Here is our wonderful termcard for Hilary 2023 📜 We hope to see you at one of our events soon!
WEEK1) FILM NIGHT: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM
Friday 20 Jan, 7:15 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
Come watch the 2009 fan film The Hunt for Gollum. Based on Tolkien's appendices, the film follows Aragorn's search for Gollum, who Gandalf fears may reveal information about the One Ring to Sauron. After the screening we will discuss the film.
WEEK 2) TENGWAR WORKSHOP
Friday 27 Jan, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
Tolkien created several languages, and for his Elvish languages he needed an alphabet. And that's how we got Tengwar. Join us as Joanne holds a workshop on using Tengwar. No prior knowledge required.
WEEK 3) MINOR WORKS: LEAF BY NI**LE
Friday 3 Feb, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
The Professor wrote several lesser-known works, his Minor Works. This term we will look at Leaf by Ni**le. A short story that may be read as a musing on Tolkien's creative process (though the Professor might object to such an allegorical view). Our reading and discussion will be led by Rebecca.
WEEK 4) POETRY MEETING
Friday 10 Feb, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
We will be taking a deep dive into Tolkien's poetry. Andrew will give us a presentation, followed by a reading of selected pieces.
WEEK 5) PUB TRIP
Friday 17 Feb, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
As is well known, the Professor enjoyed relaxing at the pub. Come join us for a pub trip in the spirit of Tolkien.
WEEK 6) EAGLE DEBATE (FRI) & VARSITY QUIZ (TBC)
Friday 24 Feb, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
Join us for our famous Eagle Debate; a light roleplaying game where you justify your character's continued survival on the Eagle Express as you lose both height and passengers. Only the most persuasive will survive!
The Varsity Quiz, where we face off against Cambridge, is taking place this weekend (either Saturday or Sunday). This is a battle of trivia, wits, and memory. More details will follow soon.
WEEK 7) GUEST SPEAKER & FEAST
Friday 3 Mar, 7 PM & Saturday 4 Mar (TBD)
Join a special presentation by a guest speaker, followed by a discussion. More information to be revealed.
This term we will also hold a banquet, which will have its own theme. More information about the banquet and how to sign up will follow via email.
WEEK 8: COMMITTEE MEETING & ELECTIONS
Friday 10 Mar, 7 PM, meet outside the Christ Church Tom Tower gate
