Government Closes Chaminade Marianist Secondary School Over Corporal Punishment Violations

Lilongwe, Malawi 🇲🇼

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has taken decisive action by shutting down Chaminade Marianist Secondary School located in Lilongwe due to the unauthorized use of corporal punishment and governance issues at the institution to discipline students

Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Mphatso Nkuonera, confirmed the closure on Friday, January 17th, 2025 emphasizing that corporal punishment is not only outdated but also illegal under the Country National Laws. “It is true that the Ministry has closed Chaminade Marianist Secondary School for administering corporal punishment to students at the institution. As you are aware, this act is against the laws of the country, and the closure is effective immediately,” Nkuonera stated.

The move marks the first school closure of 2025 by the Ministry, reflecting its commitment to uphold educational standards and the students rights to fair educational environments and ensure security for all students in schools across the country. The decision comes as part of broader efforts to ensure that all educational institutions adhere to the governing laws and regulations designed to protect learners.

Chaminade Marianist Secondary School administration now faces the challenge of addressing the governance issues that led to this drastic measure as the Ministry calls for adherence to lawful practices in education, nationwide

The closure has raised concerns within the surrounding communities about the future of the students affected and the implications for educational governance as a whole in Malawi. The Ministry continues to advocate for a safe and supportive learning environment that is free from violence and mistreatment by either teachers, officials or fellow students irrespective of status, gender or identity, social affiliations and ideological preferences .

Dr. Levis Eneya, Director of Higher Education, underscored the validation process importance, explaining that the bill aims to consolidate various existing acts governing higher education into a coherent framework dedicated to quality assurance. He noted that the law would require all institutions to meet established quality standards before accepting students.

“This law will govern all higher education institutions under a single framework, establishing standards and procedures that everyone must follow,” Dr. Eneya remarked. He also indicated that the academic calendar would be standardized according to the Minister directives, ensuring streamlined operations across all higher education institutions.

Adding to the conversation, Professor Wales Singini, Vice Chancellor of Mzuzu University, emphasized the significance of the workshop in unifying operational practices among public universities. “Our goal is to consolidate all efforts in the higher education sector so that we can work cohesively within a single operational framework and calendar,” he said.

As stakeholders engage in this important dialogue, the collaboration marks a pivotal moment in shaping the future of higher education in Malawi. The initiative gives the long waited promising and enhanced quality educational systems besides, promoting collaboration for better access to standardized academic institutions for students, nationwide. With the focus keenly placed on creating a unified and improved educational experience, the initiative reflects a commitment to making education a key priority for the nations development and exclusive competitiveness at world universities platforms.
