Dr. Dalitso Kabambe Wins The UTM Presidential Elections at The 2024 Delegates Conference in Mzuzu

In a significant development for the United Transformation Movement, UTM, Dr. Dalitso Kabambe merged to be the winning candidate and now the new President during the party 2024 Delegates Conference held in Mzuzu on Sunday, November 17th, 2024. This consequential decision comes as the party gears up for the upcoming general elections where UTM aims to consolidate the most prominent position in the country, amongst the political elites in Malawi.

The former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi and a remarkable figure in Malawian politics and an academia, has been a vocal advocate for economic transformation and social justice. Dr. Kabambe has a rich background in public service besides, holding a PhD in Economics and serving in various capacities similarly, as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi during the previous DPP regime. As the Governor of the Central Bank in the country, the newly elected UTM President earned distinguished recognitions for his innovative policies towards stabilization of the dilapidated country economy.

At his Presidential inauguration addressing the UTM members, the excitement was reflected and palpable among all participating delegates, members, supporters and stakeholders representing all sectors of the UTM organization in Mzuzu, nationally and the Diaspora Region

The conference similarly, featured keynote addresses from various party leaders and members, highlighting UTM achievements since the formation and the roadmap for the future of the party. Discussions focused on strategies to enhance grassroots mobilization, improve party visibility and strengthen alliances with other political entities in the country

Dr. Kabambe appointment comes at a critical juncture as UTM seeks to build upon the existing comprehensive grassroots support and base whereas, appealing to the broader electorate. Many observers sees the coming in of Dr. Kabambe leadership as a potential game changer for the party, particularly in the organizational efforts to engage younger voters and address the major concerns facing this youthful electorate which comprises almost over 60 percent of the population in the country

The newly elected President emphasized the importance of unity within the party and called for a robust campaign strategy that prioritizes transparency and accountability. “We are committed to a new kind of politics in Malawi, one that truly reflects the voices and aspirations of our people,” he added.

Voting took place earlier today with many participants casting their ballots for critical positions including the President, Vice Presidential and the Secretary General among others.

The atmosphere is electric as attendees engage in dancing and celebrations led by popular local artists as Saul Chembezi who has provided a soundtrack that enlivens the occasion. As results are being counted, the excitement grows even more strife with many party supporters showing enthusiasm for their preferred candidates.

This convention marks a significant moment for the UTM party following the passing of their founder and former president Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima on June 10, 2025. The event serves not only as a platform for electing new leadership but also as a gathering for mourning and celebrations of the Zlife and Legacy of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima within the party and the broader communities the organization represents and serves

DPP, allied parties to discuss concerns over voting machine plans

In Lilongwe, Alfred Gangata, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) deputy leader for Malawi’s central region, urged supporters to show genuine commitment, cautioning against superficial loyalty that only serves during election times.

According to Gangata, insincere backing has led to deep issues in Malawi's political landscape.

He expressed confidence that, under Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s leadership, the DPP has a strong chance of reclaiming power in the upcoming elections.

During the rally, Levi Luwemba, the DPP’s deputy director of electoral affairs, revealed plans for a confidential meeting with leaders from four political parties—the DPP, United Transformation Movement (UTM), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and United Democratic Front (UDF).

The parties intend to address concerns with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) over its plan to implement a voting machine for ballot counting through protest.

Luwemba criticized the MEC for seeming biased towards the machine, insisting the commission should remain impartial.

Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, the DPP’s northern region governor, voiced criticism of Lazarus Chakwera, the leader of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), accusing him of misleading the public about his intent to run in the 2025 elections.

The rally held at the Chinsapo UNICEF Ground in Lilongwe, on November,10,2024 drew significant attention, with prominent DPP members like Hon. Ben Phiri, Hon. Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, and National Youth Director Hon. Norman Chisale in attendance.

The Vice President of Democratic Progressive Party, Alfred Gangata has arrived at Chinsapo UNICEF ground to hold a political rally in Lilongwe.

The Vice President has been accompanied by some regional leaders including Hon Ben Phiri, Hon Christopher Mzomera Ngwira and the party national Youth Director Hon Norman Chisale.

Members from United Democratic Front (UDF) and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) are also at the rally.

Minister of Education Launches FAWEMA Strategic Plan and Mastercard Foundation Phase Two Project

On Friday, November 8th, 2024, the Malawi Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima officially launched the 2024-2028 strategic plan for the Forum for African Women Educationists Malawi (FAWEMA) and the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation project. The event took place at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

In her speech, Minister Wirima emphasized the importance of these initiatives, calling them essential for empowering the country’s youth and fostering a brighter future for Malawi.

She stressed the need to invest in skillsets development, noting that young people make up a large part of the national population.

"We cannot build a better Malawi without investing in building a strong skills base among our young people including those who are underprivileged, disabled or refugees," the Honorable Minister added.

Honorable Kambauwa Wirima pointed out that these efforts align with Malawi key development strategy, MW2063, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Minister urged leaders to actively engage in empowering young people as their successful inclusion is critical to the country long-term vision.

The FAWEMA Strategic Plan and the Mastercard Foundation project place a particular emphasis on promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education, especially for girls at the tertiary level.

The goal is to raise the gender parity index from 0.065 to 0.9 by 2030 in line with recommendations from the recent Ministry of Education Joint Sector Review (JSR).

Minister Wirima also commended FAWE, FAWEMA, and the Mastercard Foundation for their commitment to making education more inclusive, accessible and affordable. She urged other partners to support FAWEMA vision for an equitable educational system.

“By supporting these bright and ambitious young people, we are laying the foundations for a prosperous and inclusive future for the Malawi,” she concluded, reiterating the belief that "Education Is Key."

This launch represents an important step toward empowering the youth of Malawi besides, ensuring that all children irrespective of their backgrounds have the chance to succeed and excel in life

Malawi 2063 Vision - Education Sector Leaders Discuss Milestones and Future Steps

At the 2024 Annual Education Joint Sector Review, JSR Meeting, Malawi Education Minister, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima shared a vision for a stronger and more inclusive education system.

Gathering at the Bingu International Convention Centre, government leaders and development partners came together to focus on practical steps for improving the education experience for students and teachers across Malawi.

The Honorable Minister Wirima emphasized the need for unity and ongoing collaboration to achieve the objectives in the National Education Sector Investment Plan (NESIP 2020-2030) and the Malawi long-term vision, Malawi 2063. She urged all stakeholders to maintain their commitment to these plans, highlighting that meaningful change in education relies on a collective effort among students, faculty, teachers, leaderships and all stakeholders

The minister acknowledged recent achievements, such as better-equipped schools, more textbooks, improved transitions to secondary education, enhanced teacher training programs and strengthened infrastructures and research opportunities in the higher education.

However, she also pointed out on areas that need an extensive ongoing support. These pressing sectors include, emergency education services, school hygiene and sanitation, broader access to secondary schooling, continuous teachers training programs and workshops and better data systems for shaping the education policies.

The JSR meeting reflected a shared dedication to these priorities, aiming to build a more adaptable and supportive educational system for Malawi future generations and the current generation of young people and professionals to take advantage of such opportunities

UTM National Executive Committee in Collaboration with Its President Michael Usi Resolves Party Differences Amid Upcoming Convention

United Transformation Movement, UTM held a press briefing at its headquarters in Area 10, Lilongwe, to outline preparations for its upcoming convention scheduled for November 17th, 2024. Party Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala provided updates on the Convention events while addressing concerns about lower voter registration ahead of the 2025 elections.

