Review: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Theatre Royal Plymouth 🎭

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – a glittering triumph that will leave you howling for more!

Last night, we attended the Press Night for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Theatre Royal Plymouth’s new panto. Going to the panto is such a big Christmas and New Year tradition in many households so it’s no surprise The Lyric was packed to the rafters. For those of you reading this review who haven't quite made up your minds yet about going, stop scrolling and immediately go get your tickets before they all disappear!

It was magical from start to finish with more glitter, sequins and sparkles than I have ever seen! It was like a disco ball had exploded and sprinkled joy and sparkle all around. The opulent and imaginative costumes were just such a feast to the eyes. I cannot even begin to think how much work has gone into this production, a true work of art.

The star-studded cast delivered an electrifying performance filled with hilarious gags that had us in tears and ugly-laughing. But hey, so was everyone else around us. The lines blurred between what was part of the script and what the quick-witted actors came up with on the spot. I’m not sure if Lesley Joseph’s wig was supposed to come off (please someone tell me) but it had us all creasing! She was so utterly perfect as Queen Dragonella!

Andy Ford was superb as Muddles – The Court Jester. As an exceptional comedian and pantomime veteran, he knows exactly how to get the audience going. Rob Rinder (The Man In The Mirror) blinded us not only with his fabulous costume but also excellent humour. Samuel Holmes as The Governess brought sass, drama, fabulous vocals and hilarious jokes. What I loved the most was how they all bounced off each other and genuinely looked like they too had a blast! Briana Craig as Snow White and Scott Maurice as Prince William of West Hoe were absolutely adorable, every inch the fairytale sweethearts.

I could probably spend all day singing praises for this show. We were laughing so hard our faces were hurting after. My daughter and I were still giggling this morning trying to recreate a small part of the tongue-twister scene from the show. It truly is a must-see production! Expect impressive pyro, fantastic music, magic, gorgeous outfits and laughter from start to finish.

It’s on till 11th January.

Christmas arrives in Sherford with Festive cheer and community spirit 🎄

Christmas has once again delivered magic and merriment to Sherford, with the community embracing the season in style. Marking its ninth Christmas since construction began, Sherford has been transformed with twinkling lights, carols around the town Christmas tree, and events that have brought neighbours together to celebrate this special time of year.

At the heart of the festivities was the annual Sherford Community Celebration, run by Sherford Community Trust and Sherford Community Church – with support from the Sherford Consortium, a partnership between award-winning national housebuilders, Taylor Wimpey & Vistry Group, which includes Countryside Partnerships, Linden Homes and Bovis Homes.*

On Saturday 14th December, families flocked to enjoy a bustling Christmas market filled with artisan gifts and local produce, and headed to Sherford Community Hub for children’s crafts and a visit to Santa’s grotto. The day culminated with the community gathering to sing carols around the Christmas tree, creating a moment of joy and connection. The following day, Santa took to the streets, traveling through Sherford on his sleigh with his elves, to spread festive cheer.

The arrival of Christmas in Sherford was made even more meaningful by this year’s charitable giving. As well as presenting the gift of a Christmas tree, the Sherford Consortium also made a £300 festive donation to local good causes. Sherford Community Trust received £150 to help fund mementos and materials for the community celebrations. A further £150 was donated to Jeremiah’s Journey, a local children’s bereavement charity that has supported several Sherford families. One Sherford family, who are ambassadors for the charity, have been especially touched by its vital work.

Peter Sadler, Managing Director of Vistry Cornwall South West, part of the Sherford Consortium, said: “Every year, Sherford’s Christmas celebrations grow. It is a heartwarming reminder of the town’s growing spirit, cementing its place as a close-knit and thriving community. Christmas is a time for giving and coming together, and we are proud to support the community and help Sherford shine bright during this special time of year.”

Judy Talbot, from the Sherford Community Land Trust, added: “Christmas in Sherford is always a highlight of the year, and this year has been no exception. Thanks to the hard work of our Residents Panel and the wider community, we have created magical moments that bring people together. We are grateful to everyone who made it possible and wish everyone in Sherford a very Merry Christmas.”

Over 800 Santas dash through the Barbican sun for the annual Santa Fun Run.

Plymouth’s waterfront was transformed into sea of Santas on Sunday 8th December as over 800 runners, walkers and joggers, and canine friends, took part in the annual Santa Fun Run. The festive event, organised by Saltram Rotary Club, in partnership with Plymouth Waterfront Partnership was held in aid of two local charities, Jeremiah’s Journey and Shekinah.

Jon Walton and Kim Downer, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership

“What an amazing festive atmosphere there was across the whole waterfront on Sunday. The new start and finish line at Commercial Wharf provided the perfect backdrop as a ‘sea of Santas’ rolled through our beautiful historic quarter in a wave of red Santa suits and hats!

Events like this take months of planning and aren’t possible without the support of local businesses, volunteers, Plymouth City Council and South West Highways. Thank you to everyone who took part and supported the Santa Fun Run. I am personally delighted I beat my time from 2023 [Jon]!”

