Ombudsman comments on government announcement of duty of candour review

Commenting on today's announcement by the Department of Health and Social Care about a review into duty of candour, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman Rob Behrens said:

"I have long called for closer openness and transparency when things go wrong in the NHS. The duty of candour was intended to reinforce this. However, a decade after its introduction, our Broken Trust report into avoidable deaths in the NHS found that the duty is not always implemented as it should be and called for a full review to assess its effectiveness. I welcome this announcement and the opportunity to contribute the expertise and evidence from my office.

“Despite it being a statutory duty to be open and honest when things go wrong with a patient’s care, I know from the cases we investigate that this doesn’t always happen. Patients and their families deserve better.”

Kettering General Hospital seeks exceptional Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

Kettering General Hospital (KGH) is seeking an ambitious and experienced Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join its vibrant and expanding team.

Applications are invited from candidates on the Specialist Register or within six months of eligibility for entry onto the Register. While a Dual CCT in ICM and Anaesthetics is desirable, it is not essential.

KGH, a bustling District General Hospital in North Northamptonshire, caters to approximately 360,000 individuals, delivering a comprehensive range of acute services. These include an Accident and Emergency Department, Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit (HDU), and a satellite Dialysis Unit, bolstered by support from Leicester General Hospital.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering exceptional care to critically ill patients. Their responsibilities will include leading and managing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while contributing significantly to the hospital’s overarching clinical excellence. The existing team of eight consultants will expand to ten as part of the growth of critical services.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct clinical care provision for critically ill patients in the ICU to ensure top-tier treatment quality.
Leadership and management of the ICU team, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
Oversight of ICU policies and procedures development and implementation.
Active involvement in clinical research, alongside participation in teaching and training initiatives.

The salary range for this role is £93,666 to £126,281 per annum and is accompanied by comprehensive benefits. The role also offers unparalleled opportunities for career advancement within a Trust undergoing transformation since its collaboration with Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust in 2020.

The consultant will help to develop the modern 16-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at KGH, which functions as a combined ITU and HDU for medical and surgical specialities. It currently operates to a maximum dependency of 10 level 3 patients but there are plans to gradually increase capacity. and to improve medical input to outreach, post ITU rehabilitation and medical education.

As part of the hospital's improvement plans the ITU unit will be relocated to a new building, promising opportunities for growth and service development. As an affiliated teaching hospital, KGH maintains strong ties with Leicester Medical School, hosting medical students for teaching and training alongside foundation and speciality trainees from Health Education England, East Midlands. Notably, it is one of the largest employers in the area.

Dr. Selva Panchatsharam, Clinical Lead for ICU at KGH, highlighted, "This is a fantastic opportunity for a consultant to join a highly supportive and collaborative team and play a lead role in managing the ICU team. We are in an exciting phase of development so the consultant will have the chance to shape the future of healthcare at the Trust as we expand and introduce new state-of-the-art facilities."

Dr. Philip Watt, Clinical Director of Anaesthetics Directorate at KGH, added, "KGH offers numerous developmental opportunities and faster career progression due to our size. This role also offers a highly interesting mix of cases. We are a tertiary cardiology centre for Northamptonshire providing PPCI service for the county and regularly admit patients post PPCI, following OOHCA or in severe cardiogenic shock requiring Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump. We also see cases from other medical specialities, haematology, and post-op surgical patients. We have been actively involved in both portfolio and commercial studies and have an impressive record for meeting key targets, such as recruitment to time and target. We have also enrolled patients for several studies including Calories, Promise, Obtain (highest recruiter in the UK), Leopards and Accupass, and SILENCE ICU, amongst others.

“We have a “Good” CQC rating in all 5 areas and pride ourselves on our caring approach, which is consistently reflected in the ‘Friends and Family’ test results. This is the ideal role for a consultant eager to take the next step on their career journey. Plus, by relocating to Northamptonshire, they will benefit from affordable housing, exceptional schools, beautiful countryside, excellent transport links and enjoy an outstanding quality of life.”

The closing date is 11 December 2023. For more information to apply for this role, go to:
