⛔️ Storm Éowyn ⛔️

With the safety of customers and staff of paramount importance, we will not be safe to operate passenger services due to the forecast weather conditions across Scotland during .

All ScotRail services are suspended on Friday, 24 January.

We strongly advise you not to travel, as there will be no train services, and no alternative transport will be available.

The Met Office issued an upgraded red warning for Storm Éowyn, which is expected to arrive in Scotland in the morning on Friday, 24 January, bringing extremely high winds, with gusts reaching 100mph in some parts.

The red warning will be in place from 10.00 to 17.00 and covers central Scotland, Tayside, Fife, south west Scotland, Lothian, Borders, and Strathclyde. There is also an amber warning for wind across the rest of the country and a yellow warning for snow covering much of the highlands.

This could lead to trees and other debris falling onto the tracks, trapping trains and putting people in danger. It can also impact service recovery times due to poor road and driving conditions.

Once the warnings pass, the network will have to undergo safety inspections before services can be reintroduced.

Please check the ScotRail website or app before travelling on Saturday morning.

Tickets for travel dated 24 January can now be used from Thursday, 23 January, up to and including Tuesday, 28 January. This means that these can be used before or after the date printed on the ticket.

If your journey has been cancelled or disrupted, you can get a fee-free refund at scotrail.co.uk/refund.

It’s vital that you check your journey before travelling. You can do this via the following channels:

DRIVING DURING HIGH WINDS:

As mentioned in our DriveTime programmes, driving in during severe weather with winds of 70–90 mph can be dangerous. Here are essential tips to stay safe on the road during the storm:

1. Consider Avoiding Travel
• Only drive if absolutely necessary. Check weather updates and listen to local travel advisories. If it’s not urgent, stay off the roads.
• Use public transport or delay your journey if possible.

2. Prepare Before You Drive
• Check your route: Use resources like Traffic Scotland to monitor road closures, bridge restrictions, or flooding.
• Inspect your vehicle: Ensure tires are properly inflated, windscreen wipers are working, and your lights are clean and functioning.
• Pack an emergency kit: Include a phone charger, warm clothes, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.

3. Adjust Your Driving
• Lower your speed: High winds can affect your stability. Driving slower gives you more control and time to react.
• Firm grip on the wheel: Keep both hands on the steering wheel, especially when passing exposed areas or large vehicles.
• Beware of crosswinds: Take extra care on bridges, open roads, and exposed areas where gusts can suddenly hit.
• Increase following distance: Leave more space between you and the vehicle ahead to give yourself room to brake safely.

4. Watch for Hazards
• Fallen debris: Be vigilant for fallen trees, branches, or other debris that might block the road.
• High-sided vehicles: Avoid overtaking trucks, vans, or caravans, as they are more prone to swaying or tipping in strong winds.
• Cyclists and pedestrians: Be cautious of vulnerable road users who might be pushed into your path by the wind.

5. Drive Safely Over Bridges
• Heed restrictions: Some bridges may close to high-sided or all vehicles. Check in advance if your route involves crossing one.
• Be prepared for gusts: Slow down and grip the wheel firmly as you approach.

6. Plan for Delays
• Allow extra time: Storms can cause delays due to accidents or road closures.
• Keep your fuel tank full: Ensure you have enough fuel in case you’re diverted or stuck in traffic.

7. Stay Updated
• Listen to MearnsFM, local radio, or check online resources for updates on weather conditions and road safety.

Emergency Situations
• Know when to stop: If driving becomes too hazardous, pull over safely in a layby or rest area. Avoid stopping on the hard shoulder unless it’s an absolute emergency.
• Call for help if needed: If you’re stuck or involved in an accident, call 999 for emergencies or 101 for non-urgent assistance.

Remember, safety is the priority. If travel is unavoidable, take every precaution to protect yourself and other road users. Stay safe!
