Hereward Radio

Hereward Radio The creation of a community radio station that has created a lasting legacy and educational resource Hereward Radio, a new sound with an old name.

A true community station is being created to give a voice to the people of Peterborough and the surrounding areas. The station itself will bring you the best local talent both in front of, and behind, the microphone while helping the entire community in every way possible. There really is great music and so much more at Hereward Radio. We aim to build the station on the three pillars of education

for all the area's educationally disadvantaged groups, truly engage with the community by going out and supporting local events, and provide a facility for other charities, community groups and individuals to use to promote their own aims and goals, all while entertaining you in a way unique to Hereward Radio. We believe it's especially important to have close links with local schools and to tackle underachievement in all deprived communities by engaging young people in fun activities. We aim to offer training for school pupils to design, produce and broadcast their own radio show. This would include how to write a script for a show, “jingle” production, promotion of their broadcast and the actual broadcast itself. We plan to emphasise the positive rewards of education and what can be achieved by hard work and determined endeavour and to introduce school pupils to real world work related skills. As well as encouraging schools to come to the studio and produce their own shows we aim to give children an insight into the working world by offering work experience for them. Learning new skills and mixing with varied and new communities. We have a charity coordinator to work closely with as many charities as possible to listen to their needs and to find a way that we can best help them raise awareness of long running campaigns or just offer a way to update interested parties on the latest news. We will offer them slots to produce their own programmes, free advertising or just the occasional drop in guest performance. We can even cater for the individual who wants to highlight a short lived charity event or cause. We will offer opportunities for disabled people to get involved in an activity which will give them the chance to socialise with others and increase their confidence and learn new skills. The unemployed will be given the chance to re-engage with society and help their own community. Newcomers to the city can make new friends or practice their English. The final element to the station will be involvement in the community by engaging in outside broadcasts and supporting other suitable events outside of the station. We bring the fun to you. Getting out into the community will promote the station and will inform people there is a fantastic community facility situated in the heart of the city that is available to be used by all. We want people to actually witness an outside broadcast in operation and meet their favourite DJ’s and get involved with the project and allow prospective volunteers a first hand experience of what they could ultimately achieve with the training that would be provided. We want people to get caught up in the excitement of an outside broadcast and the excitement that is Hereward Radio! By the Community, For the Community!

It was a pleasure for Hereward Community Radio to be featured on German TV channel Das Erste to look at the work we do with the Lithuanian community in the area. Das Erste is the flagship national television channel of the ARD association of public broadcasting corporations in Germany. Thanks to Hereward Community Radio presenter Snow Snieguolė Maliavskaja and the Chair of the Peterborough Lithuanian Community Kestutis Liugaila for their help and involvement.

Some of the founding principles that Hereward Community Radio has aspired to since its inception in 2014 was the aim to challenge oneself to be better, achieve more than is thought possible and to help young people achieve their aspirations and goals in life through education. These goals we continue to pursue to this day, so many thanks to Hereward Radio presenter Snow who gave up her time for free to conduct her 3rd show "Shoulder to Shoulder" in English to help train William who was on work experience from Ormiston Bushfield Academy.
