Malawi is stepping confidently onto the global stage in the conversation on artificial intelligence, with the Minister of Higher Education, Jessie Kabwila, leading the country’s delegation to the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Bangkok.
The forum, running from June 24 to 27, brings together global thought leaders, policymakers, and tech innovators to shape the future of ethical AI governance.
Kabwila, joined by Associate Professor Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Ministry, is representing Malawi with full sponsorship from UNESCO. Their participation underscores Malawi’s growing influence in shaping responsible technological development and leveraging AI for sustainable growth.
Back home, Malawi is simultaneously validating a cornerstone policy the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) during a high-level session at the Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.
Led by the Secretary for Higher Education, Levis Keliyasi Eneya, and UNDP Resident Representative, Fenella Frost, the validation process brings together national experts under the National Science, Technology and Innovation Technical Working Group (NSTI-TWG).
This reflects Malawi’s holistic approach to aligning domestic policy with global ethical standards.
As ethical dilemmas around AI continue to dominate international discourse, Malawi’s dual engagement in global dialogue and national policy reform signals its ambition to lead by example promoting innovation that is not only intelligent but also principled.