Roger Punch, Saltram Rotary Club

“Saltram Rotary Club were delighted with the event, attracting in the region of 800 Santas – an absolute sea of red flooding the iconic streets of the Barbican and The Hoe once again. This new venue is so popular, not only supporting the very special Plymouth based charities of Jeremiah’s Journey and Shekinah, but also the businesses around the waterfront.

The atmosphere at the new start/finish area on Commercial Wharf was also a great success, forming a beautiful natural arena. We are indebted to the brilliant team from the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership for their vital support, and for the 80 volunteer route stewards who devoted their morning to us.”

Kristy Winters, Shekinah

“We are incredibly grateful to Saltram Rotary Club for once again choosing Shekinah as one of the charities to benefit from this year’s Plymouth Santa Fun Run. Their support means so much and helps us continue our vital work with those most in need.

A huge thank you as well to Plymouth Waterfront Partnership for organising the route again this year. Their dedication to making this event such a success is truly appreciated.”

John Naismith, Jeremiah's Journey

“As a small local charity that has never received any statutory or commissioned funding throughout its 28 years, support such as that offered to Jeremiah’s Journey by Saltram Rotary and their iconic Plymouth Santa Fun Run has a massive impact for us. It has also enabled us to work with our friends at Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Shekinah too. The whole project has been an absolute joy.

We were extremely lucky with the weather and all the hard work came to fruition with the amazing sight of 800 Santas running around The Barbican and The Hoe. Everyone (including us) had an absolute ball. Thank you so much to Saltram Rotary for letting us be a part of it.”

All participants received a free Santa suit and a finishing medal, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone involved. Participants have until the end of January to collect their sponsorship monies with the final amount raised being divided between Jeremiah’s Journey and Shekinah.

The aim is to get 1,000 Santas for 2025!

Partnership to get Plymouth ready for massive Government investment.

A city-wide partnership has been established, uniting Plymouth City Council, Babcock International Group (Babcock) and the Royal Navy, to ensure Plymouth has what it needs to support the future growth of the city.

The partners will work together to ensure that Plymouth has the right infrastructure in place to enable critical programmes delivered at Devonport that support the UK’s Submarine and Surface Fleet. Babcock’s Devonport facility, where major naval nuclear infrastructure investments are already underway are developing state-of-the-art facilities, to meet the evolving needs and availability of the UK’s Submarine Fleet.

Babcock’s Devonport facility needs to attract an estimated 5,500 employees over the next ten years, just to sustain its core defence workforce, and a further 2,000 construction workers to sustain delivery of the infrastructure contracts at the busy site.

Known as the ‘Growth Alliance Plymouth’, the partnership will focus on three areas when it comes to investing in the wider city, working with the Government to make sure investment delivers a balanced approach for everybody in Plymouth and the region. They will consider areas such as education and skills, housing and regeneration, transport and innovation.

Last week, John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, agreed to take a cross-government approach to ensuring that the wider city of Plymouth is ready to put these plans in place. Next week, a cross departmental group of senior officials will meet to begin work, with representatives from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Review: Father Christmas at Theatre Royal Plymouth 🎭

A Ho-Ho-Ho-ly Jolly Good Show! Father Christmas lands at Theatre Royal Plymouth to spread some festive cheer. I attended with my 13-year-old who at first objected, saying she might be a little too old for this one, but my oh my she was quickly proven wrong! The show really lends itself to audiences of all ages with witty humour right from the start. It’s a delightful festive treat for the whole family!

This heart-warming adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ beloved book brings the magic of Christmas Eve to The Drum. The production is simply stunning, there’s just so much to take in. Just wait till you see the giant sleigh pulled by the adorable reindeer! There may also be some snow in the forecast.

The clever set design transforms the stage into different locations as Father Christmas gets on with his day. We get to have a little peek at his usual routine on the busiest day of his calendar year! He’ll be cooking his breakfast, tending to animals, planning a holiday in the sun and, well, doing his business – with some interesting sound effects may we add.

Nathan Masterson as Father Christmas is simply superb! His grumpy charm and endearing moments had the audience roaring with laughter and sighing with tenderness. For someone who lives in the North Pole, he really isn’t keen on the “Blooming Cold!”. We were in absolute stitches!

The talented puppeteer Amber-Rose Perry delivers a fantastic performance. Her attention to detail helps to breathe life into Father Christmas’ four-legged companions.

Last, but certainly not least, the incredible Stacey Ghent! Stacey is a hard of hearing actress and musician who I personally could not keep my eyes off of. You’ll see her on a raised platform in a little attic room, nestled among the rooftops. She provides some incredible sound effects. Her facial expressions and reactions to Father Christmas’ antics are simply hilarious.

Wholesome, funny, festive and filled with wonder. It was everything we hoped for and more. Even Scrooge would feel Christmassy after watching this. We could not recommend Father Christmas enough!

🎅 Running until 28th December