During the briefing, Njawala revealed that the National Executive Committee convened earlier this week to finalize details for the convention. Honorable Njawala confirmed that the nomination Fees for aspiring candidates would remain the same while, revealing the deadlines for submission of nomination papers which is set to occur on November 11th, 2024. The party has allocated a budget of 250 million MWK for the events, whereas an additional 30 million MWK has been reserved for miscellaneous activities, unforeseen circumstances and comprehensive convention overall expenses.

In an effort to bolster funding for the convention, the UTM party has organized a fundraising dinner, as highlighted by the party Secretary General, Dr. Patricia Kaliati. She emphasized the importance of financial support to ensure the convention success and effectiveness.

Addressing questions about the nomination status of Dr. Michael Usi, the current party president whom came to power after the demise of it's founder, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima in a plane crash on June 10th, 2024, Njawala suggested that Usi may have submitted his nomination papers via email, though this has yet to be confirmed.

They press briefing was the UTM strategic approach to instill hope amongst most Malawians whom have been hesitant to register for the 2025 elections amid the widespread disillusionment with political parties unprecedented conducts and leadership dilemmas in the country. Njawala urged citizens to believe in the possibilities of change and citizenry participation in the democratic processes of voting which is the Republic Constitutional mandates to assume the changes they aspire to see in the country.

The United Transformation Movement has shown the eagerness to lead the flagship as the party gears up for the upcoming convention in mid November. The UTM party leaderships appears focused on reviving enthusiasm and effective engagements amongst voters. This exercise aims to showcase a united front in the country as Malawians prepares and anticipates for the upcoming 2025 Historic Tripartite Elections and Political Campaigns.

First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera was applauded for her commitment to improving access to education during the handover ceremony held on Monday.

At the launching ceremony, traditional leader, Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe and Rumphi West Member of Parliament Yona Adadawiza Mkandawire expressed their deep appreciation for the school, highlighting its importance as a unique educational institution in the area. "We are very grateful for this excellent project. The government has been a steadfast supporter of our educational needs. Please convey our heartfelt thanks from the constituents of this area," said Mkandawire.

The Malawi Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima emphasized the school potential to transform the educational landscape in Rumphi. The Malawi Ministry of Education Strengthens National School Management through the Batch 17 Leadership Training Program

The Ministry of Education has launched Batch 17 of the School Leadership Training Programme (SLP) at the Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre, gathering 187 leaders from schools across the country to enhance their leadership skills and improve educational outcomes. The event, held today, aims to reinforce the objectives of the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP).

Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, highlighted the significance of the SLP in improving the learning environment for lower primary school students in all government institutions. "The main objective of MERP is to improve the learning environment for students in lower primary schools across all government schools," Dr. Chimbwete Phiri stated during the opening ceremony of the program

The training initiative aspires to reach a total of 10,200 school leaderships from all 34 education districts in Malawi. The program includes training 7,800 headteachers and deputy headteachers, alongside 2,000 female section heads and 400 primary education advisors and inspectors.

The program has been very productive, since its inception in November 2022, the SLP has successfully trained 10,165 school leaders across 16 batches. Among these, 7,613 were headteachers and deputy headteachers, leaving a target of 187 to be addressed in this latest batch. Notably, the programme has surpassed its goal for female section heads, training 2,279 participants compared to the initial target of 2,000.

In a bid to promote gender equity in leadership positions, Batch 17 includes a significant number of female headteachers and deputy headteachers from various districts including Chitipa, Karonga, Mzimba South and North, Nkhata Bay, Blantyre Urban and Rural, Chikwawa, Mwanza, and Nsanje.

The training sessions are being held at multiple locations. Malawi Sunbird Hotel, AAUCHA Lodge in Mzuzu, and St Kizito Conference Centre in Chitipa have hosted the trainings which fosters inclusive and accessible training opportunities for all participants.

Dr. Chimbwete outlined key objectives for the SLP, which are aimed at promoting positive and inclusive school cultures conducive to the needs of vulnerable children, as well as improving teachers' morale to improve the educational system and impact more children nationwide
