels reduce CO2 footprint, they also pose new operational challenges. Alfa Laval is first in the market to address them with biofuel-optimized separators and separator upgrades.
After months of hard work, we are pleased to finally announce that we will be sending out our first ever quarterly newsletter!

Last week, we spread some Christmas cheer in the form of chocolate with a donation of selection boxes to The Oak Centre for Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden in Sutton. Santa was paying the children on the ward a visit, so we thought he could hand out the selection boxes! 🎅
The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. The Royal Marsden opened its doors in 1851 as the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education. Today it operates as a specialist cancer hospital and National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre for Cancer, working closely with its principal academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Together, The Royal Marsden and the ICR are ranked in the top five cancer centres in the world for the impact of their research, treating over 59,000 NHS and private patients every year.
The charity also provided us with an Amazon wishlist for the Oak Centre for Children and Young People at the Royal Marsden, where you can purchase a gift for a child spending Christmas on the ward this year by clicking here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/TLUXZI93E01Q?ref_=wl_share 🎁

The Danish ship owner and charterer Christiania Shipping A/S signs with StormGeo to improve its environmental performance and decarbonize its operations with CII simulations.
The specialized chemical ship owning and chartering company Christiania Shipping currently operates 20 vessels and has positioned itself as a leading trade niche player with operations in Europe, West Africa, and the Mediterranean. Eager to improve the environmental performance of its fleet and stay compliant with industry regulations even before they start in 2023, the company added StormGeo’s CII Simulator to its fleet performance management toolbox in June 2022.
Here are some facts, we bet you didn’t know about the spooky celebration!
🎃 Sugar was one of the food items rationed across several countries during WWII. As a result, trick-or-treating became less popular, although it made a reappearance in the 1950s.
🎃 The traditional Halloween colours, orange and black, are thought to have originally signified the harvest (orange) and death (black).
🎃 A pumpkin is just a kind of squash that turns orange around Halloween. They are not just orange, but can also grow white, blue, green, purple, and even black.
🎃 The name Dracula, which means "son of the Dragon," was inspired by a murderous 16th-century conqueror named Vlad Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler.
