A man has been jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering six-year-old schoolboy Rikki Neave in Peterborough nearly 30 years ago.

In April James Watson, 41, was found guilty of Rikki’s murder following a trial at the Old Bailey in London.

Today (24 June) he was sentenced to life in prison.

Tributes have been paid to Peterborough brothers Luke (17) and Lewis (13) Smith who died following a single vehicle collision on Saturday.

Their family said: “The loss of Luke and Lewis has utterly devastated the family. They were as close as brothers could be and were the most loving sons, brothers, cousins and good friends to many. Their life has been tragically cut short.

“They have left a huge hole in the family that will never be filled. As parents we are broken that we find ourselves writing this and will miss them both for the rest of our lives.”

We have launched a murder investigation after a man was shot in the early hours of yesterday morning.

We were called out to Crabtree in Paston at 12.34am following reports of a gunshot being heard.

Mihai Dobre, 29, of Oundle Road, Peterborough, was taken to hospital, however he was pronounced dead at 8.03pm last night.

DI Richard Stott, from our Major Crime Unit, said: "While we have not yet made any arrests we are following up a number of leads, however I would appeal to the local community to get in touch with us if they have any information.

“I would like to reassure the community that these type of incidents are extremely rare in Cambridgeshire and we believe the wider public are not at any risk, although I understand it is extremely concerning.

“We have got family liaison officers who are supporting Mihai’s family at this very difficult time. We are working closely with neighbourhood teams and local investigative resources to provide additional, dedicated patrols in the area and are doing all we can to find those responsible."
