Had a great time recording live acoustic sessions in the Millennium building on Union Street a few weeks ago!

I asked local musicians and to come record acoustic performances in this massive space and managed to get some great audio! Follow them all for some new music!

For close mics used an SM57 for vocals and some lil pencil condensers on guitars (Behringer C2s). I also ran a ribbon mic all the way up to the back of the room (t.bone fathead clone, really rate) for this massive natural reverb that I've compressed the hell out of and added to the mix.

So excited to be recording on location, and it was interesting picking out the right mics for the job. It turned out the cheapest mics I had were the best ones for the job, punching well above their weight, so I guess this is a lesson to never judge a mic by what you've paid for it 😂
Favourite part of editing has been deciding how much of the seagull noises from outside to keep in the mix (mmm ambience)

The space is currently being refurbished and revitalised by and Eat Work Art ( ) who were kind enough to let me use the space, they're planning loads more exciting things and events in the space coming soon so please follow them for more info on that!

More to follow on this once videos are all put together but I'm feeling very positively about this project and can't wait to release all the footage!

Merry Christmas everyone! 😁🎄

Exciting news, I'm opening a new recording and production space in Plymouth city centre! It's absolutely a work in progress at the minute but I'm way too excited to not share some pics 🔥🔥

This is a timeline of how it looked when I first viewed it, to putting the first coats of paint on, up until yesterday when I started moving the first bits of furniture in (on Christmas Eve lol). The transformation seems massive already!

The room was just an empty shell when I got it but I've been building it up in my free time and it's starting to feel like a solid foundation for a proper creative space 😁

Loads more new bits coming, and I've still got to move all my existing stuff over so expect updates! 🔥🔥

Really enjoyed mixing and mastering this live session for August Charles & co. at the start of the month! Some really outstanding musicianship in these tracks from everyone involved, and it was mint to hear the songs played during his interview on BBC Introducing in Sheffield! 🔥🔥

NYE and I'm mastering! Going over some unreleased material from my mates band and love how it's sounding so far!
Automating saturation levels and adding a small volume boost to the sides is bringing so much extra oomph out of the chorus! I've A/B'd it with the original normalled to 0 so you can hear the contrast, feels a lot brighter and has loads of energy!

Comping some bits from recording with the other week, absolutely love this bass tone! 🔥
We got this by running Sam's project bass through EQD Plumes for tone shaping/light boost and then through the green channel of EQD Spires (absolutely cranked with the tone rolled right down) for fuzzy goodness! It gets this insane break up at the start of each note and gives this section a proper cool vibe!

Quick snap from this week's recordings with ! Really happy with bass tones on this record, focused more on getting the sound in the room rather than relying on amp sims and I feel like there's a ton more energy and low end presence as a result!
Used Sam's project bass through the studio's Trace Elliot head and Marshall cab and got a great blend between a Beta 52 and 57 (after a bit of moving them around, gotta check that phase!)
EQD Plumes gave a lovely bit of crunch and contouring to his tone and we got this one insane broken up fuzzy sound for a solo from absolutely cranking the green channel on my EQD Spires (which sounds awesome and I want to use it on everything). Can't wait to get this mixed 🔥🔥

Latest single "I Know You Know" from Extras is out now! Really enjoyed working on this track with them back in Feb! They've got some proper attitude when performing and I think it comes across so well in this track, especially when everything comes together for a massive final chorus and guitar solo at the end ⚡️⚡️

Proper solid session with Tony yesterday, rerecording vocals to some hardcore punk tracks that his band had originally recorded in the early 80s!
The goal was to match the sound of instrumentals that had been taken straight from 40 year old cassettes! This was a really challenging and fun session to work on, and all the usual rules were out the window! The tracks that he'd given me were a thunderous wall of noise when played back; they were raw, completely brickwalled, and inherently punk, so the challenge here was to capture a live sounding vocal that can be heard through the mix, but is saturated (distorted to hell) and compressed enough to match the sound and energy of the original tracks.
Didn't want to use a mic that was too clean or clinical sounding for this, so had a shootout of some of my fave dynamic mics. We were looking for a live sounding mic that would suit his vocal style and had a good bit of presence to it. Between the Neumann BCM705, Shure Beta 57A and Shure 55SH ii, the 57 won, not something I'd usually use for studio vocals but in this case it certainly did the job!
A proper fun day overall, love having to work outside the box and do something completely different! If anyone's got any more unusual requests let me know, let's work together!

Really excited to have recorded an original Christmas song with singer-songwriter this week! A really talented songwriter and performer, she tracked her own drums, guitars and vocal parts in the space of one session! Now to mix, master it and get it ready to release!
Been testing a few stereo miking techniques to get a wide, clean sound from the acoustic, looks wonky in photos but really pleased with the results. Two C214s capturing different tonal qualities of the guitar, panned hard left and right. Has anyone got any favourite miking techniques for an acoustic?

New addition to the studio! This Dark Terror valve amp is an absolute monster for heavier music! Astounded at how much punch you can get from such a tiny box, there's some downright menacing tones for high-gain riffs and chugs. Come try for yourself if you don't believe it!

Spent this weekend recording drums with the immensely talented Huw Griffiths! We used the session to sample his absolutely gorgeous Tama Hyperdrive, recording one shots, beats and breaks ready to be sampled, sliced and spliced! Such a good oppurtunity to play with some different mics and positioning in order to capture perfect one-shots! Secret weapon: the Neumann BCM 705 dynamic mic! Normally used for radio broadcasts but works so well on instruments too!
