Great news for a local project.

Some great news for everyone that has supported our project to date, we’ve secured a grant from Devon Environment Foundation to provide more nests to help encourage natural recolonisation of Ospreys in Devon.

Fantastic time of the year to be out on the Isle of May to witness the invasion of the pregnant Grey Seals. Fairly kind weather as well. We have not had the need to go out there this year and kind of miss it.

A fun event raising funds to build Osprey Nests on the River Erme. Let's come together to get nesting pairs of these beautiful birds back!

Having had significant involvement in the formative years of the Scottish Seabird Centre we wish them luck in the search for a new CEO. It is a fantastic place.

After 6 successful years leading our Charity, our CEO – Susan Davies FRSB - is moving on. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for inspiring people to act for Scotland’s seas to shape the future of our Charity.

Our Chair, Stuart Housden said, “We are very grateful for the leadership that Susan has provided to the Scottish Seabird Centre on its path to playing a more prominent role in marine nature conservation in Scotland and to promoting our visitor attraction and activities to educate and inspire more people to act for Scotland’s seas and amazing wildlife found there. Despite this having been a challenging period, not least with the pandemic and rising business costs, we have established much stronger links with our local and science communities and continue to increase our reach and impact through new partnerships.

With a new 5-year strategy and business plan to develop in the coming year this is a great opportunity for someone to build on the progress made as we enter the next 25 years in our Charity’s journey”.

Found this bit of comparison video quite interesting. I believe Gulls are more accurate if they recognise ice cream or chips whereas Corvids recognise that a biscuit must be recovered in one piece before being dunked in your tea.

Lovely to see the young Ospreys taking their first flight. This nest has been one of the high spots in what has been a poor year for successful nests. The atrocious summer weather has seen chicks blown off their nest and even whole nests destroyed by the high winds. Heavy rain has made fishing trips less successful and colder than usual temperatures have impacted survivability.

This nest is one of the more complex to provide a live stream from as it is an Osprey built nest rather than man made and is a bit higher up than normal. We need to use 3 separate radio links as well as 500 metres of ethernet cable and 300 metres of fibre optic. There are 3 separate solar power installations all in remote locations. All this equipment is installed in late February when the weather is usually very cold and wintery.

We work with a fantastic team of foresters and ecologists at Forestry and Land Scotland.

Last week we were in Pembrokeshire installing a monitoring system to allow the MoD to observe an important Guillemot colony during a live firing exercise. The MoD ecologists are able to view the 4 cameras remotely to ensure that the birds are not disturbed by the loud bangs that the exercise creates. The cameras used are made by UK based 360 Vision Technology Ltd who we have worked closely with for over 10 years.

Doing a little maintenance up in the hills above Glentress Mountain Bike centre.Bit cold and wet. Thankfully Stuart from FLS was able to get the Polaris most of the way to the Solar panels. Good news is that we now have full power back at Glentress Odpreys Nest 1 and Nest 2 is also working after a faulty part was replaced.
